“The entire life of a good Christian is in fact an exercise of holy desire. You do not yet see what you long for, but the very act of desiring prepares you, so that when he comes you may see and be utterly satisfied.” —St. Augustine

This Tuesday, February 11, the Church celebrates the “World Day of the Sick”. This was established by St. John Paul II. His successor, Pope Francis, on this occasion states, “The Church recognizes in you, the sick, a special presence of the suffering Christ. It is true. At the side of – and indeed within – our suffering, is the suffering of Christ; he bears its burden with us and he reveals its meaning. When the Son of God mounted the cross, he destroyed the solitude of suffering and illuminated its darkness.” If you have sick family members or friends that would benefit from prayerful support, be sure to have them remembered through the prayer ministries of our parishes.

THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! I am truly grateful to all who supported the 2019 Parish Share program. I am so proud to announce that each of our parishes has met its individual assessment and even beyond! The PSP assures that any monies received beyond the assessment, remains in the parish. That being noted, please see below the assessment, the amount received, and the “excess” monies that remain in each individual parish. I am grateful. Please note that if you have not yet completed your pledge for 2019 (and if you do so) the entirety of the pledge will remain in your respective parish.

2. Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

GOSPEL | MATTHEW 5:13-16

FIRST READING | ISAIAH 58:7-10

SECOND READING | 1 CORINTHIANS 2:1-5

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Thus says the LORD: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer,

you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am! If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM 112: 4-9

Text: Psalm 112 The Revised Grail Psalms © 2010 GIA Publications, Inc Tune: Michel Guimont © 1994, GIA Publications, Inc.

1. A light rises in the darkness for the upright; he is generous, merciful, and just. It goes well for the man who deals generously and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice.

2. He will never be moved; forever shall the just be remembered. He has no fear of evil news; with a firm heart, he trusts in the Lord.

3. With a steadfast heart he will not fear; open-handed, he gives to the poor; his justice stands firm forever. His might shall e exalted in glory.

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, proclaiming the mystery of God, I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling,

and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of Spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life.

Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;

it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

THE ORDER OF MASS

PROFESSION OF FAITH

UNIVERSAL PRAYER

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

all bow at the following bolder words and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

CGS CATHOLIC PARISHES

ARING IVING ERVING

PREPARING FOR INFANT BAPTISM

CONFIRMATION SESSIONS FOR ADULTS Usually once or twice during an academic year we offer a series of preparation meetings for high school students or adults who have never been confirmed. Our parish grouping Confirmation has been scheduled for May 17, 2020. During these preparation times we will reflect and examine the Sacraments of Initiation and Reconciliation. We are now in the process of establishing meeting dates. For registration in these sessions, please call the Office for Initiation: 412-857-5356 or email: [email protected]. Why not take advantage of this time for completing your Initiation Sacraments through this preparation!

Thus says the Lord: Share your bread with the hungry,

Shelter the oppressed and the homeless; Clothe the naked when you see them,

And do not turn your back on your own. -Isaiah 58: 7

Sock Drive: We have an opportunity throughout our CGS parishes to help those who are homeless this month. From February 9 through 29, we will have a Sock Drive to benefit Operation Safety Net. At this time, we are collecting white tube socks for adult men. The men who are homeless in our inner city often wear layers of two pairs of socks in the cold weather and walk everywhere. Once a week, they stop into a shelter with showers, discard their dirty socks, and put on two clean pairs. This, along with them being outside in all elements and the importance of foot hygiene are why Operation Safety Net is always in need of men’s tube socks. Each of our churches will have a marked receptacle (Play Pen in Holy Family Hall at SEAS; Box in the back of SMOS church; White bin in the back of the Church Hall at SSJ. There will also be a collection bin inside the door of the SSJ Parish Life Center if Wednesday evening Faith Formation students wish to drop off donations there). Thank you for your compassion and generosity! February 11, the Memorial of our Lady of Lourdes, is also World Day of the Sick. Please keep those people on our bulletin prayer list in your prayers in a special way that day. If you or a loved one would like the prayers of our community or other outreach (such as Holy Communion brought to your home) due to a serious condition that prevents you from attending mass, please contact the Church Office. Also, if you or a loved one is anticipating surgery or are homebound and of advanced age or suffering from an acute or chronic medical condition and desire the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, please contact the Church Office.

Potluck Breakfast Fellowship: Come join us on Wednesday, February 19, at 9:00 a.m. in the Church Hall at SSJ following 8:30 a.m. Mass as we celebrate Mardi Gras! We will not have Breakfast Fellowship in March in observance of Lenten fasting, but welcome all to gather after 8:30 Mass on Wednesday, March 18 to pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary together.

Our Catholic Community offers a Baptism Preparation Class for Expecting and New Parents. It is a requirement before the child’s Baptism may be scheduled. This class is offered monthly. The February class will be on Thursday evening, Feb. 13, 2020, 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Call 412-857-5356 to place your registration and receive important information. If you are thinking ahead, please note that there are significant Church guidelines for your choice of Godparents. Call with any questions you may have.

“How does God tend to work? From the very small to the very great—and by a slow, gradual process. ... So don’t be afraid to do small things at the prompting of God! Plant the seed, make the move, take the risk—take even the smallest step, and don’t worry about who notices or how much attention you’re getting. Sow the seed and leave the rest to the mercy and providence of God.”

— Bishop Robert Barron We hear a lot of parables about farming and planting, and, as with all of the Gospel proclamations, we are to take these personally and apply them to our own lives and ways. We also have been hearing a lot about light in our readings, and we’ve been being reminded not to let the light go out or be hidden. So, it sounds as though we’re to be humble and small, do the little things, and not try to get attention, but at the same time we’re supposed to let our light shine so that others can see our good deeds. Although this may seem contradictory, it really comes down to living for God by being the ‘best version of ourselves’, as Matthew Kelly is known to say. And how do we do that?

Humility is almost always a good answer in the Christian life, and it certainly can apply here! The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines humility as: The virtue by which a Christian acknowledges that God is the author of all good. Humility avoids inordinate ambition or pride, and provides the foundation for turning to God in prayer (2559).

The Catechism also tells us: "Pray as if everything depended on God and work as if everything depended on you.” (St. Ignatius Loyola). Even when we have done our work, the food we receive is still a gift from our Father; it is good to ask him for it and to thank him, as Christian families do when saying grace at meals. (2834)

So, putting it all together, let’s do what we feel called to do, or what we are gifted to do, or what we know we should do, but do it with great humility, remembering and recognizing that it all comes from God…not only the results, but also the many details that lead up to the results. That means He gets both the credit and the thanks. (It is right to give Him thanks and praise!) Someone once asked St. Bernard of Clairvaux what the three most important virtues are.

He is said to have replied, “Humility, humility, and humility.”

CUB SCOUTS - PARVULI DEI (CHILDREN OF GOD) EMBLEM Fr. Grecco presented Domenico Bernardi and Patrick John (P.J.) Doherty the Cub Scouts Parvuli Dei (Children of God) Emblem during our School Liturgy on Friday, January 31, 2020. Domenico and P.J. are 5th grade students at St. Margaret of Scotland School. Fr. Grecco blessed each emblem before pinning them on the boys. The purpose of the Parvuli Dei (Children of God) emblem is to help young boys explore a wide range of activities in order to discover the presence of God in their daily lives as members of their families and parishes, and also to

develop a good, positive self-image through the contributions they can make to the group or community. Congratulations Domenico and P.J., we are extremely proud of your accomplishments!

ANIMAL FRIENDS ASSEMBLY Thank You The Faculty and Students of St. Margaret of Scotland School would like to thank Jessie Van Swearingen, parishioner of Saints Simon and Jude, and her dog Notti for visiting us during our Catholic Schools Week celebration. Jessie and Notti taught the Preschool-8th grade students how to safely meet and greet dogs of all sizes. The students really enjoyed getting to interact with Notti and learned a lot about the job of therapy dogs. The teachers and students also collected pet supplies for Jessie and Notti to take back to Animal Friends. We would also like to thank Pet Valu on Green Tree Road for sponsoring an in-store supply drive on behalf of our school.

CONGRATULATIONS PJAS – Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Congratulations to our 8th Grade students Alejandro Badran and Morgan O’Brien for representing St. Margaret of Scotland School at this year’s PJAS Regional Competitions held at Duquesne University this past Saturday, February 1, 2020. THE ST. VINCENT DEPAUL SOCIETY OF CARNEGIE/GREENTREE/SCOTT (CGS) MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2020

As of October 1, 2019, the St. Vincent de Paul Conferences of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Margaret of Scotland, and Ss. Simon & Jude have merged into one. Until we have a new parish name, we are calling it the “CGS” Conference (Carnegie, Green Tree, Scott). First, we want to say THANK YOU for your generous donations. Every donation, no matter how small, makes an impact on someone’s life! Beginning with January 2020, we will be presenting you, the parishioners, with a monthly summary of how your donations are allowing us to assist those in need. At times, we will also provide a short story of one or two of the cases.

All the money used to assist those in need comes from parishioners through second collections at Masses, poor box, private donations, and large donations from benefactors who may or may not be parishioners. Also, food is donated by parishioners, other non-profits, schools and grocery stores. An example of someone who we helped this month is a working single mother with four children, one of whom has a disability. She is forced to vacate the apartment she has lived in for several years due to maintenance and mold problems that are not being corrected. We helped her get into a new apartment.

ALTAR SERVERS Father Alek and Deacon Jim will soon be training new Altar Servers to serve at the weekend Masses at all of our churches! You may choose the location (SEAS, SMOS, SSJ) or you can train at all three! Students in Fourth Grade and up are welcome! An informational flyer was sent home with students this week. If you did not get one, or would like more information, please contact Deacon Jim: [email protected]. By becoming an Altar Server, you not only will be able to share your God-given talents by helping a priest at Mass, but you will be very close to the miracle of the priest changing bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.

ST. MARGARET SCHOOL

CLASSROOM CHRONICLES Each week we will highlight the amazing things that are going on in our classrooms here at St. Margaret of Scotland School. Mrs. Jaclyn Walsh – 4th Grade

Fourth Grade students have been busy preparing for “Invention Convention” to be held at Seton LaSalle Catholic High School in March. This is a science fair style event that will give students the opportunity to develop skills in problem solving, thinking creatively, and experimenting as they invent a new product. Students will give their “sales pitch” for judges at the event. Our parish community had a sneak peak of the student’s projects during the Science Fair that was held during the Catholic Schools Week Open House at the end of January. Another amazing opportunity that our class is participating in is Action Math Baseball sponsored by Pittsburgh Pirates Charities. In this program, students are learning math skills through baseball statistics in a way that is fun and engaging. Each student is the “manager” of their own team, which they got to choose the team name and create a team pennant in Art Class! Action Math Baseball promotes higher order science, technology, engineering, and math skills (STEM). Students are

enjoying playing games against one another in the classroom in real time while computing stats for their players. The program will conclude with our top players traveling to PNC Park in May to compete in a “World Series” against the top players from other schools in the Pittsburgh/WV Area. Let’s Go Bucs!
