    2.1 Technical Description

The upper guide bracket transfers the radial forces caused by the movement of the unit rotatingparts to the foundation.

Horizontal forces are transmitted to the bracket through the guide bearing installed in the centreof the bracket.

Another function of the guide bracket is to support a number of other unit components forexample, the guide bearing, the oil pipe lines, generator top cover, the slip ring cover, amongstothers.

The bracket is composed of a central part to which radial arms are welded or attached by usingflanges. For the upper guide bracket, the outer ends of the arms rest on the support on the stator frame(Fig.1 ).

5 Pre-Conditions & PreparationThe bracket is delivered at site with 4 arms disassembled due to transport limitations. Thebracket arms must be bolted to the central part of the bracket at the pre-assembly area.

Sufficient area must be available for the complete bracket assembly for the placement of parts, levelling, and connection of arms. Prepare an area study considering the schedule, the numberof units and the available workforce (parallel work).

Also provide some leveled base plates to keep the parts aligned during assembly. Whenavailable, some support pedestals must be used at site to assemble the bracket arms. Ifpedestal supports are not available at site, use shims over some leveled base plates in order toassure leveling and also to protect the piece final painting.

    5.1 Transport & Packing

Select the hoisting tackle by reference to the weights indicated in the drawings. Attach the hoisting tackle to the marked points, otherwise as closely to the centre of gravity aspossible and in a symmetrical arrangement to prevent damage to machined surfaces.

Lift the part carefully out of the packing and place it on a proper support base at the pre-assembly area on its normal position.

Note: Check the instructions and drawings regarding Lifting and Transportation Diagram beforehandling the component.

IMPORTANT: Handle the machine parts with particular care. The machined surfaces, inparticular, should be protected from damage, abrasive dust and moisture when opening the

cases, during transport, when placing the parts down and during erection work.

    5.2 Removing the Packing

Remove the packing components so that the machine parts can easily be taken out of thepacking.

    5.3 Cleaning the machine parts

Treat all the machined surfaces, including the associated small parts, e.g. screws, bolts andguide pins. Carefully remove the anti-rust protection layer (Tectyl or similar) from machinedsurfaces. Clean all the holes, blow with compressed air and wash with kerosene. For cleaning,

remove any pin. Check the machined surfaces for unevenness by means of a straight edge anddress with a fine file and a hone, where required.

    6 Installation Procedure

    6.1 Assembly of bracket arms

6.1.1 Bolted connectionsThe brackets should first be assembled in the erection bay before lowering them into the pit.The missing arms shall be attached using screws and fitted pins in line with the drawinginstructions.

Figure 2: Joint flange with screws and fitted pins

Check guide bracket's central part for true horizontal positioning, using a frame-type spirit level.Place the level on the machined surfaces at four points spaced uniformly over the periphery. Ifnecessary, correct the bracket position by inserting shims between the bracket and the leveledbases.

Apply a uniform, thin coat of MOLYKOTE paste G on the keys and fitted pins and secure themto the arm flanges with screws. Fit the parts in accordance with the markings provided.

Attach hoisting tackle of sufficient load capacity, to eyebolts screwed up to the collar into abracket arm. Gently lift the arm with the crane and check the horizontal position using a woodenspirit level. If necessary, correct the rope position or length.

Apply a coat of MOLYKOTE paste G to the joint faces of the arm and the bearing faces of thebolt hexagonal heads, bolt threads and nuts. Carefully move the arm to the bracket using thehoisting tackle and use the fitted pins to guide the assembly. Insert the screws and nuts with thelocking elements and tighten them slightly.

Important:The markings of the arms must correctly match. Avoid damage to the fitted pins.

For better adjustment, install a hydraulic jack or similar device in the center underneath the arm joint flange. Tighten the arm bolts firmly in the proper sequence (example given in Fig. 3 ).

Figure 3: Typical scheme for tightening the joint bolts, viewed after bolt insertion

6.2 Placing the bracket in the pit

When assembled, the bracket should be moved to the pit. See the following figure regardinglifting view example.

    6.3 Upper Guide Bracket

For the installation of an upper bracket in the pit, the stator and the generator rotor must bealready in place and all the generator and shaft must be aligned radial and axially, released forfurther assembly steps.

Lightly lift the bracket by means of hoisting tackle, check for truly horizontal position by meansof a spirit level and correct the rope position, if necessary.

IMPORTANT : Note the upstream marking. Sort the shims in accordance with the data shown onthe drawing. Insert them between the arms and the seating surfaces, aligning them to the outercontours of the arms. Place the bracket onto the stator seating surfaces. Perform thepreliminary centering of the upper bracket according to item 6.4 of this instruction. Check thepositioning (centering and elevation) and record the results

Move the machine part over the stator and rotor with the part freely suspendedconcentrically over the shaft, and lower it over the shaft at the lowest possible speeddown to about 20 mm over the seating surfaces.

Note: Check the bracket for elevation and adjust any misalignment by means of shims.Perform the centering of the upper bracket according to item 6.4 of this instruction.Check and record the results.

    6.4 Bracket Centering

Before centering the bracket, the rotor shaft must be aligned (plumb check) and the turbine rotormust be already centered.

After placing down the bracket on its correct assembly elevation, verify its concentricity bymeasuring the distance D between an inner machined diameter, for example the bearingsegment support, to the external diameter of the shaft. Make use of some inside micrometers.

At least 4 equally spaced points around the circumference shall be measured. Take themeasuring points in accordance to the bracket arms direction.
