Media Release from NHS Education for Scotland
Date: 26 May, 2015
People Connect: Social Network and online
discussion channel for Health and Social Care Staff
Health and social care integration and the transition to new models of person-centred,
partnership-based care make it more important than ever to connect people across disciplines
and organisations so that they can communicate and collaborate effectively. The Quality and
Efficiency Support Team in Scottish Government has funded NHS Education for Scotland
Knowledge Services and the Quality Improvement Hub jointly to develop a new tool, People
Connect, to meet this need. People Connect provides a secure, easily accessible place where
people across Scotland’s health and social care can network, make new connections, and
share experience and expertise.
People Connect allows health and social care staff to:
join using their Knowledge Network ATHENS account
access the People Connect social directory
search for people who share professional interests
make connections with colleagues working in related areas
email individuals or groups with similar interests
use its latest function: online discussion
A particularly innovative feature is the online mentoring tool, enabling mentees to make contact
with qualified mentors that meet their needs. People Connect has been designed as a one-
stop-shop which builds in links to existing social networks. This allows users to connect their
LinkedIn and Twitter accounts and their Knowledge Network Communities of Practice. People
Connect uses simple privacy settings allowing users to share as much, or as little, profile
information as they would like.
Health and social care staff are using People Connect to make contact with hundreds of
colleagues working in quality improvement, leadership, patient safety, mental health and many
other priorities, share information and updates, ask questions, and participate in discussion
about hot topics.
Since June 2014, during the beta-testing phase, over 1000 people have joined People
Connect with this number growing steadily. We invite you to try the service out for yourself
today and try out our newly developed discussion function with colleagues.
Go to www.peopleconnect.scot.nhs.uk to join and start connecting.
