Tapestry needle Sewing needle
Sewing thread 12 inches acrylic yarn 1-inch button
GaugeBefore felting: 14 sts = 4 inches;
9 rows = 4 1/2 inches
Special StitchTop stitch (top st): Holding yarn at
back of work, insert hook betweensts, pull yarn through to RS, inserthook around row directly above, yo,pull yarn through, through both lpson hook.
CLUTCHFlapRow 1: With black, ch 42, dc in 4th ch
from hook (first 3 chs count as firstdc) and in each ch across, turn.(40 dc)
Row 2: Ch 3, dc in each st across, turn.Row 3 (RS): To form edging, fold row
1 to back, working in starting ch onopposite side of row 1 and in sts oflast row at same time, ch 1, sc ineach st across, turn. Fasten off.
Row 4: Join winter white with sl st infirst st, ch 3, dc in each st across,turn.
Rows 544: Ch 3, dc in each st across,turn. At end of last row, fasten off.Clutch should measure 21 inchesfrom beg.
PocketRow 1: With winter white, ch 22, dc in
3rd ch from hook and in each chacross, turn. (20 dc)
Rows 29: Ch 3, dc in each st across,turn. At end of last row, fasten off.
Finishing1. Attach Pocket to WS of 13 rows
below edging centered with 10sts on either side. Using tapestryneedle, sew Pocket along 3 edges,leaving top edge open toward Flapedging.
2. Fold Clutch last row up and overpocket so that it is 11 rows belowblack edge to form Clutch. The rem11 rows are the Flap.
3. With RS tog, sew sides with winterwhite along the edges. Turn RS out.
4. For trim on Flap, with RS facingand 2 strands black, form 2 verticalrows of top st (see Special Stitch)6 sts from left edge on front of flap,across 11 rows to top of Flap, pullyarn to WS. Fasten off.
5. Sk next 4 sts, rep step 4.6. For front closure lp, with 4 strands of
black held tog, join with sl st in cen-ter of Flap at black edge, ch 8, sl stin next st. Fasten off.
FeltingUsing acrylic yarn, loosely baste the
Flap to body in order to help retainthe shape of the Flap while felting.
Place the Clutch in a pillowcase,which captures the loose fibers thatcome out of the wool during thefelting process; place pillowcasein washing machine. Put through2 hot-water wash cycles using nodetergent, do not rinse betweencycles. Monitor the felting processas the time may vary depending onthe desired firmness of the Clutch.Rinse in cold water. Let washer spinout some of water, take Clutch outof pillowcase and roll in a towel toabsorb more moisture.
Lay out on towel, adjust shape asneeded and let dry completely.
Sew button on front opposite frontclosure lp.
