Chamber Briefs...The Palmyra Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting Tuesday, December 12, at HATS.

ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET The Chamber’s Annual Awards Banquet will be held Thursday, January 11. Tickets are available at the Chamber office, City Hall, HATS and the Spectator office. For the first time, Chamber businesses have the opportunity to sponsor tables at the Annual Banquet by decorating a table to reflect their business and display their product to banquet attendees. A business does not need to buy tickets for seating at that table. To reserve a table to decorate, call or email the Palmyra Chamber office (573-769-0777; [email protected]). Ten tables of eight are available for sponsorship. Small businesses may choose to sponsor a 1/2 table.

CHRISTMAS IN PALMYRA Teresa Smyser thanked all who helped make Christmas in Palmyra so successful. The auction raised $2360. In addition, several businesses made monetary donations. The Food Pantry items brought to the event have been delivered. (See page 8.)

GUEST SPEAKER, LOREN GRAHAM Mayor Loren Graham was our guest speaker. Before having him recap the city’s 2017 accomplishments, President Jones-Liendo congratulated Graham on his long service as Branch Manager at HNB Bank and on his upcoming retirement.

Mayor Graham shared a long list of city accomplishments for 2017. The Panther logo was painted on the water tower. Two phases of upgrading the city’s electrical grid have been completed; the final phase with be completed in Spring 2018. The upgrade will save the city about $40,000 a year in electrical costs but will take a while to pay for itself.

Upgrades to the filtration system at the water plant have begun, and a newly installed dewatering screw press at the wastewater treatment plant is providing efficient desludging. The city has also been working to cut down on storm water runoff in the sewers by fixing leaks to reduce inflow and attempting to eliminate sump pump flow from entering the sewer system. Utility meter reading is now completely automated.

Improvements to sidewalk and curbing have begun, and Dickerson Street has been extended to improve residential accessibility. Some work has been done to prevent erosion on a section of the Main Street culvert, though this road is part of Business 61 and the city wants it to remain under MoDot jurisdiction.

The yard waste program, wherein the city will take away raked leaves, etc., left on the street in front of city homes, will continue. The police station parking lot has been extended.

The storm water study has been completed. Addressing the problem will take 5-10 years to complete and about $220,000 a year to fund projects like citywide storm water improvements and infrastructure work. Palmyra City Council members officially approved two sales tax ballot proposals that will appear on the April 2018 ballot. The capital improvement proposal would replace the existing 1/4-cent capital improvement sales tax with a new 1/2-cent sales tax, while the transportation sales tax proposal would enact a 1/4-cent sales tax for transportation projects. “In essence, the 1/2-cent sales tax increase would essentially replace the recently repealed 1/2-cent Highway 36 TDD tax, making it a ‘no tax increase’ proposal,” shared Graham.

The next monthly Chamber Meeting will be the Annual Banquet on Thursday, January 11. Social begins at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 at Farischon Hall.

ANNUAL CHAMBER AWARDS

SHOWCASE YOUR BUSINESS AT THE ANNUAL PALMYRA CHAMBER AWARDS BANQUET

Do you have your tickets for the Palmyra Chamber’s Annual Awards Banquet Meeting, Thursday, January 11th at Farischon Hall? Tickets are available at the Chamber Office, City Hall, HATS, and the Palmyra Spectator. The Annual Awards will be presented for Citizen, Educator and Volunteer of 2017. The award for Business Hall of Fame and the Paintbrush Award, for a business improving its appearance, will be revealed; the Chamber President also gets to present her choice for a special President’s Award.

CHAMBER HAPPENINGSCHAMBER HAPPENINGS

There are only a few days left to join those showcasing their businesses at the 2018 Annual Chamber Awards Banquet by decorating a table. You can promote your business by using branded items such as pens or notepads at place settings with the centerpiece/prize being an item/service sold by the business. Or choose a theme, such as movies or wine, decorating accordingly. Your business doesn’t need to buy tickets for seating at that table. The whole idea is to see banquet attendees flock to your table because they like what they see!

To reserve a table to decorate, call or email the Palmyra Chamber office (573-769-0777; [email protected].) Only a few tables of eight are still available for sponsorship. If you are a small business, why not sponsor ½ a table, going in with another Chamber member? Then• Provide an item for the center of the table that will be a door prize for someone seated at that table. • Provide a small item at each place setting as a favor for each person at the table. *Any items placed on the table will be considered prizes.

The Palmyra Chamber will have Msgr. Farischon Hall open between 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. on January 11 to give you time to decorate your table. If you prefer, you may bring your decorations to the Chamber office prior to this date and this can be done for you. The Chamber will be responsible for the tablecloths, napkins and table service for all tables. We will also provide a small sign with the name of your company which will be placed on your decorated table.

Use your creativity! The door prizes and table favors will add another reason for our attendees

to come to the 2018 banquet!
