PFAZE FOCUS ON...FRANCHON LINDSAY

If you stop and think a minute, you'll realize that every CivilService employee who has come to GSU in the past two years shouldknow one name - Franchon Lindsay. Fran has placed over 2,000permanent and temporary GSUers. As Personnel Officer I, she isresponsible for the testing and placement of each applicant whostops in at the first floor office seeking a GSU position. Aftertwo years and testing 1,674 applicants, Fran says she loves it andhas plans to become more skilled in all areas of the personnelmanagement field. She also believes the Personnel Office is theideal place to be since "the atmosphere is nice and the people aregreat." Her avocation is helping others, and the 27-year-old doesjust that whenever she can in screening applicants. Noting thatall persons don't test well, Fr\ says there are times when anapplicant may have an extraordinary experiential background butdoes not make a qualifying score on the appropriate exam. It'stimes like those when she has to use her personnel counselingability to steer thei.. in another direction, toward a position for

which they qualify and can still derive employment satisfaction. She never passes up a chance tosuggest enrolling at GSU as a means to a good job. Of course, she has to be knowledgeable aboutall aspects of the GSU personnel office to answer questions about pay administration, classification and procedure.

On the road to becoming an expert personnel specialist, Fran is a psychology student at PrairieState. She plans to continue her studies at GSU next year. Actually a whiz with numbers, shebegan her early college education as a math major at Illinois State University and thinks business administration is an important part of personnel management.

With a Park Forest home full of handmade wooden furniture, she enjoys the benefits of her husbandHenry's hobby - woodworking. A 13-year employee with Ford Motor Company, he has made everythingfrom their bedroom furniture to the shadowbox which mirrors their den furnishings in the basement,Their six-year-old son Tione is already trying to help. An intense reader of fiction, Fran alsolikes to bowl in the winter and describes herself as "the best firstbaseperson at the stretch"in the summer. A poet at heart, she writes of children and peace and life. One poem, writteneight years ago, included "In each day I try/Try to find a way/To help the wondering roamingminds/Of children gone astray." Her help does not always go unappreciated. Fran has receivednotes, cards and calls thanking her from many who have gone through her office. She adds witha smile, "But I have yet to receive flowers." Among us at GSU there are those who think shedeserves them.
