• Entry / Exit
Pre-Robbery Safety
• Follow opening and closing procedures
• Notice area, inside and outside office
– Suspicious subjects, vehicles
– People watching the office
– Same vehicles driving by over and over
– Subjects in office looking at cameras, security,
office personnel and procedures Be a Good Witness!
Get a description, license plate and note the time!
Planning ahead for robberies
• Lessen appeal to robbers
– Clean, open view through
windows
– Obvious video camera,
monitors
– Greeter’s/Guard’s position
– Access to teller
drawers/TCD
Check surveillance, be familiar with
operation
Surveillance Problems
• Poor quality tapes
• Cameras trying to cover too
much area
• Clutter on counter
• Not familiar with equipment
• Witnesses reviewing photos
Digital Cameras
• Usually a better picture
• How are you going to get pictures to
law enforcement on scene?
• DON’T SHOW TO WITNESSES
• Periodically look at pictures at various
times of day-is there good coverage, is
there “washout”, is there clutter?
Most Common Disguise
Be Aware of Surroundings
• Most common disguise = hat + sunglasses
– Robbers believe brim of hat and glasses will
keep surveillance cameras from getting good
photo
• You work here, you know what is out of the
ordinary
Obviously out of the Ordinary

Obviously out of the Ordinary
Also out of the Ordinary
Be Aware of Surroundings
• Most robbers will conduct pre-robbery
surveillance
• Stay alert for suspicious individuals in your
branch not conducting any true banking
business
– Asking about accounts, but no ID
– Asking to use the restroom
– Asking for change
• Observe, get license plate, report
• Stay Calm
• Stay Observant
• Comply with the robber’s demands
• Call 911 and activate the alarm as soon as
you feel safe – the sooner the better
During the Robbery
• Call 911
• Activate the alarms
• Give robber any and all
security devices (dye
pack, tracker or bait bills)
• Stage your work area to
maximize your chance of
success
• Be confident and familiar
with security devices
If At All Possible:
During the Robbery
Dye/Tracker
• What are they?
• Do you have them?
• When do they activate?
• Are you comfortable with them?
• Place in bag or hand them with least
exposure
• Does it set off alarm?
• Give them out!
Bait Money
• What is it?
• Why is it useful?
• Does the robber know which is bait?
• Can you easily access the bait bills
and other security devices?
• Is bait with tracker/dye?
• Does it set off alarm?
• Give it out!
BAIT
BILLS
• Preferably not with
tracker or dye—will
get thrown out or
burn/be covered with
dye
• Can your institution
afford one bill?
• Record serial # and
year
During the Robbery
•Try to keep the note - Don’t handle it or any evidence
•If robber takes the note, remember exact wording
Empty both drawers
BOMB!
No Dye 15 seconds

Post Robbery
• Do you have a plan? Follow it.
– Does each employee have specific job after
robbery?
• Secure office then OBSERVE (4 Corner)!
• Call POLICE (911), then FBI (402-493-
8688), then supervisors
• Write down suspects’ description, vehicle
description, direction of travel, weapons…
• Stay calm. Be a good witness.
Stay Calm – Be a Good Witness
Witness Awareness
• Windows
– Great technology, use
them
– Sometimes better than
cameras
Law Enforcement View First Responders
• Last place they need to be is in the bank
• Set up out of sight
• Phone contact
• What is needed at scene
• False alarms are ok—activate as soon as
possible when you feel comfortable
Law Enforcement View Detective/Agents
• Identify witnesses – keep them separated
• Identify evidence left behind
• Surveillance photos
• FDIC number
• Bait bill numbers/tracking device numbers
• Audit of amount stolen
When asked why he robbed banks:
“Because that’s where the money is!”

Willie Sutton
FBI Mugshot

Pre-Opening Robberies • Very rare
• A lot of surveillance—be
aware of cars in parking
lot, strange actions in
bank
• Don’t short-cut opening
procedures
• BE AWARE OF YOUR
SURROUNDINGS
• Be aware: followed home
• Be aware: strangers at
door
• Be prepared
• Don’t panic
• Be observant
• Be safe
