I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

2 Parish Life Weekly Schedule No, I wasn’t dropped on my head as a baby … nor was I terrorized by some department store Santa Claus somewhere, but I fully admit to being

something of “a Holidays curmudgeon.” One part of it, I suspect, comes with being a bachelor. Another with being a clergyman. I do know some Catholic clergy who really go all in on the decorating, baking, shopping thing (surprise … Bishop Callahan is one of them), but I can take it or leave it. I have never had a genetic make-up done (you know, the “23andMe” thing), but I suspect I am missing the gene that leads to sentimentality. My mother always sent me endearing sweet birthday cards. I always sent her something from “The Far Side.” So when a week back I caught the news headline, “The Race Is on to Save Christmas as Retailers Fight the Supply Chain Crunch,” I thought. Really? Christmas is hanging on getting enough shipping containers unloaded at Long Beach and Los Angeles? Hmm. But of course I am prejudiced. I am a person of faith. I have a very different diagnosis of what is ailing us as a race, a nation, and a Church. It made me think it was time for me to re-visit a prayer/poem by a priest friend, Fr. Austin Fleming, whose words I very much appreciate:

The first one arrived today, Lord, with Halloween more than a week away (not to mention a month till Thanksgiving) ... The first one, Lord, with more to follow -- I'm as sure of that as I am of your birthday yet two months away ... The first one, Lord: this season's first catalogue of things I don't need, things that my family and friends don't need, things that will surely wear out then be thrown into piles of all the things that none of us need but so many of us think we want ... A holiday catalogue of things I don't need yet, things that beguile, lure and seduce me as sure as that fruit in the garden of Eden, now photographed, catalogued and hanging so low ... A catalogue of things I don't need when at the same time, Lord, there are so many things I dearly, truly, deeply need: things that I'll never find in a catalogue, flyer or ad, for there's neither a price nor a discount on things I really need ... I know I need love -- your love, Lord and while I know that I have it, I'm often unmindful, distracted by the bright and the shiny, the new and improved, the fastest, the biggest, the smallest, the smartest, the cleverly, beautifully wrapped and the neatly presented on page after page in catalogues brimming with -- things I don't need ... Don't let me fall for it this year, Lord! Help me make a distinction between the things that I need and the things I don't need, between things that I want but don't really need, between all that I already have … and the extras I surely could do without, between all I treasure as greater than anything I will ever find in catalogues of things that I don't really need.

Amen. Msgr. Mark Pierce

Next Sunday Reflection Material 3

Readings for the First Sunday of Advent December 5

Jeremiah 33:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 3:12-4:2; Luke 21:25-28,34-36

The season of Advent is shaped by two distinct threads in the Scriptures: one is God’s promise (and the peoples’ preparations) to send a Messiah … and the other His promise (and our preparations) for the Lord’s returning at the end of time. So while there are constant words about “preparing,” one does well to check what the focus of that concern is. So, for example, while Jeremiah looks to the promise of a “just shoot” for the house of Israel (looking back), Paul in our second reading waits for the “coming of our Lord Jesus with all his holy ones” (looking ahead). So which coming are you most focused on? Jesus tells us to be vigilant. Really now, what are YOU waiting for? What spiritual exercise would help you to be vigilant to the presence of God in the world?

Two Upcoming Celebrations of our National Day of ThanksgivingOn the evening before Thanksgiving, Wednesday the 24th at 6:30 pm, we will be re-connecting some threads that were cut by COVID’s onset, as parishioners at St. Michael and Resurrection Parishes are invited to join our neighbors at Imman-uel Lutheran (630 Adams Street)in an ecumenical Thanksgiving Service of the Word. Fr. Mark will preach. But, on the positive side, there will be pie to follow.

If you’d like to donate a pie, please take it to Immanuel Lutheran (enter through the doors from the Hamilton Street parking lot) on Tuesday the 23rd or Wednesday the 24th between 9am-3pm or Wednesday evening prior to the service (doors will be open by 5:00pm).

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Thanksgiving Day morning, November 25th, we will celebrate the Eucharist at 8:30 am at the Church of the Resurrection. Sorry, no pie at this one, but something far more sustaining: the Eucharist. Come to one; come to both. Gratitude isn’t a chore … it’s therapy.

A “Living with COVID-19” Refresher for our Greeters/Ushers

Procedures and practices for our liturgical ministers have been in flux since the coronavirus reached us. We seem to be in a space where we are learning to live with it, and so will be adjusting some aspects of the tasks for our Greeters/Ushers (in particular, how we receive the offering). Fr. Mark is inviting all of our Greeters/Ushers to come to any of several opportunities as we finetune things. Those currently active, those who had taken a break from service with COVID’s onset who are now ready to return to service, and new “wannabees” Greeters/Ushers are all invited. Look over the following options and mark your calendar/set your digital reminder for the one that best suits your schedule:

Saturday, November 20, at SM at 5:00 pm (after 4:00 pm Mass)

Sunday, November 21, at CR at 9:30 am (after 8:30 am Mass)

Tuesday, November 23, at SM at 6:30 pmMonday, November 29, at CR at 6:30 pm

The training should last only 30 minutes. People new to the ministry will be asked to stay after the first thirty minutes for a little further work. If you have questions, contact Fr. Mark at 715-842-4283.

Materials for keeping Advent are at the church entrances for you

Christ will be no more present in our world this December 25th than he was last year… unless we make room for him in our lives and schedules. Give your keeping of “the Holidays” a truly Christian shape by picking up and using one of our daily devotionals for the season—either “the little blue book” from the Diocese of Saginaw or “The “Word Among Us” commentary on the daily readings. Choose one or the other for now, until we see that we have enough to go around. Remember, Advent starts next Sunday, November 28. The books are our gift to you, but there are other materials for sale: rings for forming an Advent Wreath (just add greens) and candles for the same.

Please remember all of our homebound and hospitalized parishioners from Resurrection and St. Michael Parishes in your prayers this week.

Begin Advent and celebrate God’s mercy with Steve Angrisano, one of the Church’s most highly acclaimed musicians, composers and storytellers. Join Steve for three nights of music and storytelling at 6:30 pm Monday, Nov. 29; Tuesday, Nov. 30; and Wednesday, Dec. 1 at St. Anne Parish. 700 W. Bridge St.. Come for one night or all three. All are welcome as we prepare the way of the Lord!

Current COVID procedures at Sunday Masses Last updated October 13, 2021 Here’s a rundown of our current procedures at worship:

· For the unvaccinated, the continued wearing of face coverings and social distancing remain strongly recommended; even those who have been vaccinated are encouraged to mask at Mass and at other parish events.

· Most of each church will be available for seating with two exceptions: first, the pews at the very front and the very back of each section will continue to have an empty “buffer” row (behind or ahead of it) for those who would welcome more space between them and others. And for the time being the 5:30 pm Mass at Resurrection will continue to require 6’ distancing and the wearing of masks by all.

· Taking the offering “passively” at the entrances of the church will continue for now. · Sanitizing of “high-touch” areas (pew tops, door handles, etc.) will continue per CDC recommendations. Stay tuned. Things change.

EUCHARISTIC ACCLAMATION Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

MYSTERY OF FAITH

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again, until you come again.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil... and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
