A state of the art replacement for the old 1814 Grangegorman Mental Health facility in Ireland. Created as a non-orthogonal arrangement of single, two and three storey blocks around two central courtyards. To reinforce contemporary design, the brick detailing was continued to the underside of large, exposed soffit areas using Fastwall® panels.

The extension and refurbishment of Sainsbury’s East Kilbride store was part of a major expansion plan by one of the leading UK supermarket chains. ADF Architects met the challenge of meeting a very tight 30 week build and refit deadline with no store closure.

Due to ease of installation, they decided to use the Ibstock Kevington Fastwall®

system to deliver this project. Prefabricated off-site, the brick slip panels finished with mortar have the full appearance of traditional brickwork. The Fastwall®

panels enabled the external cladding to be completed in two weeks without the requirement for scaffolding as a scissor lift was sufficient.

London’s East End artist, Alex Chinneck has gained a reputation for his sculpturally complex remodelling of derelict buildings. Alex chose to use Fastwall® on this project due to it’s simplicity, speed and versatility of design.

With guidance from Smith and Wallwork Engineers, a unique effect was created on this derelict 3 storey house in Margate by replacing the original brick frontage with a new ‘slipped’ façade, using Fastwall® panels on a semi-rigid GRP substrate.

FASTWALL® INSTALLATION GUIDANCE

Ensure panels are the correct way up. The ‘lip’ should be uppermost for the next course of panels to sit against once sealant has been applied.

A B

Double battens at movement joint positions

Lip uppermost

Movement joint

Fastwall panels are best erected from bottom left to top right, starting from a corner or abutment to traditional brickwork. Keep panels to line and level.

Sealant at receiving edges

Fastwall panels are secured to the battens (or rails) using the recommended fixing points. (Battens or rails are not necessary if fixing to existing masonry or concrete). For detailed drawings and fixing guidance for various wall constructions, please contact your local Design Advisors on 0844 800 4576.

Once a panel is in position apply sealant along the receiving edges before placement of the next panel.

Movement joints should be incorporated at 6 metre centres (horizontally and vertically) and below window sills, above plinths and, if necessary, internal corners.

Once all panels are fixed into position the wall is ready for mortar pointing.

Avoid part-pointing panels to maintain mortar colour consistency.

It is recommended to point the panels in entirety after placement to avoid potential mortar colour difference at panel joints.

Easipoint Fastwall Historic is an easy to apply gun injection mortar, however sand/cement mortar can be used to match adjacent, traditionally built brickwork.
