Hopping Into Spring

I would like to personally thank the Diamond Bar residents, community partners and special guests who attended this

year’s State of the City Address. As your Mayor, it was a privilege to share the City’s recent accomplishments - we have come a long way in a short period of time and Diamond Bar has much to be proud of. While there is immense value in reflec-tion, this presentation provided an avenue to share plans for future opportunities and City governance. I am truly looking forward to what is in store for the City of Diamond Bar! For those community members who were unable to attend, the State of the City Address was recorded and will be available for viewing on the City website. Springtime in Diamond Bar is full of special events. We cel-ebrated the City’s 28 years of incorporation. The annual City birthday party took place at Pantera Park and in attendance were community organizations, school districts, public safety officials, local dignitaries, City staff and Council Members, local businesses and non-profit service agencies. Residents enjoyed entertainment, carnival rides, games, food booths, a car show and a business showcase.

The City will also be hosting an annual Earth Day Celebra-tion on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 9am-2pm. Located in the AQMD Parking lot—21865 Copley Drive, this event features several family-friendly activities, displays and dem-onstrations aimed at raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainable living. Residents can take advantage of free document/paper shredding services, safely dispose of e-waste, and participate in the free mulch giveaway and smart gardening workshops. For additional information, contact the

Environmental Services Division at 909.839.7015 or visit www.diamondbarca.gov/earthday. As always, the City Council welcomes your comments, con-cerns, or questions. You can reach me or any other council member by calling 909.839.7010 or by using the links to our email addresses located on the “Council Members” page of the City website at www.diamondbarca.gov.

Life here in the City is in full bloom and I am personally

excited that Spring has arrived. Not only is it my favorite season, but the fact that people are outdoors enjoying the beauty of our picturesque City brings an abun-dance of joy.

This Spring be sure to “stop and smell the roses.” Life passes way too quickly and moments are missed. Recently at my son’s baseball game, I took my eyes off the field and looked at the parents. About 80% of them were on their phones. I am guilty of this at times as well. But this struck me hard because I may have missed a great catch, a hard swing, the smile on my son’s face when he landed a great play. I may

have missed a moment. We should not let technol-

ogy take these moments away. That email can wait, that person calling can go to voicemail or that Instagram or Facebook picture can be posted later. Stop to smell the roses, you will be glad you did.

Speaking of moments. We here at The Windmill are looking for moments of yours in Diamond Bar. Send us a snapshot of happenings around town to be featured in The Windmill. JPG images can be sent to [email protected]. If sending from a phone, be sure to send

it as a large file. Looking forward to sharing your memories.

As always, the Diamond Bar Community Foundation and I thank you for all your support in reading this news magazine. Please be sure to shop local and support our advertisers.

Thank you for reading.

Deputy Wright was well known in the City’s public school system where he oversaw the STAR program, teaching 4th–6th grade students about drug awareness as well as many life lessons that influenced hundreds of students over the years. After 35 years working as a Los Angeles County Deputy, Rick retired in 2008.

Sprouts Announces New Store Locations For Second Half of 2017

12Community News

Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. is one of the fastest-growing retailers

in the country, slated to open 11 new locations in the second half of 2017, featuring one of them right here in Diamond Bar. Sprouts will open a total of 32 stores across the country this year and will bring more than 100 career opportunities per store to its local neighborhoods.

The Diamond Bar Sprouts will be located at 239 South Diamond Bar Boulevard in the old Kmart shopping center. Sprouts Farmers Market, Inc. is a healthy grocery store offering fresh, natural and organic foods at great prices. Sprouts offers a complete shopping experience that in-cludes fresh produce, meat and seafood,

bulk foods, vitamins and supplements, packaged groceries, deli, baked goods, dairy products, frozen foods, natural body care and household items catering to consumers’ growing interest in health and wellness.

Sprouts is dedicated to growing responsibly and has committed to a “Zero Waste” threshold by 2020, as defined by the United States Environmental Protec-tion Agency. The Sprouts Food Rescue program donates unsold and edible, but

not marketable, groceries to local food banks. Relief agencies pick up this food, which would otherwise go to waste, and distribute it to families in need. In 2016, Sprouts stores and distribu-tion centers donated approximately 18 million pounds of food, equivalent to

15 million meals, reducing hunger and the company’s environmental footprint. Food that is not fit for human donation is either composted or sent to cattle through Sprouts’ Food Waste to Farms program.

Also planned in the Kmart shopping center along with Sprouts is Ross, Chipotle and Coffee Bean. All are expected to open in December of this year.

New Trauma Center Opens in Neighboring Pomona

14Community News

Pomona Valley Hos-pital Medical Center

(PVHMC) is Los Angeles County’s newest trauma cen-ter bringing a higher level of care to the entire Eastern L.A. County region.

Critical patients near Pomona and in the Eastern San Ga-briel Valley will no longer have to travel a long distance to receive life-saving treat-ments. There are currently more than 1,200 trauma pa-tients in Eastern L.A. County each year that are rushed by helicopter or ambulance more than 25 miles away to L.A. County–USC Medical Center,

Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, or the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. Every minute is crucial to trauma injuries.

The opening of the Trauma Center created approximately 140 new health care jobs to the region and PVHMC estimates that they will care for 1,000-2,000 trauma patients annually. The Hospital recruited a highly trained team of eight trauma surgeons, who provide round-the-clock surgical staffing for the Trauma Center and are double board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. The trauma surgeons are supported by elite orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and 24-hour in-house anesthesia coverage.

In preparation for the Trauma Center, the Hospital underwent major capital improvements including:

An expanded Emergency Depart• ment to add 23 additional beds and a two-bed trauma bay;A Trauma Intensive Care Unit with twelve beds; and•A conveniently located new parking structure equipped •with a helipad for aerial transports

Along with its capital improvements, the Hospital has invested in new technology to expedite care and communication among the trauma team.

WISHING YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON !

State of the City16CommunityNews

Mayor Jimmy Lin gave an exceptional and informative State of the City address last month at the Diamond Bar

Center. Topics included Public Safety, traffic, project updates, new restaurants and parks, Diamond Bar’s first strategic plan and a new General Plan.

Public SafetyDiamond Bar is one of the safest cities in California and safety is a priority for the City. 20% of Diamond Bar’s annual budget is allocated towards public safety. A new program, “Let’s Talk Public Safety,” launched last fall giving residents the opportunity to meet with Public Safety officials and connect on matters that will deter crime and increase traffic safety.

TrafficTraffic is a major concern for residents, but it is in fact wonder-ful for local businesses and restaurants. Diamond Bar cannot decrease the number of travelers passing through, but they are focusing on technical and engineering tactics such as battery backup systems for traffic lights, power failures and signal synchronization. These techniques contribute to a better flow of traffic.

Project UpdatesTraffic will be heavy on parts of Grand Avenue, Golden Springs and Brea Canyon Road for the next year or so due

to the construction of the Lemon Avenue interchange and the 60/57 freeway Confluence project. The Lemon Avenue interchange project will be completed in the summer of 2018. It will eliminate on and off ramps at Brea Canyon Road and will provide a direct route for delivery trucks. The 57/60 freeway Confluence project covers a two mile stretch around Grand Avenue and will consist of four phases. Phase one is the construction of the westbound freeway on ramp at Grand Avenue. Phase two is the construction of the westbound freeway off ramp and auxiliary lane to Grand Avenue. Phase three is the widening of Grand Avenue and Golden Springs Road. Phase four which involves the freeway mainline improvements and bypass connectors, is still looking for funding and City Council members are advocating in Washington DC to move this project to the finish line.

Beautification ProjectIn continuing to beautify our community, City monuments will be placed at Golden Springs Road near Copley as well as Diamond Bar Boulevard and Temple. Diamond Bar Boulevard between the 60 freeway and Golden Springs Road will also receive a street scape theme like the one at Grand Avenue and Diamond Bar Boulevard.

Strategic and General Plan Diamond Bar is in the process of creating the City’s first strategic plan to map out needs and priorities of the commu-nity with three purposes in mind: responsible stewardship of public resources, maintaining an open, engaged and responsible government and creating a safe sustainable and healthy com-munity. The City is also currently creating a new general plan for Diamond Bar’s future. This plan is like a constitution for the City to establish goals, policies and objectives in moving forward for the next 20 years. Every general plan has to have seven elements which include land use, housing, conservation, circulation, open space, noise and public safety. The General Plan committee is talking to the community and conducting surveys of what direction the people want it to go. For further information, visit www.DiamondBarGP.com.

Pomona Unified School District (PUSD) will participate in the 1

million project; A multi-year initiative that will change the lives of 1 million high school students who lack a reliable source of internet access at home.

Sprint and the Sprint Foundation have partnered with schools and non-profits to offer free wireless service to low income

high school students across the U.S. Each student will receive a free smartphone, tablet, laptop or hotspot device as well as 3GB per month of high-speed LTE data.

This project will help eliminate the home-work gap for 1 million teens. It will also help to create opportunities for high school students to participate in the

digital world and transform their lives by creating a pathway to a suc-cessful future.

The program pi-loted this past

January in seven markets and will prepare for a nationwide rollout at the start of the 2017-18 school year. Sprint plans to bring on approximately 200,000 eligible high school students into the program each year for five years, offering them devices and connectivity for up to four years while in high school.

PUSD was selected because of its diverse student population and because of the need for this type of service. 350 PUSD students received devices and more will receive them at the start of the 2017/2018 school year.

Diamond Bar Resident is Rising to R&B Star

Former Diamond Bar High School graduate and Diamond Bar resi-

dent, Nieman Gatus, is on his way to fulfilling his dream as an R&B artist. Nieman is a singer, songwriter, filmmaker and performer who has a rising number of followers and over one million plays for his single, “Planes,” in which he collaborated with his cousin, Moira Dela Torre. Nieman’s genre in music is R&B with throwback sounds for the modern age. His first Extended Play (EP) debuted in December of 2014 with five tracks that take you back to 90’s R&B fused with poetic lyrics that are reminisce of his culture, obses-sion with hipster bikes and trying to find his way. Niemen recently released another EP of his newest song, “Outer Space,” in which he has already received over 1,700 plays. In high school, Gatus always had a passion for music and the Arts. He was heavily involved in drama and musicals and his songwriting and artistry stemmed from DBHS. Gatus com-mends Mr. Tietz and Mr. Acciani for their incredible support before his music took off. After high school, Nieman took his career path towards medi-cine attending Saddleback and then IVC taking Biology and Chemistry classes. However, his love for music put medicine in the back seat and instead took the driver’s seat towards his love. Nieman performs throughout Southern California and has also taken his shows overseas to the Philippines. His music videos demonstrate an art form of their own which connects with his film background; he is currently finishing his senior year at Chapman as a film student and is a videographer for the Disney Examiner. Nieman continues to successfully build his music career. To support Nieman and listen to his records go to www. Sound-cloud.com/NIEMANmusic.com.

WHAT LARRY’S CLIENT SAYI went through two brokers with half your skills before I got smart and hired you. People with dis-abilities and medical issues have needs that most people don’t. You understood what was needed and worked with me in showing the property. Within 2 weeks we had an offer and closed escrow soon thereafter. One thing that really stood out was the way you kept me informed each step of the process. I highly recommend that people hire you first and get the job done right! Many thanks, - Mike Peterson
