World Championship title and break the South American dominance at international level, but Poland were unable to pull off the same surprise in the men’s tournament. The 2006 FIVB World Championships were a resounding success, thanks to the cooperation of the Japan Volleyball Asso-ciation and Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) as Host TV Broadcaster.

Part of this success included a new record for spectator attendance at a volleyball event in Japan when 19,836 passed through the turnstiles at the Saitama Super Arena.

After seeing his team’s unbeaten record in the tournament smashed in the last game, Brazil’s disappointed coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes could only congratulate his players.

Brazil take the silver medal

“They fought hard until the very last mo-ment. They made a great effort, stuck to the ball till the end. They worked hard in the tie-break set and I think in that kind of situation it’s difficult to decide which team wins and which loses,” he said. The silver medal was the team’s second after their 1994 home result in Sao Paolo.

Serbia and Montenegro completed their fairytale tournament with the bronze medal. Playing in their first World Cham-pionship for 28 years, the team swept aside defending champions Italy for the second time in the competition to take the

medal. This was a remarkable achieve-ment by a team that was ranked 30th in the world when they arrived in Japan.

The 2002 winners Italy were left with a disappointing fourth place finish af-ter the straight-set defeat to Serbia and Montenegro.

Italy’s coach Massimo Barbolini, who had almost predicted his team’s downfall after praising the Balkan team, returns to Italy to coach his club Perugia, after stepping in at the last minute to coach the national team at the World Championship.

Serbia-Montenegro ended with an 8-3 record and their fourth-place finish is the same as four years ago.

Italy swept past France in straight sets to clinch fifth place. The European champio-ns won a fast-paced match to seal victory on their fourth match point with a classic spike from Alessandro Fei.

Germany beat USA 3-2 in a wonderful ma-tch to take ninth place. Germany won the first two sets, missed a match point in the third, and finally clinched it on their third
