Dear People of Saint Anne,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself—my name is Fr. Rodolfo G. Ramirez—your new associate pastor. I am the sixth of eleven children; I have five brothers and five sisters. I was born in a small farming community in the center of Mexico in the state of Aguascalientes. In case you are wondering where that is, Aguascalientes is located between the states of Zacatecas and Jalisco; the closest most well-known city is Guadalajara.

I was blessed being born into a very religious family; my mother is a very faithful woman from whom I learned my first prayers. I still remember some of them and, very often, I say them when I feel down or miss my family. Growing up, I went to church every Sunday with my parents and my brothers and sisters, something I still like to do when I visit them.

In May 2002, I was ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal Francis George. Since then, I have served in different parishes in the Archdiocese. And now, I am so excited to finally be here among you. Even though I was named your new associate pastor in May 2019, it is now that I begin my ministry here. I want to thank Cardinal Cupich and the Arch-diocesan placement board for their trust and confidence in assigning me here. I also want to thank Fr. Bernie for seeking me out and inviting me to Saint Anne. I have enjoyed working with him in the past, and I have learned a great deal about how to minister and serve the people entrusted to our spiritual care. In coming here, I have great confidence that I will still learn so much from him. I am grateful to call Fr. Bernie, not only a brother priest but also a great friend and mentor. Even though I have not worked with Fr. Joji yet, I have come to know and respect him as a brother priest. I am blessed to have the opportunity to be here

among you and to serve and minister together with both of them.

I have been on sabbatical for the last six months. Being able to take a sabbatical was such a wonderful experience. It has been a great opportunity for a spiritual renewal and time to pray and relax. The policy of the Archdiocese is that in taking a sabbatical, one must divide it into three main parts—spiritual renewal, some ongoing formation/learning experience and some time for rest. As part of my spiritual renewal, I decided to partake in the 30-day retreat (the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola). I was blessed to do that in St. Ignatius’ native place in Northern Spain. After the retreat, I hiked the 500 miles from Camino de Santiago from St. Jean Pied du Port (southern France) to Santiago de Compostela. I hope that now that I’m here together with Fr. Joji, Fr. Bernie may be able to take a well-deserved and long-awaited sabbatical.

For my ongoing formation/learning experience, I spent 7 weeks with the Franciscan community of Mission San Solano in southern Arizona. Their main ministry is serving the Tohono O’odham Nation (the largest Indian reservation in the country). Then, I went to Mexico to be with my family for Christmas, something I have not done in a very long time. In the future, I’ll be sharing more with you about this wonderful and life-changing experience.

I am so looking forward to come to know you and for you to know me. I have heard only good things about this wonderful faith community. I hope and pray that our years together will be marked by a deep friendship and service for the sake of the Gospel.

KAIROS 2020—FEBRUARY 27TH-MARCH 1ST KAIROS Retreats are designed to provide an atmosphere and environment for adolescents that are conducive to the kind of reflection and self-examination that can result in movement toward a deeper relationship with Christ. Kairos is a 3 1/2 day retreat for high school juniors and seniors that explores relationships within the lives of adolescents. Participants are invited to actually experience God in a real and tangible way through a series of well-orchestrated talks that expose the retreatants to the fullness of the Christian life. The goal is to help retreatants learn ways to establish a strong “friendship” with God and to integrate that into their day-to-day life.

PATHS LARGE GROUP PRESENTATION 23 Years in Prison For a Crime He Didn’t Commit

On Sunday, January 12th, Paths will host Jacques Rivera as its keynote speaker for our first and second year students and parents. Mr. Rivera spent 23 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. He was released from prison due to the work of a lawyer at Northwestern University’s Center for Wrongful Convictions on October 4th, 2011. In the course of his incarceration, Mr. Rivera experienced a profound religious conversion that offered him hope in a place where hope simply doesn’t have much room—a maximum security prison.

Our presentation has much relevance for our Confirmation candidates who are seeking to follow Jesus, another man who was falsely imprisoned but who was never released from prison. He was executed on a cross by the Romans. In Jesus’ trial, as in Jacques’, witnesses came forward to lie about the actions of Jesus that eventually brought about his imprisonment and death. Yet, in both of these men’s lives, redemption and forgiveness were thematic. In the end, love prevailed.

FAITH IN ACTION It is with heartfelt gratitude that we express our sincere thanks to Judy Almdale for her participation in the Ministry of Care. For the past 18 years, every Sunday morning, Judy led a Communion Service for the residents of the Prairie View Building at The Garlands of Barrington. Last Sunday, Judy stepped down from this role.

As a trained Minister of Care by the Archdiocese of Chicago, Judy brought the valuable gift of the true presence of Christ in the consecrated Eucharist to

residents who are unable to attend Mass. These residents would have been separated from Communion and our community. During this time, many of the residents formed a long-term relationship with Judy and this led to a deeper prayer life. In her Communion services, Judy followed the outline of the Mass with a penitential rite, Sunday gospel and short reflection, followed by the Our Father and Rite of Communion. We are inspired by Judy’s faithful devotion to the Eucharist and for providing “church time” to residents whose love for God has no bounds. Judy is a fantastic ambassador for our parish and a great example of Faith in Action. Many thanks to Judy for her service!

RECYCLE OLD/OBSOLETE CELL PHONES DURING JANUARY To help the Elgin Community Crisis Center convert old phones into cash and offset costs in their shelter, which houses victims of domestic violence from surrounding communities, and keep cell phones out of landfills where they pose an environmental threat, Faithjustice has set up baskets in the Gathering Space to recycle phones with batteries. Do not include accessories or adaptors and, if able, delete all phone numbers. The phones will be turned over to Shelter Alliance to refurbish, resell or recycle. All proceeds from this effort benefit the Elgin Community Crisis Center. The more current the phone, the better! Old cell phones are disassembled and parts are salvaged using eco-friendly methods.

Shelter Alliance (SA) is a program of GRC Wireless Recycling, www.grcrecycling.com, a private sector company dedicated exclusively to socially responsible cell phone recycling. With over 2,000 active participants in 50 states, Canada and Puerto Rico, Shelter Alliance is the largest cell phone recycling program in the U.S. Shelter Alliance participants have earned over $4,000,000.00 since 2001. Shelter Alliance was established to offer local community organizations a viable, profitable fundraising option. A big thank you to all who contributed to the 2019 Sharing Tree! Through your donations, we were able to provide necessities and gifts to three organizations with many needs.

SUNDAY HOSPITALITY The Saint Anne Women’s Club is pleased to continue coordinating Sunday hospitality. On Sunday, January 12th, volunteers from Hope Ministries will host hospitality in the Gathering Space after the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Masses. Hope Ministries is an outreach of the Saint Anne Catholic Community that provides emergency assistance to those individuals and families in our area facing crisis, regardless of faith. Through timely intervention, our ministry seeks to restore hope, providing a catalyst for change and return to self-sufficiency.

By Clem Aseron Sharing the Living Story

It is appropriate that we end the season consisting of Christmas, Holy Family, Mary, Mother of God and The Epiphany with the celebration of The Baptism of the Lord. The Lectionary closes that season of Christmas (the birth, infancy and youth) by recalling the baptism of Jesus which also signals the start of his public ministry. Over the next six Sundays of winter Ordinary Time, except for next Sunday, we will read from Matthew’s stories about Jesus’ proclamation of the kingdom until Ash Wednesday, on February 26th. Recall that since Advent, we have been delving into Matthew’s gospel. From here on, the Lectionary beckons us to examine the ways of discipleship.

In the first of four Servant Songs, the author(s) of the Book of Isaiah speak(s) of Israel as the servant whom God has chosen, in whom God delights, upon whom God has sent God’s spirit to bring justice to the nations (42:1). Note that Isaiah is very clear: speaking with the voice of a prophet, he says to The Chosen (the Israelites) that Israel is to be light for the nations (v.6, note the plural of the word nation), that is, to be light for those outside itself – in other words, to the Gentiles, to the pagans. At vv.2-4, it is with gentleness, patience, much solicitude, but with firmness, God’s servant will teach and bring forth justice on the earth , that is, for all its inhabitants! (From a much later vantage point, the Christian community, looking backward, identified this servant as The Christ.) At vv. 6 and 7, God reminds the servant, in precise terms, that he is to liberate all peoples from all inequities. The metaphor in v. 7, to open the eyes o f the blind , to

bring out those who live in darkness, means to be in God’s light, to be in God’s justice, to have no disparity; it is to have right relationship; it is to be righteous; it is to be in covenant; it is to be healed; it is to have shalom—God’s abundant, abiding peace (today’s psalm refrain). Who? All peoples.

The second reading is also from Luke; recall that in his gospel, Luke sounds the unmistakable theme that salvation is for all humankind. He does no less in his second book, the Acts of the Apostles, where he continues this emphasis in his stories about the early post-resurrection communities. The story this Sunday (maybe read all of chapter 10, it’s short) describes Peter’s astonishing entry into the house of a pagan—by which act culture says Peter would be made unclean—to declare to the assembled gentiles that he now understands that salvation is also for them! (vv.34, 35) The good news is: The Christ comes to preach shalom—deep, abiding peace—not only to the Israelites, but to all, for he is Lord of all (v.36); God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and with power and he went about doing good and healing all (shades of Isaiah!). The end of the chapter clinches it: after witnessing the pouring out of the Spirit on the gentiles, Peter goes on to baptize not only Cornelius, but all his gentile household and guests (vv.44-48) to the utter astonishment of the circum-cised believers (v.45).

Recall the passages from Matthew used in the lectionary for the Christmas season. Joseph had intended to quietly divorce his betrothed, Mary, when God urged him to claim Jesus as his own son, thereby bestowing legitimacy on Jesus. Last week,

Sharing the Living Story

we heard that no sooner had people (The Chosen) learned his name, Emmanuel, (God with us) than he is shown being paid homage by the magi, pagan people from beyond the regions of Israel (no local shepherds in Matthew!).

Whether the original reader is a Jewish Christian or a Gentile Christian, Matthewʹs gospel and Luke’s Acts of the Apostles reminds the in-group (The Chosen) that they cannot be exclusive and assures the out-group (the gentiles) that they are included.

Once again, the cultural background of first century Palestine opens vistas for our understanding. Recall Joseph’s actions at Mt. 1:19-24: public acknowledgment of fatherhood is the best legiti-mation for a child to have as it assures it a position in the social order, making it possible for the child to move in an acceptable manner within that order. But beyond Joseph, the Mediterranean sensibility is astounded by an ultimate ascribed honor given to Jesus because it is God who is overheard making the claim, this is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; what better patron than God can one have? Those who hear this astounding claim are those who came to be baptized by John: Jerusalem, [in fact] all Judea, [the old Southern Kingdom] the whole region around the Jordan [the Jordan extends

northward up to the Sea of Galilee, encompassing the old Northern Kingdom] (v.5).

Recall that in this culture, all claim to honor is immediately challenged to see if that status can be diminished by shaming. In the beginning of the very next chapter (4), Jesus passes this test by besting The Adversary, thereby increasing his honor. Thus begins Jesus’ ministry in Galilee: he is legitimated in the culture by Joseph; he is ascribed highest honor by God; he comes to bring abiding peace to all peoples; and he invites us to join him as disciples. As we shall see in the gospel pericopes until Lent, the Lectionary will focus on Matthew’s perspective about what the criteria are for those who wish to answer the call of the Baptist: Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

(2) Last week, we celebrated the Epiphany, the manifestation of the Lord; today there is a something of that at the end of the Matthew pericope: This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.

Sacraments We believe that the celebration of the sacraments ranks among the most important gifts that we have. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at 847.382.2148.

Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance into our faith community.

• Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child

• Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

• Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the Parish Office at 847.382.5300.

Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the Parish Office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage.

First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at 847.620.3067.

Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at 847.620.3072.

Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment.

Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call the Parish Office at 847.382.5300 for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
