Cambridge English: First, also known as the First Certificate in English (FCE), is an English language
examination provided by Cambridge English Language ssessment (previously known as !niversity of
Cambridge E"#L Examinations)$ %t is an upper&intermediate, international English language 'ualification that
focuses on Level of the Common European Framework of *eference for Languages (CEF*)$+-

History
%ntroduced in /0/, the Lower Certificate in English (LCE) was the second English language exam developed
for speakers of other languages by the !niversity of Cambridge Local Examinations "yndicate, the organisation
that would later be known as Cambridge ssessment$ 3he arrival of thousands of refugees from the "panish
Civil 8ar and occupied Europe into the !7 had created a growing need for language assessment$ 3he LCE was
intended to meet a demand for the certification of an English proficiency level below that of the Certificate of2roficiency in English (C2E)$
#ne hundred and forty&four students sat the first LCE exam on 9une /0/$ +:- 3he exam was divided into three
sections.

Cambridge English. First for "chools offers candidates the choice of taking their exam on either a computer or
on paper$ 3he "peaking test is taken face&to&face with two examiners and two candidates, providing a realistic
and reliable measure of ability$+0-
1. Reading and Use of English ( hour B minutes)
3he *eading and !se of English paper has seven parts and B 'uestions$ 3he paper contains texts totalling
approximately 0,111 to 0,B11 words and candidates are expected to understand different types of text, such as
fiction, newspapers and maga=ines, promotional and informational materials$ %n Cambridge English. First for
"chools the text topics are targeted at the interests of school&age pupils$
%n 2arts 4:, candidates read a range of texts and complete tasks that test their knowledge of grammar and
vocabulary$ 2art has eight multiple&choice 'uestions related to vocabulary in a text$ 2arts and 0 involve
completing gaps in a text (i$e$ choosing G forming the correct word for each gap)$ Each 'uestion in 2art : has a
sentence and a 5key6 word, which must be used to complete a second sentence so that it has the same meaning
as the first sentence$
%n 2arts B4, candidates read a range of texts and complete tasks that test their reading ability$ 2art B involves
answering multiple&choice 'uestions about a text, with candidates expected to be able to read a text for detail,
opinion, tone, purpose, main idea, implication and attitude$ 2art > involves choosing paragraphs to fill the gaps
in a text, with candidates expected to demonstrate understanding of the structure and development of a text$ 2art
involves matching statements to the correct part of a text or several short texts, with candidates expected to

examiners$ Candidates are expected to be able to participate in discussions, express opinions, exchange ideas
and reach decisions through negotiation$
2art is a short conversation with the examiner$ 3he examiner will ask the candidate some 'uestions about their
lives, focusing on areas such as work, leisure activities and future plans$ Candidates are expected to respond to
the examiner6s 'uestions, give basic personal information about themselves and use general social and
interactional language$

speaking for minute without interruption$ Each candidate is asked to compare two colour photographs and
comment about the photographs in response to a task read out by the examiner and a prompt 'uestion written

Scoring
ll candidates (pre& and post&1B) receive a "tatement of *esults, with those scoring high enough also

From 1B onwards, candidates receive a Cambridge English "cale score for each of the four skills (*eading,

From 1B, the "tatement of *esults and the Certificate have the following information about the candidate6s
performance.

• CEF/ leel for the oerall e-am.
3he certificate also contains the !7 Aational Iualifications Framework (AIF) level$+-
3he candidate6s overall score is averaged from the individual scores for each skill (*eading, 8riting, Listening

Cambridge English. First is targeted at CEF* Level , which is e'uivalent to a Cambridge English "cale score

Cambridge English: First, also known as the First Certificate in English (FCE), is an English language
examination provided by Cambridge English Language ssessment (previously known as !niversity of

for speakers of other languages by the !niversity of Cambridge Local Examinations "yndicate, the organisation
that would later be known as Cambridge ssessment$ 3he arrival of thousands of refugees from the "panish
Civil 8ar and occupied Europe into the !7 had created a growing need for language assessment$ 3he LCE was
intended to meet a demand for the certification of an English proficiency level below that of the Certificate of
