    2021 GOT TO BE A

    BETTER YEAR! .

The calendar says that we are on the verge of finishing up what had to be, in so many ways, one of the most horrible years ever. It started off with a bang as I recall the wonderful Little Christmas dinner dance we had in early January. But soon enough it was all downhill from there. In early February the media started covering a “new corona virus” which was starting to spread from its apparent origin in Wuhan China. Then we learned that the virus was to be called “Covid 19”. By March all agreed that we were in a full blown pandemic as this virus began to spread across the earth. But early on hardly any of us knew anyone personally who actually caught this virus. I did have one friend, in his early 60’s’, who got it in mid-March and was dead after two weeks on a ventilator. Then we have an elderly parishioner who got it and he succumbed within a few days. Then came, for me at least, a huge bombshell in the form of a decision by the archbishop to stop all scheduled celebrations of Mass at least through Easter Sunday. We were facing a public health emergency and he made the right choice. I began to think of 2020 as the “Year with no Easter”. We did keep our 24 hour blessed sacrament chapel open for prayer and it was heavily used around the clock as people came to pray for themselves and their loved ones that they would be spared. We celebrated so-called “Private” Masses at which very few people (about ten or less) were present and we live streamed them over FB. We were told that the obligation to participate in Mass on Sundays and Holy Days was suspended until further notice. In May we were permitted to resume scheduled Masses beginning on Ascension Sunday in late May. We were finally able to initiate those who were going through Journey of Faith. It was very joyful but low key at the same time with the church filled only to one third of it’s capacity. As a very long summer turned into Fall then came the funerals, two of them for beloved members of the parish who were the victims of Covid. There have been something like a dozen funerals over the past many weeks and two coming up this week. I’m ready for a New Year. How about you!

    Happy New Year!

Most of these individuals are longtime members of our parish. Others are Catholics residing in long term care facilities within our parish boundaries to whom we bring Holy Communion. They could also be aided by your prayers.

Thanks to all our volunteers who helped with the various tasks associated with making our Church look as beautiful as it can be for this glorious season. Thanks to all who made generous donations for our Christmas poinsettias and to those who will keep them alive until Lent begins in late February.

With the end of the year upon us, many of us will be considering special gifts to the parish to help keep us fiscally sound through a variety of ways. If you plan to make a special end of year gift by check be sure it has a December 2020 date if you wish to qualify for the tax deduction this year. Because of the impact of the Corona virus on attendance, our income has been down considerably. Some people only contribute when they are present at Mass. As the New Year begins, this could be a good time to consider reviewing your financial support of the parish. If you would like to have more of what you need in 2021, on sure way to achieve that is to set aside the first ten percent of your income for use in building up the kingdom of God. You could divide that by designating 5% for the parish and 5% for the archdiocese, St. Vincent de Paul, Catholic Charities, and the like. It’s not magic, but it has benefited countless people who are seeking to place more trust in the Lord. Be Not Afraid! IRA QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS: A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA is available to those 70 ½ and older. This is a way to make a gift from your IRA without having to pay income taxes on those funds. GIFTS OF STOCK: Gifts of appreciated securities such as stock are an excellent way for you to make a charitable gift. Stocks may be transferred directly to St. Andrew Parish which can be applied to a specific ministry (Youth, Music, Pac-A-Sac, etc. From a tax perspective, a gift of appreciated assets makes good sense. You can alleviate the capital gains taxes, achieve significant tax savings and support your parish or other ministry. 2020 CARES ACT: We also want to make sure you are aware of the impact of the 2020 CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act on charitable giving. The bill was designed to help people and organizations who were impacted by COVID-19. It provides increased tax incentives designed to stimulate philanthropic giving for non-profit entities, like our parish, facing economic hardship during the pandemic. The available tax deduction on gifts to the parish or other ministries are generally limited to a percentage of a taxpayer’s adjusted gross income (AGI). The CARES Act lifts the cap on annual contributions for those who itemize, increasing it from 60% to 100% of AGI for 2020. Any excess contributions available can be carried over to the next five years. For corporations, the new law raises the annual limit from 10% to 25% of taxable income. If you are able to make an additional gift to the parish at this time, it will make a great impact. We recommend using our ONLINE portal. You can access the portal through our parish app or our webpage. UNIVERSAL CHARITABLE DEDUCTION: The universal charitable deduction is an above-the-line deduction of up to $300 and will be available to taxpayers who take the standard federal deduction. Individuals who utilized the standard federal tax deduction, can claim an additional charitable deduction of up to $300 in 2020.
