Dear Residents,

How time flies as the first half of the year runs pass us.

What a turnaround it has been the last 12 months. A year ago, it was quite gloomy as the world was going through a severe economic crisis. While a number of countries are still not out of the woods, Singapore has staged a strong recovery and we are now looking at our economy growing by 7-9% this year.

In our constituency, I am pleased that more precincts have been selected for Lift Upgrading and Neighbourhood Renewal Programme projects. The strong mandates from residents show that they fully appreciate the benefits that come with such projects. Many of you have also shared with me the great transportation facilities [MRT, Circle Line and Bus Interchange] in the estate. Many are also looking forward to the completion of the mega shopping mall, expected by the end of the year. Like many of you, I am also looking forward to the latest library

branch that our National Library Board will set up in the mall. This is something many residents had asked for, and I am glad I was able to play a small role in making this wish come true.

With all these developments, little wonder that many residents also tell me that they have been receiving many calls from property agents. Our estate is no doubt considered ‘hot’ and a choice location.

Of late, I have also been thinking about what holds our country, our community together. To me, it must be the strong personal ties between people. In particular, the family must be the bulwark of society, and when the family fails, the community helps, and when the community fails, the state comes in. As a matter of principle, I prefer a light touch from the state. This is why, even as I am lobbying the government for a change in the laws that govern the maintenance of parents, I am keen on allowing a larger and first role for the family and the community.

Message from Mr Seah Kian Peng

Penduduk yang dihormati,

Begitu cepat sekali separuh tahun pertama meninggalkan kita.

memainkan peranan memperkasa jalinan kemasyarakatan.

ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY

5

It has been almost 20 years since I was involved in the grassroots organisation. I must say that I have enjoyed every moment being part of this committee. It all started when I relocated to Serangoon Central with my family in 1988. Serangoon Central was a new estate and I was keen to know the neighbours around me. I came upon a flyer requesting for volunteers for the RC Committee. I saw this as an opportunity to work on my passion in serving this community.

Over the years, the number of members grew as well as the number of events. Residents’ participation is important to our events. Hence, on a regular monthly basis, we conducted house visits around the neighbouring blocks. This approach has allowed us to keep in touch with the residents as well as updating them with our activities. Through them, we are able to gather feedbacks and suggestions to give us better ideas on how to meet their needs.

As our committee members’ average age is above fifty, we urge the younger residents to come forward to join us in serving the community.

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of my members to thank the residents for their continued support and participation.

Albert FongChairman, RC Zone C

I started my community services in the Braddell Heights Zone A Residents’ Committee (RC) since 1990.

About 20 years ago i.e. 1990, I was approached by an elderly Malay resident from a low-income family who tried to seek financial help at a grassroots event. I brought her to see Mr. Goh Choon Kang, who was the Member of Parliament then, and helped to explain her problems. With Mr. Goh’s encouragement and my own interests in helping the needy people, I then joined the Zone A RC. Since then, I have been actively involved in grassroots activities at both the RC and Constituency levels.

In 2003, when the Community Club was looking for a Malay leader to lead the newly formed MAEC, then Community Club Management Committee (CCMC) Chairman, Mr. Gan Teng Geow, BBM, approached and encouraged me to take up the post. MAEC has since then, been very active in organising activities and courses for residents such as family outings, motivation talks, festive celebration - Hari Raya Celebration, Ramadan events, etc.

MAEC has expanded its scope and formed various interest groups to further introduce inter-ethnic activities to residents such as Malay traditional dancing, Hip Hop dancing, Kampong Games, Health Talk, etc. One of our priorities is to organise more inter-ethnic activities to attract non-Malay residents. I invite all residents to support our activities and be part of this big family.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family, all Braddell Heights Grassroots Leaders, residents and friends who have given strong support and cooperation all these years to me and the MAEC Committee.

ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY

The World Cup fervour has engulfed the entire

Singapore. The football fever is running high

in our estate with our CC being featured in

the Straits Times. There is something special

and hot at our CC that is driving our residents

in droves. The top draw among our residents

is not the library or the karaoke lounge. It is

the screening of the world cup matches! Both

young and the old lure alike are flocking to

our CC to watch the matches screened free of

charge on the huge projector screen and the

three 40-inch LCD televisions. The fantastic

atmosphere and the great company at the CC

lures even some of our residents who have

never set their foot in the CC. Furthermore,

saving costs is not the only benefit our

residents enjoy. They are also making new

friends and forging stronger ties with their

fellow residents. Thus, the World Cup has

created another opportunity for our residents

to bond together as a community.

Beautiful is the word ‘Beautiful is the word ‘family’. Unique is

the bonding of family members. To every

man, family is a treasure-something to be

cherished and held dear to the heart. As

the saying “Behind every successful man

is a woman” goes, behind every successful

country is a strong and successful society.

The building block of each society is

a strong, happy and successful family.

Thus, a successful family is not only very

important to the individual but is also

extremely important to the society and

the country. What makes a successful

family? There are certain values that

ensure the success of a family.

Firstly, in every successful family, there

has to be unconditional love between

every single member of the family. The

love and bonding that parents share

with their children are exceptional and

unique. There is no love that could be

compared to this love that parents share

with their children. The love that siblings

share with one another is extremely

special and incomparable. The quarrels

and fights that occur among siblings are

nothing compared to the love that they

share among themselves. When one

member of the family gives in during a

fight or a quarrel, the bonding between

the parties in the family gets stronger.

The respect the member has on one

another also increases. At the end of the

day, despite the fights and arguments,

it is the love that family members share

among themselves that matters.

‘family’...Secondly, the trust between every

family member is very important. This

trust strengthens the love and bonding

between every family member. This trust

is extremely priceless. It is what that

patches up quarrels and fights. It is what

that aids one to get on in life. The trust

and support one gets at every hurdle

one encounters in life would give one the

confidence and courage to accept the

challenges of life and get things going.

This trust is what that motivates one to

aspire to achieve in life.

Next, there has to be understanding

between the members of a family. This

understanding is extremely important as

it helps one to accept the flaws of one’s

family members. This understanding

helps one to support his or her family

member in times of need. It also

enables one to give in when things get

tough between within the family. This

understanding is what that prevents

fights between family members and

ensures that happiness prevails in the

family.

Love, trust and understanding play a

crucial role in ensuring the success of a

family. Friends can come and go in life

but a family will always be a constant in

one’s life. The support one gets from his

or her family is immensely priceless. It is

a boon to have a wonderful and happy

family.

Thus, we should always treasure and

cherish our family.

DENGUE PREVENTION CHECKLIST

AT ALL TIMES• Turn pails and watering cans over and store them

under shelter.

• Remove water in plant pot plates. Clean and scrub theplate thoroughly to remove mosquito eggs. Avoid theuse of plant pot plates, if possible.

• Loosen soil from potted plants to prevent theaccumulation of stagnant water on the surface of thehardened soil.

• Do not block the flow of water in scupper drainsalong common corridors in HDB estates. Avoid placingpotted plants and other paraphernalia over the scupperdrains.

• Cover rarely used gully traps. Replace the gully trapwith non-perforated ones and install anti-mosquitovalves.

• Cover bamboo pole holders after use. Rainwater canpotentially accumulate in these bamboo pole holdersif they are uncovered and create a habitat.

• No tray or receptacles should be placed beneath andor/ on top of any air-conditioning unit so as not tocreate a condition favourable for mosquito breeding.

EVERY OTHER DAY• Change water in flower vases. Clean and scrub the

inner sides of vases. Wash roots of flowers and plantsthoroughly as mosquito eggs can stick to them easily.

ONCE A WEEK• Clear fallen leaves and stagnant water in your scupper

drains and garden. These leaves could collect wateror cause blockages to the drains, thus resulting in thebuildup of stagnant water.

• Clear any stagnant water in your air cooler unit.

ONCE A MONTH• Add prescribed amounts of sand granular insecticide

into vases, gully traps and roof gutters, even if theyare dry. You can see the list of retailers who carry sandgranular insecticides in their stores at this webpage:http://www.nea.gov.sg/aedes/insecticides
