MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIM CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Thank you sincerely to team SANEDI for their invaluable contributions and commitment to making the Institute the success it has grown to be.

Successful collaboration between SANEDI and industry has allowed us to drive several research, development and pilot projects that will contribute to the national energy objectives as demonstrated in the subsequent pages. In this regard, SANEDI has facilitated and supported a number of national and provincial departments to understand possible mitigation actions that would lead to a more efficient and swift deployment of renewable energy in the country.

Although there has been great success in attracting funding from external service providers, there has been a significant decline in third-party funds available towards renewable technologies as a result of policy changes by some international governments and donors who are beginning to focus on countries less developed than South Africa in the developing world. This significant decline poses a tremendous threat to funding stability of SANEDI given its already constrained budget. We are also aware of the fiscal challenges faced by the fiscus which has led to a general decline in research and development.

In the previous financial year, SANEDI obtained a clean audit from the Auditor-General. The achievement confirmed that our efforts in maintaining high levels of compliance, sound financial management, transparent and efficient procurement systems, were and will continue to be successful. This achievement has however, exerted additional pressure on the organisation to continue to grow and entrench the set high compliance achievement.

As technologies such as mini-grid and hybrid solutions continue to develop and mature, opportunities for innovative energy solutions that can make a meaningful contribution towards community development are becoming increasingly relevant towards improved energy access. In this regard, SANEDI’s Programmes individually and collectively contribute towards energy development and innovation in this area.

MESSAGE FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR

Effective internal communication helps to ensure that all members of the organisation are working collaboratively towards a common goal. It develops a cohesive culture and empowers employees to make the right decisions in line with the organisation’s goals. To this end, SANEDI has been facilitating internal communications amongst others via the quarterly Newsletters, Brown Bag Sessions, Intranet, the Website, email Communiqués and staff meetings.

Team SANEDI can experience an increase in morale, productivity and commitment if they are able to communicate up and down the communication chain without fear or favour. To this end, our Newsletters are intended not “to just inform” – They aim to inspire action both ways.

SANEDI wishes to ensure systems and processes that result in more females in substantive senior positions for greater inclusivity and participation in decision making. To this end, SANEDI shall provide exposure to training and opportunities. It is generally known that the Government has declared 2018, a year of Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu with the theme: “Be the Legacy.” The South African Government has encouraged all citizens to celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu by doing activities that will leave legacy on the host communities.

In his words, Nelson Mandela said: “What count in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

In light of the above, SANEDI participated in the events that benefitted the majority of the previously disadvantaged individuals living in the far-flung areas. SANEDI will continue to do so post the centenary celebrations.

The working relations have are continuing to improve between SANEDI and the DoE. Team SANEDI will endeavour to support the DoE’s initiatives to maintain the good working relations.

As a norm, the SoEs are required to submit the Government Communications Information System’s (GCIS) Dashboard on their events/activities to the DoE’s Chief Directorate on a monthly basis. SANEDI has been submitting consistently and the majority of the SANEDI portfolios gave inputs for the Q2 2018/19 Dashboard in accordance with the GCIS’ Acting DG directive.

A big thank you to a pool of team SANEDI`s writers and subject matter experts who worked tirelessly in synergies, for their tremendous contributions in the development of this informative Newsletter.

Team SANEDI`s synergies have definitely culminated in the desired group cohesion.

YOUNG SCIENTIST’S PROJECT AIMS TO REMOVE CO2 PRODUCED BY INDUSTRY

Eskom Expo for Young Scientists (Eskom Expo) is South Africa’s primary and only existing science fair for school learners, where they have an opportunity to exhibit their own scientific investigations and engineering projects. Eskom Expo brings together learners, teachers, professional organisations and educational bodies and government departments to increase awareness in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Innovation (STEMI).

This year saw more than ten (10) Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Storage (CCUS) projects developed by learners during the Eskom Expo Regional finals. A CCUS project that stood-out was the CARBON EATER project developed by Ms Nyeleti Mashale, a Grade 11 learner from Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld High School in Kempton Park during the Ekurhuleni Regional Eskom Science Fair Finals held on 18 August 2018. This unique project aims to reduce CO2 emissions. It won her the CCS Special Award category introduced in 2015 by the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI).

The Carbon Eater aims to absorb the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by factories during the combustion of fossil fuels thus mitigating against climate change. The apparatus works by means of a built cylindrical tube protruding from the ground extending vertically to the top of the funnel that is used to absorb the CO2 from burnt coal. The tube consists of sodium hydroxide and a vacuum which acts as a magnet for flue gases emitted post-combustion.

Interest for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology continues to grow amongst young people in South Africa. This was evidenced during the 2018 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Regional Science Fairs in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal Provinces respectively.

The learner indicated that the sodium carbonates collected at the end of the process can be used to manufacture glass, paper, soaps and detergents amongst other things.

Mashale collected the results by means of recording the change in colour that occurred in the sodium hydroxide when it reacted with different amount of CO2. Mashale also won the Best Female Project. The SANEDI’s Cleaner Fossil Fuels programme will be mentoring her for the International Science Fair (ISF) taking place in October 2018. In addition, the learner will be introduced to the SANEDI team that is investigating CCUS options in South Africa.

Eskom Expo is a Non-Profit Organisation established in 1980 and is a project based education with 24 categories for learners in Grades 5 to 12. The Expo has thirty five (35) affiliated regions in nine (9) Provinces in South Africa and neighbouring countries.

SANEDI entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Eskom Expo with a primary aim of demystifying STEMI related subjects thus raising awareness on low carbon energy solutions. SANEDI provide mentorship for the selected learners at the Regional and International finals.

SANEDI ASSISTS THE SANDF WITH GREENING THEIR ENERGY

Major General Joseph Ledwaba, General Officer Commanding of the Defence Works Formation (DWF), and his son with Dr Karen Surridge as guests of SANEDI at the SANEA awards banquet, Military Museum, Johannesburg.

During 2014 and in subsequent years 2015 and 2016 SANEDI, as a government partner, was invited to speak about renewable energy and energy efficiency at national level at the Department of Defence (DoD) Annual Environmental Seminar. Through this relationship SANEDI was subsequently invited to speak at a provincial environmental forum, to contribute towards improving energy usage and assist in advising towards compliance with the DODs environmental and energy strategy at military installations in Limpopo region.

SANEDI representatives have to-date attended several exploratory trips to military installations at different scale throughout Limpopo Province in order to assess energy needs and be able to provide preliminary informed advice on plausible, sustainable renewable energy and energy efficiency interventions. SANEDI now has a formal agreement to act as an implementing arm for DoD on identified collaborative projects that will address energy needs.

An initial project will entail the construction and operationalization of two (2) 1500L Solar Water Heating (SWH) systems at a pre-selected military base in Limpopo province. Since DoD is already constantly undertaking installation, maintenance and repair of water heating infrastructure at its units, this project aims to support and build capacity in this space for the DoD and its Members.

This can be achieved by implementing an energy efficient, renewable energy hardware system that supports human capacity development (HCD) as well as contributing towards reduced energy costs and reliable water heating energy security.

But wait that’s not all… The Austrian funded government bi-lateral project called the Solar Thermal Training & Demonstration Initiative (SOLTRAIN) programme aims to tackle such needs and create opportunities through addressing the SWH sector across six partner countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) viz. Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. All these partner countries are pursuing policies that enhance security of supply, energy conservation and increase energy access. Furthermore, in all partner countries there are national plans and policies on the support to increase the use of solar thermal systems in place.

SOLTRAIN aims to support the national solar thermal plans started during its activities in 2009, it is currently in its third phase of three-year duration. This in context of this agreement, the parties are able to apply (through the appointed contractor) to the SOLTRAIN programme for financial support towards SWH systems and artisan training (elaborated in subsequent project agreement). Energy Studies (CRSES) at University of Stellenbosch, is the national implementing partner for the SOLTRAIN programme in South Africa.

RECORD (Renewable Energy Centre Of Research and Development) at SANEDI, has been hard at work procuring a SWH system for the DoD, this is the first of several collaborative projects taking place between SANEDI and the DoD after the signing of a 5-year Memorandum of Agreement on 16 July 2018. This project is expected to be partially supported through SOLTRAIN funding and will be implemented by SANEDI, thus cementing the interaction of SANEDI, the DoD and SOLTRAIN in the upcoming phase (commencing July 2019). This SWHS installation will provide hot water to two accommodation bungalows that are used to accommodate military members, approximately half of which are female, performing medical tasks. Furthermore, four DoD members will be trained to maintain this system and will shadow the contractor during installation and maintenance of the SWHS. Along this vein, RECORD

has been delivering a number of trainings on renewable energy, energy efficiency and SWH system understanding and awareness at several military units, in order to prepare members for the upcoming projects.

But wait there’s even more… SANEDI and RECORD under the banner of SOLTRAIN are creating awareness about Renewable Energy (RE), Energy Efficiency (EE) and, more specifically, SWH at military units across Limpopo (for now). Half day awareness training sessions include basic RE and EE understanding and then focus on how SWH works and can make a difference across varying scales. This includes an experiment conducted from a worksheet designed originally for School Science clubs, known as the Science Spazas. In the experiment members of the SANDF (South African National Defence Force) get to test the hypothesis behind why heating water with the sun really works… at the most recent session after only three and a half hours in the sun the test water had reached a whopping 66C! Nothing like a touch and feel exercise to prove science.

The South African government established the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) to direct, monitor and conduct applied energy R&D, demonstration and deployment, as well as to undertake specific measures to promote the uptake of green energy and energy efficiency in South Africa. Its mission is to use applied and energy research and resource efficiency to develop innovative, integrated solutions that will catalyse growth and prosperity to meet its vision of sustainable living for growth and prosperity in Africa.

The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development’s (DID) Green Agenda is about exploring innovative technological ways that are efficient in resources, such as alternative building materials, energy services, water supply, cleaner air and reduction of carbon emissions, amongst others in the Gauteng Province.

“The law of conservation of energy means that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, it can only be transformed or transferred from one form to another. This law has now inspired a new energy innovation in Gauteng,” explains Thembakazi Mali, interim CEO at SANEDI.

“We have entered into partnership with GDID to get a contractor to install bio-digesters that convert organic waste into fuel to be used to run facilities at four schools in Emfuleni Municipality, namely Emmanuel Primary School, Kgomoco Primary School, Lehlasedi Primary School and Seliba Primary School.

“The schools have been using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for cooking in the soup and staff kitchens as part of the feeding schemes. The food waste that is produced is now used as the major source of waste fodder for the

bio-digester to produce biogas. This biogas is significantly helping the schools in saving money which could otherwise be spent on buying additional LPG.

The resultant digestate is a sterile mineral and nutrient rich bio-fertiliser. For that reason, the schools have also been encouraged to start agriculture projects in order to derive benefit from the organic fertiliser produced on site and keep the food security constant and secure.

“These kinds of integrated, multi-purpose community projects are in line with our belief that energy innovation and the efficient use of energy are two key components to mitigating the challenges of providing alternative clean and sustainable energy solutions. With global energy demands on the increase, coupled with the depletion of our natural resources and the negative impact of fossil-based energy sources on the environment, the issues have become a pressing reality,” concludes Mali.

Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) and Energy Management 101 training for municipalities:

An initiative from the Climate Change, Clean Energy and Urban Water in Africa Project.

This quarter, the Climate Change, Clean Energy, and Urban Water in Africa project offered the Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) and Energy Management 101 training to interested municipalities, making a difference to those involved.

The project is a 2.5-year project funded by the EU, with UNIDO as Implementation Partner and REEEP (the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership) as Execution Partner. The initiative promotes the market-based deployment of energy efficiency measures and clean energy technologies and services in municipal waterworks, commencing with pilot demonstration projects in South Africa. The two pilot municipalities engaged in the project include Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and !Kheis Local Municipality.

Water and wastewater systems form the core infrastructure that underpins delivery of water and sanitation services in cities. Water and wastewater plants are also among the largest consumers of electricity in municipalities with equipment running 24 hours a day therefore generating substantial greenhouse gas emissions.

One of the objectives of the Project is to link existing capacity building activities to increase the capacity of municipal staff to identify, source and manage appropriate cleaner energy and energy efficiency interventions to reduce GHG impacts and foster service delivery.

Training was hosted by the National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) and was prepared for interested South African municipal officials involved in municipal energy and water departments respectively. RECP and Energy Management 101 is critical to make project learnings and technical training accessible to the broader municipal stakeholder group.

The training courses were provided free of charge, courtesy of the project where the goal of the RECP course was to equip municipal technical managers and staff to implement RECP methodologies, and therefore to assist their municipalities to reduce energy usage and electricity costs. The Energy Management 101 was to provide participants with the knowledge and tools to perform energy calculations and performance measurements in energy systems.

A number of municipalities across South Africa showed a keen interest in the training which was attended by technical managers and experts working in municipal water, sanitation and energy departments from Elundini Local Municipality (Eastern Cape); Ilembe District Municipality (KwaZulu-Natal); Bushbuckridge Municipality (Mpumalanga); Thabo Mofutsanyana Municipality (Free State); Polokwane Local Municipality (Limpopo); City of Tshwane Metropolitan and City of Ekhurhuleni Metropolitan (Gauteng)

The training was held in Midrand over four days starting with RECP End User training from 30 – 31 July 2018 and Energy Management 101 from 1-2 August 2018 where critical and key learnings of municipal energy efficiency were acquired.

in more of the sun’s heat being trapped around the earth, which causes the earth’s temperature to rise and the climate on earth to change. Experts tell us that this climate change could significantly impact the way we live for example, by increasing temperatures and changing when and how much rain falls and what types of plants grow, and increasing storms.

Carbon capture and storage, or CCS, is a technology that reduces CO2 emissions in order to mitigate climate change. CCS involves:

• The capture of CO2 emissions from

• large sources of CO2 such as coal power generation and industry;

• The transport of the CO2 using trucks or pipelines; and

• The safe and permanent storage of the CO2 in deep underground rock (Deep Saline Formations).

For a rock formation to be suitable for CO2 storage it must be at the right depth - around 800m or deeper below the surface, have capacity - enough microscopic holes or pores in the storage rock to fit the CO2, and containment - have a caprock above the storage rock that liquid and gas cannot move through. The rocks used to store CO2 are very similar to rocks that have stored oil and gas, and naturally occurring CO2, for millions of years which is how we know the process works.

What is climate change and how can CCS help?

Gases in the earth’s atmosphere naturally trap heat from the sun which make the conditions on earth suitable for sustaining plant and animal life - including people. These gases are known as greenhouse gases. Over time, people around the world have been releasing extra greenhouse gases - in particular carbon dioxide (CO2), into the atmosphere through processes such as coal power plants and industry. These extra gases in the atmosphere result
