I myself have justbecome the proud owner of a HondaMSX125 motorcycle and feel the joy of whata new car or motorcycle brings. It is alwaysour goal a Vertu Honda to remain true to thespirit of Honda, delivering great experiencesfor every one of our valued customers, ontwo wheels or four.

“Think young and quest for the three joys;Creating, Buying and Selling.” These are thepillars that Soichiro Honda built the HondaMotor Company around, when he foundedthe company back in 1948. A trulypassionate engineer, who believed he alwaysthought best with a wrench in his hands,and dreamt of becoming the Napoleon ofmechanics. Mr Honda’s key belief was that ifyou make a superior product then peoplewill buy it. I believe he would be a veryproud man if he were around, in what wouldbe his 110th year, to see the ferocious newCivic Type R, all new Jazz and outstandingnew HR-V launched in the UK. What a lineup to celebrate 50 years of Honda in GreatBritain. I know that our teams at VertuHonda, up and down the country, will takeas much joy from selling these products, asyou and our customers, will take frombuying and owning them.

I have been lucky enough to attend the Isleof Man TT races in June, and for the firsttime ever, the British Grand Prix atSilverstone. The TT races, to me, are thepurest form of Honda I have everexperienced. It was an absolute pleasure tosee so many people feeling the totalexhilaration of road racing on the worldfamous, and historic island. The competitionfrom all motorcycle brands challenges teams

for better. Honda riders Bruce Anstey, andthe legendary John McGuinness, were bothvictorious this year on the HondaCBR1000RR Fireblade. On the other hand,the challenge of Formula 1 for our McLarenHonda team is proving a hugely steeplearning curve for our engineers. True to ourroots though and what Mr Honda once said;“My biggest thrill is when I plan somethingin life and then it fails, my mind is then filledwith ideas on how I can improve it.” Thetotal obsession with detail, perfection andwinning will prevail in Formula 1 for Honda,just as winning is habitual on two wheels,and in the exciting British and World TouringCar series.

Honda has once again retained its crown asthe UK’s most reliable used carmanufacturer, scooping top spot for theninth consecutive year in researchconducted by What Car? and WarrantyDirect.

The independent research analysed 50,000live Warranty Direct policies for carsbetween three and eight years old, to givea Reliability Index of 37 car manufacturers.The Index takes into account failure rates,age of car, mileage and cost of repair togive an overall score for reliability.

The achievement further underlinesHonda’s reputation as a trusted anddependable manufacturer; with low failurerates and lower than average repair costscompared to competitors. The researchalso reveals the Honda Jazz to be the mostreliable used car on the UK market today,

the second such accolade for the Jazz thisyear, and one of many that the ever-popular supermini has won over the years.

Jim Holder, Editor of What Car? magazinecommented: “Honda’s success in theReliability Index is chiefly down to lowfailure rates. However, when things do gowrong, the cars are also relatively cheap tofix. Reliability is always one of the keyattributes buyers look for when consideringa used car purchase, so manufacturers thatconsistently demonstrate durability willalways do well with the consumer.”

Honda Dealers claim second place in the annualAuto Express Driver Power survey, climbing twoplaces from the previous year.

Honda dealers have been awarded second place,scoring 89.8 per cent, in the annual AutoExpress Driver Power survey. The magazinesurveyed over 50,000 readers and website visitorsabout their dealership experience and asked themto rate their performance across seven categories.

With consistent high scores in each category,Honda dealers were rated highly for their attitudeand helpfulness with customers and drivers.Technical knowledge of dealer staff was alsopraised, as well as their efficiency andfriendliness.

Honda owners, according to the survey, are “morepleased than ever”.

EXTREME MACHINE

The new CR-V featured in the last issue ofThe Link. At the time we were still awaiting thearrival of the new nine speed automatictransmission. The wait is now over. Therefreshed CR-V also sees the arrival of the new160PS 1.6 i-DTEC engine which utilises a twinstage turbo to provide the best power-to-consumption ratio of any engine on sale today.

With environmental concerns linked directly tothe cost of ownership, the new engine producesjust 129g/km of CO2 and does a combined57.7mpg. Those drivers choosing the ultrasmooth nine-speed automatic are not penalisedin their choice of transmission, with animpressive combined mpg of 55mpg.

Bigger than last year, due to an increased number of categories, the2015 Carbuyer Awards focused on what buyers actually search foron the popular website when researching a car purchase, withreliability a significant factor in the decision-making process.

In the last issue of The Link we focused onalternative ways of driving away a brandnew Honda. Personal Contract Purchase(PCP) is an increasingly popular way bywhich people fund their car purchase. Some80% of new car purchases are completed inthis way with many people takingadvantage of generous depositcontributions and highly competitive,sometimes even zero, interest rates.

In this issue we will focus on anothermethod, which again offers an alternativeway of driving away a brand new Honda fora selection of customers.

For Personal Contract Hire (PCH) you ineffect hire the car, for a set duration of yourchoice, in exchange for a monthly fee. At

the end of the hire agreement you simplyhand the car back. There is no option topurchase, unlike with a PCP. Businessestend to manage their fleets in this way, theonly difference for personal contract hire isthe payment of VAT on the monthlyamount.

The benefits of personal contract hire

• Monthly repayments will be on averagebetween 35% and 45% less costly thanthe repayments on a car loan. Also, inthe majority of lease agreements, only asmall deposit is necessary, usuallyamounting to 3 monthly payments.

Honda has set a new GUINNESS WORLDRECORDS title for ‘Lowest fuel consumption– all 24 contiguous EU countries (all cars)’,recording an average 100.31 miles pergallon over 8,387 miles, in a 25 day driveacross all 24 EU contiguous countries.

Behind the wheel of a Honda Civic Tourer1.6 i-DTEC for the entire journey were twomembers of Honda’s European Research &Development (R&D) team, Fergal McGrathand Julian Warren, who took on thechallenge to further demonstrate theimpressive real-world fuel economy of theTourer.

The remarkable distance travelled is similarto the team driving to Australia from theirhome in the UK, stopping just nine times torefuel. The car achieved an incredibleaverage 932 miles on each tank of fuel, at a

total fuel cost for the whole journey of just£459*.

The team set out on their epic road tripfrom Aalst, Belgium, on Monday June 1st,navigating the continent in a clockwisedirection. They returned to their start pointon Thursday June 25th, recording theincredible fuel economy figures whichexceed the Tourer’s quoted efficiency of74.3mpg by more than 25%.

A tyre deflation warning system, known as DWS, was firstintroduced by Honda on the 2009 model Civic and has since beenadded to 2010 onwards CRV, 2012 onwards Civic, 2013 CR-Z and2014 Accord ranges.

This system uses wheel speed sensors to monitor individual wheelspeeds and detect large changes in tyre pressure as rotationalspeed is altered by rolling radius which is reduced when a tyre isunder-inflated.

If a loss of pressure is detected then a dashboard warning lamp willbe illuminated to indicate you may have under inflated tyre/tyres.

False activations can occur for many reasons suchas incorrect tyre size, load rating or speed rating;significant variation in tread depth across the same axleor differing tyre makes and models. The DWS light canalso come on following long periods of wheel spin.

In order for this system to function correctly it must be initialisedby the driver whenever tyre pressures are checked or adjusted. It isroutinely initialised by your dealer when your vehicle is serviced or atyre/wheel replacement is carried out. The initialisation procedurecan be found in your owner’s manual.

ALEX BOOTRETFORDHONDAAlex Boot started hisworking life as a salesexecutive at Grantham

Honda at the tender age of 20 aftercompleting a business scholarship. After fiveyears he moved to Mansfield Honda beforemaking a move to Retford Honda.

Since his move to Retford Alex has thrived,working well with the established team ofPaul and Barry. Two days are never thesame with the opportunity to meet newpeople and welcome back returningcustomers.

Alex’s commitment has been rewarded witha promotion to the role of BusinessManager. Extra responsibility has not dilutedAlex’s passion to deliver the ultimatecustomer experience.

Outside of work Alex enjoys sport, in thepast playing rugby for his county. Injury hascurtailed his involvement in rugby with golfbeing his new passion, although by his ownadmission his game has scope forimprovement. 2016 will see anothersignificant change for Alex with his marriageto Rachel. We wish them a happy futuretogether.

JAKE POOLEVERTU HONDAGRANTHAMJake is one of our newestcolleagues at Vertu Honda,having joined in March of

this year as an apprentice salesadministrator for our bike dealership inGrantham. With daily guidance from NikkiPorter, a highly experienced salesadministrator, and day release at GranthamCollege, Jake is gaining new skills andenjoying his new role.

His passion for all things Honda, whether itbe two wheels or four, is evident from thefirst time you meet Jake. He sees hisposition at Grantham Honda as a bigopportunity with the scope to progressthrough the ranks at Vertu Honda.

Before joining Vertu Honda, Jake was a fulltime cyclist winning a couple of nationalevents in both mountain bike and cyclocrossdisciplines. He’s even competed for GreatBritain in the cyclocross world cup in theNetherlands. His daily mode of transport isnow a stunning Honda CR-Z !

NEIL RIDDELL NEWCASTLEHONDANeil has worked in themotor industry for 38 yearshaving left school to

become a technician. He then progressed tothe position of aftersales manager where heworked for 14 years.

He has worked with the Honda franchise for20 years and his current role is that of aservice advisor at our busy NewcastleHonda dealership.

In his own words Neil’s greatest part of thejob “is the relationship I have with a lot ofcustomers. Many have become friends andoften drop in for a chat and a coffee withgoodies for the lads”.

Neil’s relaxed and helpful attitude is a hitwith our customers, with any problemssolved quickly and without fuss. CustomerSatisfaction, CSI, is close to Neil’s heart andruns through the whole department.

Having lived in Newcastle all his life it comesas no surprise that he is a Newcastle Unitedfan. A passion for football sits alongside hisfamily with his wife Kim, son, daughter andgranddaughter Phoebe, who at just two isthe apple in her granddad’s eye.

DANNY BIRKETTDURHAM HONDADanny has worked withinthe Honda network sinceleaving school, startingwork at the Honda

dealership in Durham as an apprenticetechnician. Looking for a change he took onthe role of service advisor before beingpromoted to a position of divisional senioraftersales advisor. This saw Danny work atmany of our Vertu Honda dealerships.

In December 2014 Danny was promoted tothe position of service manager at DurhamHonda. His experience both as technician,and an advisor, gives him the perfect insightinto what constitutes a successful aftersalesdepartment. Customers are at the heart ofeverything Danny does. An efficient,effective, welcoming and friendly serviceevery time someone visits. His aim is to bethe number one ranked dealer in the UK forHonda Customer Satisfaction.

Outside of work one of Danny’s mainpassion has been a comprehensiverestoration of his beloved 1992 Rover MiniCooper. A task which he has just completed.

St Oswald’s Hospice sits in a quiet, leafypart of Gosforth. It was founded in theearly 1970's by Dorothy Jameson. In 1982,Dorothy's committee launched an appeal toraise £2 million to build and run a localhospice. North East people gave theirwhole-hearted support to the project andthe doors opened in July 1986.

Specialist care, including day care,outpatient clinics, an inpatient unit andcommunity outreach, is provided for adults,young people and children from across theNorth East.

Last year alone it cared for 2,024 patientsand their families.

St Oswald’s is neither an NHS nor a ‘private’unit. It is a self-financing, voluntaryorganisation. With annual running costs ofmore than £7.5 million it relies heavily onsupport from the community.

St Oswald’s annual raffle aims to raise over£40,000. It is traditionally drawn at theHospice’s Christmas market at the end ofNovember.

Colleagues from Doncaster Honda tookpart in this year’s Dragon Boat raceorganised by Doncaster Tourism. DragonBoat racing is an ancient Chinesetradition and the fastest growing wateractivity in Britain today. The event startedsix years ago, and now attracts over 30teams, raising money for local causes.This year the chosen charity was AuroraWellbeing, a local charity supporting menand women and their families who areaffected by cancer

Our team of 10 paddled the 30’ boatwith a drummer, Melissa Brown, at thefront, beating time and a helm at the tailsteering a straight course over the 200meter course.

Over 5000 people attended the eventwith Doncaster Honda coming a veryrespectable 5th. Well done guys !

A LOOK BACK IN TIME

The NXR750V, a full HRC race machine,faced stiff competition in the gruelling Paris-Dakar through the late 1980s but won out in1986 and 1987 in the hands of Cyril Neveu,in ’88 with Edi Orioli and finally in ’89 pilotedby Gilles Lalay. The road-going XRV650Africa Twin was produced between 1988-9by HRC in tribute to their efforts, and laidthe foundation of what would become alegendary machine.

In late 1989 the XRV750 Africa Twin waslaunched and quickly became an adventuretouring benchmark. It featured a 742cc, 6-valve liquid-cooled V-twin engine (producing45kW power and 62.7Nm torque), longtravel suspension and large fuel tank, chainfinal drive, 21-inch front wheel (wideningoff-road tyre choice) and dual front discbrakes. Revised twice and in production until2003 it remains a sought-after machinetoday, with good examples commandingpremium prices.
