It’s hard to believe that 125 years ago,
four brothers and sisters in Christ decided to
meet in Spring Hope, North Carolina in
December of 1889. In 1890, their group of
four grew to thirteen with a pastor, John A.
Bridges. First Baptist Church of Spring Hope
met inside an unused building in the down-
town area. The members sat on makeshift
pews made out of wooden planks set on top
of nail kegs. It wasn’t long before First Baptist
began meeting on Walnut Street at a one-
room schoolhouse. In 1895, the church
decided to buy property at 111 N. Walnut
Street. The present sanctuary was built between 1909 to 1910 with electricity, a
central heating system, and the impressive stained-glass windows we still see
today.
Of course, there is more to 125 years than just a building. The church is the
people who gather to worship each Sunday. The Women’s Missionary Union
(WMU) held various bake sales and took the time to make quilts by hand in order
to raise funds for missionaries. Today, the Women on Mission (WOM) continue to
live the legacy by raising awareness of missions by leading our church in collecting
various items throughout the year. Our church has supported missionaries through
the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and Annie Armstrong Easter Offering, as well as
the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s Global Missions Offering. There’s no telling
how many cans of food we have collected for the Baptist Children’s Home in
Kinston, or Faith Christian Ministries, which was
started a few years ago in Spring Hope. Our
church as reached out to our community by
participating in Operation InAsMuch, hosting
Thanksgiving meals, and supporting ministries at
Green Tree Apartments in Spring Hope. Children
and teens have shared Christ’s love with others
through puppet ministries, M-Fuge mission trips,
and Children’s Mission Days. Our church has
focused on many different ways to help people
in need.
After celebrating 125 years, the question
we need to ask is, “What do we do now?” It’s
easy to reminisce about the good ol’ days. Our
church has plenty of good memories from way
back when. Our stories from yesterday are what have made us become
today. At the same time, I believe God continues to move us forward. While
remembering our past, we need to embrace our future. Wherever God is, there is
always a future. May we be prayerfully seeking ways of continuing ministry for
another 125 years as First Baptist Church of Spring Hope. Looking forward to
celebrating our rich history, as well as moving forward, on Sunday, October 19.
In Christ, Kevin
