These capabilities include FEA (finite element analysis) predictive design for optical assemblies. Methods for using FEA and optical performance predictive analysis are evolving, primarily in response to Aerospace and defense applications (including UAS/UAV, missile, tactical and airborne applications) where demanding needs exist. These demanding applications require reliability, repeatability, extreme accuracy and weight savings under conditions of temperature swings, vibrations, shock, and pressure differentials, as well as thermal inputs including laser. FEA applied during the design stage can predict the physics of the current design, under these conditions and others. These predictions and concurrent re-design leads towards the optimal solutions by testing components and optical performance before manufacturing processes have been initiated, and well before in-flight tests. By being included early in the design phase, as part of the Integrated Product Team, Raytheon ELCAN can design high quality imaging devices, used in a wide variety of environments and conditions. This approach shortens product deployment cycle times and produces world class, cost-effective and advanced optical assemblies sooner.
