Featured Artists, Mid-South Horn Workshop 2017 KATEŘINA JAVŮRKOVÁ Kateřina Javůrková began playing horn at the age of nine with Tomáš Krejbich. She graduated from the Prague Conservatoire in the class of Prof. Bedřich Tylšar. From 2011 she was also a student at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague with professors Radek Baborák and Zdeněk Divoký. During her studies she has passed an intership at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse Paris in the class of Prof. André Cazalet. She is a winner of a number of international competitions, among them the “Federico II di Svevia” competition in Italy (2011), International Horn Competition of the festival Moravian, Autumn (2011), and the International Brass Competition in Brno (2013). Her latest and most significant success is the 1st prize and title of laureate in the prestigious Prague Spring International Competition 2013. From January 2014, Kateřina joined the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. She is also a member of the PKF - Prague Philharmonia. She was invited to play with the Orchestre de Paris. As soloist she has appeared with the PKF - Prague Philharmonia, Prague Symphony Chamber Orchestra, Carlsbad Symphony Orchestra, and the NOSPR Katowice and her latest recording of the Krysztof Penderecki “Winterreise” Concerto was completed last year. She is also an active chamber musician, performing with the Belfiato Quintet. This ensemble was awarded a 3rd prize on the 6th International Wind Quintet Competition in Marseille, France (2011).

MARTINHACKLEMAN

MartinHacklemanrecentlyjoinedthefacultyoftheUniversityofMissouri-KansasCityConservatoryofMusicandDanceasArtistinResidenceandAssociateTeachingProfessorofHorn.

Mr.Hacklemanbeganplayingthehornattheageofsixteen,studyingwithCaesarLaMonacainHouston.OtherteachershaveincludedBarryTuckwellandRolandBerger(ViennaPhilharmonic).HestudiedattheUniversityofHoustonandatage19hewonthePrincipalHornChairintheCalgaryPhilharmonicwhereheplayedfortwoseasons.HethenjoinedtheVancouverSymphonyasSoloHornunderMaestroKazuyoshiAkiyamain1974whereheplayedforthenextnineyears.

In1983,Mr.HacklemanleftVancouvertojointheworld-renownedCanadianBrass.Histhreeyearswiththegroupsawmanyoutstandingachievements,amongthem:sevenrecordingsforCBSMasterworks,includingBrassinBerlin(withthebrasssectionoftheBerlinPhilharmonic);extensivetoursoftheU.S.,Canada,EuropeandtheFarEast;aCanadianJUNOawardfor"bestclassicalrecord";thegroup'sHollywoodBowlpremiere;andthereleaseoftheirfirstvideo.

Mr.HacklemanthenacceptedaninvitationtojointheEmpireBrassQuintet,whosemoderateconcertscheduleallowedhimtimetopursueasolocareeraswellasspecialtyinterestssuchastheViennaandNaturalHorns.HewasamemberoftheEBQforfouryearsandrecorded5CD’swiththem.

Nostrangertothefieldofmusiceducation,Martinhaspublishedétudebooks(nowintheirthirdprinting)forthehornthatarerequiredrepertoireatsuchinstitutionsastheRoyalConservatoryinLondon,EnglandandtheUniversityofMichigan.HeisafrequentjurorfortheCanadaCouncil.HehasbeenonthefacultyattheUniversityofMaryland,BostonUniversity,andtheUniversityofBritishColumbia.HeisonthefacultyatBanffCentreinAlbertaeverysummerintheBrassProgramaswellasafrequentguestintheChamberMusicSessions.ForfouryearshecoachedtheAsianYouthOrchestraandparticipatedintheirannualworldtours.Mr.HacklemanisamemberofSummitBrasswhereheplays,records,andteacheseverysummer.OvertheyearshehasbeeninvitedtogivemasterclassesatJulliard,theManhattanSchool,CurtisInstitute,andUCLA,amongothers.FormanyyearshewasaFrenchhorndesignconsultantwithYamaha.

MartinreturnedtoVancouverinNovemberof1989,whereheplayedPrincipalHornintheVancouverSymphonyOrchestraonceagainservedasAdjunctProfessorofHornattheUniversityofBritishColumbia.In1990,Hehelpedlaunchanationallybroadcastchambermusic

seriesonCBCRadiocalled"CURIO",featuringchambermusicofrarecombinationsandforgottencomposers.

Forthe1999-2000seasonMr.HacklemanwasinvitedtoplayPrincipalHornintheMontréalSymphonyunderCharlesDutoit.In2000,hewasappointedPrincipalHornoftheNationalSymphonyattheKennedyCenterinWashington,D.CwhereheremaineduntilhismovetoKansasCity.HewasaskedtoperformasaguestPrincipalHornwith

thePhiladelphiaOrchestraontwooccasionswhilelivinginWashington,D.C.Aswell,MartinhasplayedPrincipalHornintheChautauquaOrchestraatTheChautauquaInstituteandattheWaterlooFestivalinPrinceton,NewYork.

MartinplaysSoloHornintheWashingtonSymphonicBrassandhasrecordedfourCDswiththem.HealsoteachesatTheBanffCentreinBanff,Alberta,CanadawiththeAllStarBrass,ateamofrenownedbrasssoloistsledbyinternationaltrumpetsoloistJensLindemann.TheywillbereleasingtheirfourthCDinthespringof2013.

Mr.HacklemanhasmadenumerousrecordingswiththeNationalSymphony,VancouverSymphony,MontrealSymphony,CanadianBrass,TidewaterBrass,andtheEmpireBrass.In1997herecordedhisfirstsoloCD,AfteraDream,madeupentirelyofhisownarrangementsforsolohornwithpianoandstringaccompaniment.HethenrecordedRomanzawiththeCBCVancouverOrchestrawhichfeatured5lostRomanticconcertos.Inaddition,arecordingofchambermusicfor2hornsandbassoonwasreleasedinthespringof1996.InNovemberof1998aChristmasrecordingwithhornquartetwasreleased.AdiscoftheBrahmsHornTriowithotherchambermusicwasreleasedinJulyof2000.HismostrecentCDisaduocollaborationwithhiswife,Kelly,entitled,SolitaryHotel,whichincludestheworksofMassenet,Rheinberger,Hlobil,Barber,andWilder.TheHacklemanDuohasplannedtwomoreCDsforlaterthisyear.

ROGERKAZARogerKazarejoinedtheSt.LouisSymphonyasPrincipalHorninthefallof2009,after14yearswiththeHoustonSymphony.HewaspreviouslyamemberoftheSTLSymphonyhornsectionfrom1983-95,andpriortothatheldpositionsintheVancouverSymphony,BostonSymphony,andtheBostonPops,wherehewassolohornnderJohnWilliams.AnativeofPortland,Oregon,heattendedPortlandStateUniversity,studyingwithChristopherLeuba,andlatertransferredtotheNewEnglandConservatoryinBoston,wherehereceivedaBachelorofMusicwithHonorsin1977underthetutelageofThomasE.Newell,Jr.

Kaza’smusicalactivitiesarewide-ranging.Thesonoftwomusicians,growingupinamusicalfamily,hereceivedhisearlytrainingonpiano,givingtwosolorecitalsonthatinstrumentbeforeconcentratingonhorn.HehasstudiedcompositionwiththeCzech-AmericancomposerTomasSvoboda,andconducting

withLeonardSlatkin,GuntherSchuller,andMurrySidlin.Heconductedover40concertswithmembersoftheHoustonSymphonyundertheauspicesofitsCommunityConnectionsoutreachprogram,givingconcertsinschools,churches,homelessshelters,andretirementhomes.

Asaneducator,KazahasservedonthefacultiesoftheUniversityofHouston,RiceUniversity,St.LouisConservatory,UniversityofMissouri-St.Louis,SouthernIllinoisUniversity-Edwardsville,andhasgivenmasterclassesattheEastmanSchool,JuilliardSchool,IndianaUniversity,UniversityofMichigan,andmanyothers.Studentsfromhisyearsofteachingfillorchestralpositionsworldwide,includingprincipalplayersinmajorU.S.symphonies,andchambergroupssuchastheCanadianBrass.Inaddition,hehasbeenengagedasguestartistandperformerfortheInternationalHornSocietyatinternationalandregionalconferences.Heisthewriter/producer/performeroftheinstructionalCD,Audition:Improbable,andacontributortothesyndicatedNPRradioshowandpodcast,EnginesofOurIngenuity.

Kazahasappearedassoloistwithmanyorchestras,includingtheSt.Louis,Vancouver,andHoustonsymphonies,andtheCarlosChavezChamberOrchestrainMexicoCity.Afrequentchambermusicianaswell,hehasperformedatnumeroussummervenues,includingtheBravo!VailValleyFestival,ChamberMusicNorthwest,MainlyMozart,andtheAspenandMarrowstonefestivals.HepresentlyservesasinstructorofhornattheChautauquaInstitution’sMusicSchool,whereheisalsoPrincipalHornoftheChautauquaSymphony.

Anavidbicyclist,hiker,andwhitewaterrafter,Kazaisespeciallyfondofthehorninits“original”setting:out-of-doors.AperformanceofOlivierMessiaen’s“InterstellarCall,”fromhissuiteFromtheCanyonstotheStars,recordedatthebottomoftheGrandCanyon,waspersonallycritiquedbythecomposershortlybeforehisdeathin1992.

THOMASJÖSTLEIN

ThomasJöstlein,AssociatePrincipalHornwiththeSt.LouisSymphonysince2010,enjoysanactiveandvariedmusicallife.From2007-09,JöstleinwastheNewYorkPhilharmonic'sAssistantPrincipalHorn,playingallpositions,includingAssociatePrincipalandThirdHorn.UnderMusicDirectorLorinMaazel,hewasonthreemajortours,includingthehistoriclivebroadcastfromNorthKorea(2008).Previously,heheldpositionswiththeHonolulu,Omaha,Richmond,andKansasCitysymphonyorchestras,andperformedinsummerfestivalsinOregon,Ohio,Colorado,andNorthCarolina.HehasservedasAssistantProfessorofHornattheUniversityofIllinois,playingintheChampaign-UrbanaSymphonyOrchestraandIanHobson'sSinfoniadaCamerawhileteachinghornandorchestralrepertoire.HetaughtseveralweeksatIndianaUniversityin2014inbothnaturalandun-natural(i.e.valved)horn,andhasheldadjunctpositionsattheUniversityof

HawaiiandatVirginiaCommonwealthUniversity.

Anactivesoloist,JöstleinwonFirstPrizeintheprofessionaldivisionoftheAmericanHornCompetitionin2003,andtheGrandPrizeattheHugoKauderMusicCompetitionatYaleUniversityin2005,earningarecitalatMerkinConcertHallinNewYorkCity.In2014,heappearedwithhishornistcolleaguesintheSt.LouisSymphonyasasoloistonSchumann'sConcertstückforFourHornsandOrchestra,op.86.

Asacomposer,hehashadseveralworkspublished,includinghisoriginalsettingofClementMoore’s’TwastheNightbeforeChristmasforHornTrioandnarrator(CimarronPress).Heappearsonseveralrecordings,notablyTonyBennett’sDuetsIIalbum,alongwithPhilMyers,PrincipalHorn,NewYorkPhilharmonic,andJöstlein’ssister,BarbaraCurrie,FourthHornwiththeMetropolitanOperaOrchestra.

ChristopherDwyerwasappointedtotheSecondHornpositionintheSt.LouisSymphonybyDavidRobertsonduringthespringof2014.ChrisalsoservesasSecondHornfortheColoradoMusicFestivalOrchestrainBoulderduringthesummermonths.PriortomovingtoSt.LouisheservedasSecondHornfortheJacksonvilleSymphonyOrchestraandtheNewMexicoSymphonyOrchestraaswellasthePrincipalHornfortheSarasotaOperaOrchestra.ChrishasfrequentlyperformedasaguestwithmanyotherorchestrasincludingthePhiladelphia,Chicago,Cleveland,LosAngeles,Cincinnati,Baltimore,Malaysian,andKansasCitysymphonyorchestras.Additionally,hehasparticipatedinDeutscheGrammophonstudiorecordingprojectswithboththeChicagoSymphonyOrchestraunderPierreBoulezandwiththePhiladelphiaOrchestraunderYannickNezet-Seguin.ChrisreceivedhisBachelorofMusicdegreefrom

theClevelandInstituteofMusicwherehewasastudentofEliEpstein.HealsostudiedwiththeeminentDaleClevengerwhileservingasamemberoftheCivicOrchestraofChicago.ChrishasparticipatedinmanymusicfestivalsincludingtheSantaFeChamberMusicFestival,theSantaFeOpera,MusicfromAngelFire,theNorfolkChamberMusicFestivalatYaleUniversity,andtheNationalRepertoryOrchestra.Heisanavidbaseballfan,hiker,andcraftbeerenthusiast.ChrisismarriedtoFlutistLauraDwyer.

TODBOWERMASTER

TodBowermaster,anativeofOttawa,Illinois,isThirdHornoftheSt.LouisSymphony,apositionhehasheldsince1995.HeservedasActingAssistantPrincipalinthe2008-09seasonandActingPrincipalforthe2002-2003season.Bowermasterhasappearedasasoloistwiththeorchestraonnumerousoccasions.HehasalsoperformedasasoloistwiththeHonoluluSymphonyandtheSunValleySummerSymphony,amongothers.BeforehisappointmenttotheSTLSymphony,hewasamemberoftheHonoluluSymphonyandtheLyricOperaofChicagoOrchestra.HehasalsoperformedwiththeorchestrasofChicago,Houston,andSanFrancisco.InOctoberof2012,hewashonoredtobeamemberoftheWorldOrchestraforPeace,performingatNewYork'sCarnegieHallandChicago'sSymphonyCenterunderthedirectionofMaestroValeryGergiev.Winnerofthe1999AmericanHorn

Competitionandthe1982ColemanChamberEnsembleCompetition,hecontinuestoenjoyperforminginbothsoloandchambermusicsettings.

Bowermasterhasbeenaregularparticipantinnumerouschambermusicfestivalsnationwide,includingtheKapaluaMusicFestivalonMaui;theBayChamberConcertsinRockport,Maine;SummerfestinKansasCity;theInnsbruckFestivaloutsideofSt.Louis;StringsintheMountainsinSteamboatSprings,Colorado;andtheLandmarksSocietyChamberConcertsontheislandofSt.Croix.

Bowermasterisingreatdemandasateacher,havingbeeninvitedtogiverecitalsandmasterclassesatRiceUniversity,IllinoisStateUniversity,NorthernIllinoisUniversity,theManhattanSchoolofMusic,andtheUniversityofMissouri.RecentteachingengagementshaveincludedbeingaguestprofessorwiththehornclassatNorthwesternUniversityandwiththehornstudentsattheIndianaUniversitySummerMusicFestival.AdditionallyheservesaslecturerofhornattheUniversityofMissouri-St.Louis.Whennotplayingthehorn,heenjoysplayingtennis,singing,and,mostofall,familytime.HeresidesinKirkwood,Missouri,withhiswife,Cynthia,aviolinist,andtheirchildren,KathrynandRyan.

JULIETHAYER

JulieThayerwasappointedtotheSt.LouisSymphonyinMay2014.AnativeofAtlanta,shehaspreviouslyheldpositionswiththeHoustonSymphonyandHarrisburgSymphony,andhasbeenaregularguestwithmanyothers,includingthePhiladelphiaOrchestra,RochesterPhilharmonic,SanDiegoSymphony,HoustonGrandOpera,andAtlantaSymphony.MostrecentlyshewasactingFourthhornwiththeLosAngelesPhilharmonicunderGustavoDudamel,withwhomshecollaboratedonmultiplerecordingsandtours.JuliegraduatedfromtheEastmanSchoolofMusic,studyingunderPeterKurau,andlaterworkedwithWilliamVerMeulenatRiceUniversity'sShepherdSchoolofMusic.ShewasaninauguralrecitalistattheKennedyCenter'sConservatorySeries,andwasawinnerintheInternationalHornSociety's2004orchestralcompetition.Shehasalsobeenafrequentguestartistorparticipantatmanyleadingsummerfestivals,

includingMainlyMozart,LaJollaSummerFest,BreckenridgeMusicFestival,theNationalOrchestraInstitute,andtheMusicAcademyoftheWest.Julieplaysacustom-madehornbyDanRauch.
