Welcome Letter

Welcome to Fayetteville ATCT/TRACON! We are glad to have you join our air traffic

control team. Here you will have an opportunity to work with an outstanding team of

professionals that help make us a great place to work and develop your skills. Your

knowledge, abilities and positive attitude made you a highly regarded addition to our team,

and I am certain that you will have a positive impact on our future.

All of us want to make your tenure at Fayetteville as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.

Please feel free to ask any questions and express your thoughts and ideas to the staff and

members of your training team. Our aim is to create an informal atmosphere and involve

everyone in the process of making our facility an exceptional place to work.

Fayetteville ATCT/TRACON Today

Fayetteville ATCT/TRACON is a 24 hour, Level 7, “up/down” facility with an annual traffic

count of 200,000 operations. There are twelve operational positions in the facility, four in the

Control Tower and eight in the TRACON. Fayetteville airspace encompasses approximately

4,800 square miles, contains four air traffic control towers, and approach control service for

thirteen airports with instrument approaches. The airspace also includes Fort Bragg, the

largest Army installation and Airborne facility in the world, a Restricted Area and four

Military Operation Areas (MOAs)

The Fayetteville leadership team consists of an Air Traffic Manager, Administrative Assistant,

three Front Line Managers, Support Specialist and a Raytheon Training Specialist. The

current Certified Professional Controller (CPC) staffing range is 20 to 24 Controllers, not

including Developmental Controllers in training.

Fayetteville ATCT/TRACON Leadership Team

A little about us, and we look forward to getting to know you!

Ben Grimes, Air Traffic Manager

Ben was born in North Carolina and began his air traffic control

career in 1966 at Shaw AFB, SC. He joined the FAA in 1975

and worked as a controller in Wilmington, NC (ILM);

Montgomery, AL (MGM); San Juan, PR (SJU); San Juan

CERAP, PR (ZSU); Charlotte, NC (CLT) and also worked in

Saudi Arabia for 3 years as an air traffic control instructor.

Prior to coming to Fayetteville, NC (FAY), Ben served as an

Air Traffic Manager at King Salmon, AK (AKN); Molokai, HI

(MKK); St. Croix, USVI (STX); St. Thomas, USVI (STT) and

as a Staff Specialist at FAA Headquarters in Washington, DC.

When not on the job, Ben enjoys spending time with family and friends, boating, singing,

playing the guitar and NASCAR racing.

Melinda Braddy, Administrative Assistant

Melinda was born in Georgia and began her federal

government career in 1984 with the Veterans Administration

in Atlanta, GA. She also worked with the Federal Probation

Service and National Weather Service in Greenville, SC.

Melinda began her FAA career in 1987 at the Regional Office

in Atlanta, GA and came to Fayetteville ATCT/TRACON as

Administrative Assistant in 1997.

When not taking care of the facility, Melinda’s interests

include travelling in her RV, motorcycle riding and her two

grandchildren.

Lyndon Morrison, Front Line Manager

Lyndon Morrison (Mo) was born in Maxton, NC. Mo

started his government career in 1983 in the US Army

and served 12 years. His air traffic career began in

1986 in Fort Rucker, AL with stints at Fort Bragg, NC

and Riyadh, Dhahran, and Al Hofuf in Saudi Arabia.

After leaving the military he was employed by the

Dept of the Army on Ft Bragg where he continued his

air traffic career. Mo joined the FAA in 1998 as a

controller and became a Front Line Manager in 2006,

all at Fayetteville, NC.

When not managing the operation, he enjoys all sports

and often can be seen running, riding his bicycle, and

does not mind an occasional pickup game of

basketball (GO BLUE DEVILS!!!). He loves to ride his motorcycle and restore vintage cars.

Carol Raiford, Front Line Manager

Carol was born in Florida and began her FAA career in 1982 in

Nashville, TN (BNA). She has worked as an Air Traffic

Controller at Fulton County, GA (FTY); Chattanooga, TN

(CHA); Jacksonville, FL (JAX); and also worked as a flight

watch specialist at Miami AIFSS. Since 2004, Carol has served

as a FLM at Fayetteville ATCT/TRACON.

Carol’s leisure time is often spent with family and friends. She

also enjoys working with children. Her volunteer work includes

the girl scouts; Special Olympics; church youth activities; and

other community services. Carol believes children are our

future, and how important it is to invest time in their

development. One of Carol’s favorite sayings: “Teachers open

the door. You enter by yourself.” Chinese Proverb.

Gerard Tzanetatos, Front Line Manager

Gerard is originally from Long Island, NY and joined

the FAA in 1990 as an air traffic assistant at New York

Center and has held air traffic controller positions at

New York Center (ZNY) and Morristown Tower, NJ

(MMU). Gerard became a Front Line Manager at

Morristown in 2004 before transferring to Fayetteville in

2008.

When not on the job, Gerard enjoys spending time with

the family, Civil War Reenacting and tinkering around

the house.

Richard Cartwright, Training Specialist, Raytheon

Richard was born in Alabama and served in the USAF

as an air traffic controller from 1968 thru 1975 at

Sewart AFB, TN; Kimpo AB, Seoul, Korea; Kunsan

AB, Korea; Craig AFB, AL; and Seymour Johnson

AFB, NC.

He joined the FAA in 1975 right here at Fayetteville

ATCT/TRACON, and also worked as a controller at

Columbia, SC (CAE); Memphis, TN (MEM); and

Charleston, SC (CHS). Richard then continued his

career as an air traffic controller for the DOD at

Simmons AAF, NC from 1985 thru 2002, the last 12 years as a supervisor.

After retirement from the FAA, Richard joined Raytheon Technical Services here at

Fayetteville as a classroom and simulator training instructor. Richard’s primary responsibility

is to prepare trainees for operational training. He takes a great deal of personal pride and

satisfaction knowing he has been entrusted with providing the initial training that is necessary

for your success here at Fayetteville.

Richard’s interests include the arts; music; theater; reading/writing poetry; antiques (cars,

furniture, art work etc.) and motorcycle riding.

Pete Gilmore, Support Specialist

Pete was born in France and began his air traffic

control career with the USAF in 1979 at Royal AF

Lakenheath, England. He also worked at Cannon

AFB, NM; Seymour Johnson AFB, NC; Seattle

ARTCC, WA; Luke AFB, AZ; Osan AB, Korea;

Beale AFB, CA; and Prince Sultan AB, Saudi

Arabia.

Pete joined the FAA in 2000 as an air traffic

controller at Fayetteville ATCT/TRACON and

currently serves as a support specialist and facility

training administrator.

Pete’s variety of ATC experience, having held a

facility rating in almost every type of air traffic

control facility including GCA; RAPCON and mobile RAPCON; Tower and Mobile Tower;

TRACON; and ARTCC, make him a valuable team member.

When not on the job, Pete enjoys sports and spending time with his son.

Policies

Reporting for Duty

All new employees report for duty at 8:00am on their first day.

Hours of Duty

While in classroom training, hours of duty are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. After classroom

training is completed, your supervisor will brief you on specific policies and new hours of

duty.

Parking

Parking is permitted in the gated facility parking lot in front of the tower. An access card is

required for entry and will be issued by the facility.

Security

Security is maintained by local law enforcement. All employees are required to wear their

FAA ID badge while on facility premises. The badge must be clearly worn and displayed in

accordance with regulations. Employees are expected to report any unidentified, unknown, or

suspicious persons observed on FAY ATCT/TRACON premises.

Building Access

An access card is needed for all facility exterior doors and will be the same card issued for

entry to the parking lot.

Guests and Visitors

Employees may have family members and guests visit the facility after obtaining approval

from management. The approval process and log in procedures are located in our local

directives and will be part of your initial training.

Cell Phones

Cell phones are not allowed in operation areas, but are permitted in other areas of the facility.
