FAST TRACK TRAINING TO BECOMING A DUAL QUALIFIED SOLICITOR OF ENGLAND AND WALES

The Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS) came into force on 1 September 2010, replacing the previous regime, the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT) exams.
The QLTS is a transfer scheme which provides an opportunity for international lawyers to qualify as solicitors in England and Wales.
The scheme is administered by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), the regulatory body of the Law Society of England and Wales.
Who is eligible to take the QLTS assessments?To be eligible to apply to take the QLTS assessments, you must be:
• Aqualifiedlawyerwithinarecognised jurisdiction;or • AqualifiedlawyerwithintheEU/EEA;or • AbarristerwithinEnglandandWales;or • AScottishsolicitor/advocate;or • AnIrishSolicitor/advocate
Before taking the assessmentsENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
BeforeapplyingtosittheQLTSassessmentscandidateswillberequiredtodemonstratethattheymeettheSRA’sEnglishlanguagerequirements.
TheSRAhassetitsEnglishlanguagerequirementatLevelC2orMasterylevelinlinewiththeCommonEuropeanFrameworkofReference(CEFR).
CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY
BeforeyoucansittheQLTSassessmentsyoumusthavebeenissuedwithaCertificateofEligibility,issuedbytheSRA.
Are there any exemptions to the assessments?EXEMPTIONS FOR LPC GRADUATES
TheSRAcangrantexemptionfromtheMCTassessmenttoapplicantswhohavepassedtheLPC.ThisdoesnotapplytoOSCE.
EXEMPTIONS FOR INTRA-UK APPLICANTS, IRISH SOLICITORS, AND EEA LAWYERS
ScottishandIrishsolicitorsaswellasfully-qualifiedbarristersofEnglandandWalesareexemptfromsomeelementsoftheMCT.
Is there a need for training?Absolutely,thereareonlythreeattemptsallowedateachofthethreepartsoftheQLTSduringthefive-yearvalidityofyourofeligibility.Further,theQLTSassessmentorganisationarenotauthorisedtoprovidetrainingfortheassessments.CLT’sreputationasoneofthemainlegaltrainingproviders,guaranteesthatyouwillbeinsafehandstocoverallofyourQLTStrainingneeds.

From a recognised jurisdiction
Satisfy the English Language requirement
Apply to SRA for Certificate of
Eligibility
Check whether you are exempt from any parts of the QLTS assessments (certain exemptions are only available for the MCT at present)
Begin QLTS assessment preparation with CLT
Register for the QLTS assessments with Kaplan QLTS
Pass ALL required parts of the QLTS assessments
within the five year time frame
Apply to be admitted as a Solicitor of England and Wales
The QLTS Assessments Process
Part One - Multiple Choice Test (MCT)TheMCTconsistsof180questions,tobeansweredoverathreehourperiod.
EachquestionisbaseduponanareawhichwilltestthecandidateuponPartAoftheSolicitorsRegulationAuthority(SRA)DayOneOutcomesnamely:solicitors’accounts,professionalconduct,financialregulation,propertyandprobate,litigation,businesslawandpractice,contractandtort,theEnglishlegalsystem,incorporatingequitablerights,humanrightsandEUlaw.Thisassessment isexpectedtobeofthreehoursduration.
Part Two - Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)TheOSCEexaminesOutcomesC,DandFoftheSRA’sDayOneOutcomes.Candidatesareexaminedinthe3practiceareasof:
Business |PropertyandProbate|CivilandCriminalLitigation.
Ineachofthesepracticeareascandidatesdoeachofthefollowingexercisesonce:
Clientinterviewandcompletionofattendancenote/caseanalysis|Advocacy/oralpresentation| Legalresearch|Legalwriting|Legaldrafting.
Intotalthereforecandidatesundertake15assessedexercises:5inBusiness,5inPropertyandProbate,and5inCivilandCriminalLitigation.
