1.1 INTRODUCTION The Rosemount Field Communication Unit, FCU 2165/2175, provides seamless integration of tank gauges from different vendors. The FCU continuously polls data from field devices such as radar and servo tank gauges, data acquisition units, I/O Modules, other FCUs, Enraf® CIU:s etc and stores data in a buffer memory.

With the FCU it is possible to connect to devices from vendors such as Enraf®

and Whessoe® (Varec®, GPE®, L&J® etc. are coming possibilities).

Whenever a request for data is received from a host, the FCU can immediately send data from the updated buffer memory. The FCU can service requests from a wide range of hosts/DCS systems such as Rosemount TankMaster®, Enraf® Entis, Yokogawa®, ABB®, Honeywell®, Foxboro® among others (it is possible to connect any system using Modbus protocol).

The operation of the FCU is determined by the configuration downloaded to it by a host configuration program. Configuration information is downloaded to the FCU over the Ethernet network, which can therefore be done remotely.

The configuration of the FCU can be modified on-line by downloading modifications from the host configuration software. For example, new gauges can be added, a gauge can be modified from one type to another, or moved from one port to another.

Each of the ports can be configured either as a master or a slave connection, providing ultimate configuration flexibility. The FCU 2165 has 10 ports of which 4 are reserved for RS 232. The FCU 2175 can be ordered with 8, 16, 24 or 32 flexible ports. See pages 1-4 to 1-5.

For applications requiring more capacity or when devices are distributed over a large area, multiple FCUs can be used. Two FCUs can also be connected in parallel with one unit operational and the other as a redundant backup. The backup unit is automatically activated in case of a primary unit failure (hot standby). See “Configuration for Redundancy” on page 2-44.

The number of devices per port varies between different manufacturers (protocol and / or electrical interface dependent) and may also have physical limitations imposed by the quality and length of field cables and distribution of devices (the table below shows typical values).

In some cases devices can be multi-dropped to increase the capacity of a port. For example, multiple Enraf® CIU’s could be multi-dropped onto one port. However, in order to maximize performance, the devices are normally spread over a greater number of interfaces than generally necessary. This serves to increase the overall data acquisition rate.

1.2 FCU 2165

Figure 1-1. Functional Drawing of FCU 2165

The FCU 2165 enclosure is delivered with 13 holes suitable for 20 mm glands. All field terminations and Mains Power enter the enclosure through one of the gland entries provided. An entry is also reserved for the Ethernet connection to the Processor Module.

The processor module is designed to accept a range of electrical interface drivers: RS 232 (standard), RS 422, RS 485, Rosemount TRL/2, Enraf® BPM and Whessoe® Current Loop.

Some of the electrical interface drivers require a specific Field Isolation Module, mounted onto the barrier plate (i.e the Rosemount TRL/2 Module requires the Rosemount TRL/2 Field Isolation Module). If Field Isolation Modules are required, they are always pre-mounted in factory. They connect to the Processor Module through a short cable terminated with an RJ12 plug.

1.3.2 Field Interface Carrier Module and Field Interface Module

The Field Interface Carrier Module has 16 sockets which are designed to accept a range of Field Interface Modules. The FCU 2175 can accommodate 2 Field Interface Carrier Modules therefore providing a maximum of 32 serial channels.

The Field Interface Modules provide the electrical interface to the outside world. The following Field Interface Modules are available:

• RS 232• RS 485• RS 422• Enraf® Bi Phase Mark• Rosemount TRL/2• Whessoe® Current Loop

Figure 1-7. Field Interface Carrier Module equipped with 13 Field Interface Modules (11 Enraf® Bi Phase Mark and 2 Rosemount TRL/2).

1.3.3 Field Isolation Module

The Field Isolation Modules provide electrical isolation and transient protection to the FCU 2175. The external field cabling is terminated to the Field Isolation Modules, mounted on the rear panel of the 19-inch rack.

1.3.4 Number of Supported Devices

The real-time database has a capacity of 256 devices. In a tank gauging application, a device would be a single tank gauge, therefore 256 gauges can be supported by a single FCU 2175.

For applications requiring more capacity multiple FCUs can be used. Further for applications where devices are distributed over a large area it is often more convenient to use more than one FCU 2175.

The FCU 2175 does not impose any constraint on the number of devices that can be connected to a single port, however, for performance reasons, it is normal to distribute the devices over a number of ports.

The number of devices per port varies depending on device manufacturer. See table on page 1-2 for the number of devices per port based upon manufacturers’ recommended guidelines.

1.3.5 Front Panel

The LEDs show the transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) status for each of the serial ports.

The front panel is normally provided on hinges which allows it to be opened for maintenance and configuration.

2.2 CONFIGURATION TOOLS SOFTWARE

The FCU is configured with the FCU 2165/2175 Configuration Tools software. When the FCU is delivered it is normally pre-configured in factory. Then it is not necessary to use Configuration Tools software unless you like to change the configuration.

Before starting, make sure to have sufficient site documentation and that you have already planned how the new FCU will be connected to your system.

The following configuration steps are required:

You can prepare the configuration disconnected from the FCU.

If you are making the configuration connected to the FCU, the computer can either be:

• Directly connected to the FCU - use a crossed network cable.• Connected to the FCU via the network - use straight cables.

Either way, connect the computer to the Ethernet port on the FCU. See pages 1-4, 1-10 and 1-11.

NOTE!The PC and FCU must have the same network ID, i.e. the first three groups of numbers in the IP Address(1) must be identical but the last group must differ. If the PC is directly connected to the FCU and if an IP address change is necessary, it is easiest to change IP address on the computer. If you have a network connection and need to change IP address, use a terminal emulation program such as Windows Hyper Terminal.See “Changing IP Address / FCU Name” on page 2-40.

(1) If you are unsure of the IP address you can use PC Link, see page 2-38.

2.4 CHANGING IP ADDRESS / FCU NAME

When configuring the FCU with the Configuration Tools software, it is required that the PC and the FCU has the same network ID which sometimes requires a change of IP address. Changing IP address and / or changing FCU name is done with a terminal emulation program such as Hyper Terminal.

The FCU has to be configured with a unique IP Address.

The FCU has a configured Host / Target(1) name, used by PC Link as a means of unique identification of each device.

Where more than one FCU is installed on the same network the Host/Target names need to be unique to each FCU.

2.4.1 Establishing Contact with the FCU

1. Connect to the FCU Engineering port, marked SER4 on the FCU 2165 and TERM on the FCU 2175. A standard null modem cable can be used.

2.5 CONFIGURATION FOR REDUNDANCY

The two FCUs should be configured the same except for their PC-Link Names and Network IP Addresses. Both will have the same Port Configuration, and both will have the same field devices or gauges configured. The FCUs communicate operational status information with each other via a dedicated RS 232 serial link. This control link may be configured on any available serial port of the FCUs.

When downloading configuration information or changes to the FCUs, it is important to remember to download the same settings to both units. It is not important which FCU is selected as the Master and which as the Slave; this only sets the initial operation condition after downloading. Later operation will be determined by the FCUs.

3.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter covers the main steps when interfacing Whessoe gauges to the Rosemount FCU2165/2175. It is not intended as a detailed protocol description of the Whessoe protocol nor is it a detailed explanation how to install, configure and troubleshoot Whessoe gauges.

For detailed instructions on Whessoe Gauges, refer to the original Whessoe Installation and Maintenance instructions.

The FCU2165/2175 supports Whessmatic 500 and Whessmatic 550.

3.2 GENERAL INFORMATION

This chapter gives an product overview and how the products interconnect with each other.

3.2.1 Field Transmitters

There is a wide variety of Whessoe gauging instruments and transmitters.

The supported electrical interface for WM500 and WM550 is a digital 20mA Current Loop. The WM 500 pre-dates WM550.

WM500 is associated with the following gauges and instruments:• Fig. 1071(1) Outstation

The device talking WM500 protocol is the Fig. 1071 outstation.

WM550 is associated with the following gauges and instruments:• Fig. 1351 Transmitter

3.2.2 Electrical Interface

The electrical interface to the Whessoe gauges is based upon a digital Current loop. In normal circumstances, the standing current is set to a nominal 20mA. The current is set by adjusting a voltage source in the MASTER device. When transmission takes place, the current is modulated at the configured baud rate between 0mA and the standing current. Although the standing current is nominally quoted as 20mA it is quite common to find that reliable communication is only possible at some other setting. Normally a range of 13mA to 30mA is used to get a reliable communication.

The FCU2165/2175 has been designed to interface with the electrical interface of the Whessoe gauge using an integrated Current Loop (C/L) interface.

The integrated C/L interface design for the FCU2165/2175 has a limitation on the maximum output voltage (48 VDC) available to drive the Current loop. If the Data Loop contains a lot of transmitters and/or the Data Loop is very long the available output voltage may be insufficient to drive the Loop. In this case the external DLIC interface should be used (Umax: 70 VDC).

Where the FCU2165/2175 and/or DLIC are replacing an existing system, the standing loop voltages of the system being replaced e.g the Whessoe DACS, Whessoe Fig. 1097 (mini receiver) or Fig. 1098 should be measured whilst doing the site survey. This information can subsequently be used to select the correct device.

3.2.3 Loop Architecture

The Whessoe Loop is a 2 wire serial loop and is based upon a single MASTER multiple SLAVE configuration.

The FCU2165/2175 is the MASTER that initiates all communication.

The SLAVE device are the tank transmitters.

The FCU2165/2175 device also provides the Current Loop power supply.

The WM550 protocol allows for up to 32 devices.

Each data loop can therefore accommodate up to 32 devices. Each device is configured with a unique address in the range 0 to 31.

3.2.4 Communication Parameters

The data bits, parity setting and stop bits are fixed at:• 8 Data Bits.• EVEN Parity• 1 Stop Bit

The available baud rates are:• 150• 300• 600• 1200• 1800• 2400

Earlier models of Whessoe gauges have the baud rate set by links on the communications board in the Outstation or Transmitter. The FCU2165/2175 must be set to use the same baud rate as the Outstations / Transmitters on the Loop.

3-2 Section 3. Interfacing to Whessoe Gauges

Page 69: FCU 2165/2175 - Spartan Controls/media/resources/rosemount tank... · Installation on a non-metallic tank is not certified, and is not allowed. ... FCU 2160 RS 232, RS 485 or TRL/2

Reference Manual 308018EN, Edition 3BSeptember 2007 Rosemount Tank Radar REX

Later Fig. 1315 Transmitters and ITG are provided with an automatic baud rate detection mechanism, which will attempt to “lock on” to the baud rate used on the Loop. The FCU2165/2175 should be set to use the desired baud rate, suitable for the length of the Loop and the number of Transmitters on it. Where possible, the baud rate of the existing system should be determined before decommissioning the existing Loop Master.

3.3 COMMISSIONING THE FCU2165/2175

This chapter describes how to configure the FCU2165/2175 for communication to the Data Loop.

3.3.1 Preparation Prior to undertaking this work the following data will be required:

1. The Baud Rate of the Whessoe Data Loops.2. The number of transmitter on each Loop.3. The Gauges Type and Address of each gauge on each Loop.4. The output voltage at standing current from existing MASTER.

This information needs to be entered through the FCU configuration tools, see “Configuration Tools Software” on page 2-10.

Setting the Whessoe loop current

There are two general techniques to set the Loop current:• General procedure: increase the Loop Voltage in steps until you get

reliable communication.• Alternative procedure: use a meter to set the loop current to a precise

value.

General Procedure• Ensure the Field Loop is disconnected.• The Rx LED should be on, the Tx LED should be flashing periodically.• Adjust the Loop output voltage to a minimum.• Connect the Field Loop.• The Rx LED should still be on, the Tx LED should be flashing

periodically.• Increase the Loop Voltage until the Rx LED goes off and/or starts to

flash periodically.• Then slowly increase the Loop Voltage until the Rx and Tx LED´s flash

consistently with no gaps.• Check that data is being displayed in TankMaster.

If any tanks continue to give communication problems and the field transmitter is working properly, increase the Loop current in small steps until the problems disappear.

If by increasing the Loop Voltage the Rx LED does not go off or starts to flash, there may be insufficient loop voltage to drive the loop or possibly a problem with the interface and/or data loop.

Alternative ProcedureAlternatively, if you are replacing an existing Whessoe interface unit do the following.

• Measure the output voltage of the existing unit when the current is at standing value (host communication stopped).

• Connect the current loop to the FCU2165/2175 Whessoe port and adjust the voltage to the same level as measured on the replaced unit.
