2 California Notes – vs. Colorado (Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018)

Sideline Stories• Justin Wilcox’s father, Dave Wilcox, is a Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker who played for the San Francisco 49ers from 1964-

74. Justin’s uncle, John (Philadelphia Eagles, 1960), and brother, Josh (New Orleans Saints, 1998-99), also played in the NFL. • Beau Baldwin was a player/coach in a semi-pro football league in Sweden before beginning his full-time coaching career. • Tim DeRuyter served seven years of active duty with the Air Force after his graduation from the academy in 1985.• The family of Burl Toler III has a long legacy at Cal. His father, Burl Toler Jr., was a four-year letterwinner as a linebacker for the

Bears from 1974-77. His mother, Susan, is a Cal graduate, as are his brother, Cameron, and sisters, Pita and Laureina. Cameron was a member of the Cal football program from 2004-07, while Pita and Laureina were on the Cal track and field team. Pita currently works as a member of the Cal Athletic Development staff. In addition, his grandfather, the late Burl Toler Sr., played on the legendary 1951 San Francisco team and later became the first African-American official in the NFL before spending 25 seasons in the role from 1965-89.

• Wilcox had his student-athletes read The Traveler’s Gift last spring. The book is about lessons in life that Wilcox wants the student-athletes to incorporate on the football field and their everyday lives.

• Ross Bowers’ father, John, was an assistant head coach/recruiting coordinator/outside linebackers coach for the football program at James Madison, while his mother, Joanne, was the head women’s gymnastics coach at Washington. Both left their positions to move to the Bay Area to be closer to Ross. John is now a prep coach at Clayton Valley Charter High School while Joanne is the head women’s gymnastics coach at San Jose State.

• Former Cal football student-athletes Ron Coccimiglio (1976-80) and Tarik Glenn (1993-96) both currently work with the program helping current football student-athletes with life skills and career development through a program called Life After Ball. Coccimiglio serves as the director of career development, while Glenn is a student-athlete development advisor.

• Cal football uses wearable technology GPS units by Catapult, the high-tech methodology that several Golden Bear teams use to improve their performance and reduce risk of injury during practices and games.

• Jordan Kunaszyk and other Cal student-athletes visited the impoverished Mexican town of Puerto Peñasco in January of 2018 and worked with a non-profit organization called “Steps of Love” to put up a foundation for a wall that would surround a garden for kids so they would have fresh produce. They also painted a house and the outside of a church building, and they helped a family put up dry wall in their kitchen.

• Ashtyn Davis also competed on the track & field team through the end of his collegiate eligibility in the sport in the spring of 2018, earning four All-American honors while winning the Pac-12 title in the 110-meter hurdles as a 2017 junior and back-to-back MPSF Championships in the 60-meter hurdles in his 2016 sophomore and junior seasons.

• Malik McMorris (track & field), Brandon McIlwain (baseball) and Branden Smith (track & field) are also multi-sport student-athletes. McMorris found his source of inspiration to succeed athletically and academically in his mother who passed away from breast cancer when he was in high school.

• Kanawai Noa and Semisi Uluave are natives of Hawaii and attended Punahou High School in Honolulu. The two have played football together and been close friends since the seventh grade. Uluave also hopes to become a pilot.

• Collin Moore and Michael Saffell are members of the on-campus organization The Sports Business Group, which has worked with Cal Athletics in the fan experience aspect of football games, and is currently helping the Oakland Athletics and San Jose Earthquakes in the same area.

• Jaylinn Hawkins spent the summer serving as a peer advisor, helping the newest Cal student-athletes get adjusted to their new lives as Golden Bears.

• Biaggio Ali Walsh’s grandfather is boxing legend Muhammad Ali. The two were very close. Ali Walsh hopes to become an actor or a director.

• Six Cal players list international hometowns – Steven Coutts (Brisbane, Australia), Hiroaki Endo (Tokyo, Japan), Jasper Friis (Starnberg, Germany), Siulagisipai Fuimaono (Okinawa, Japan), Gabe Siemieniec (Caledon, Ontario, Canada) and Lone Toailoa (Auckland, New Zealand).

• Endo first came to Cal as a student video assistant until an opportunity to join the roster opened up. • Football operations assistant Bud “Dog” Turner celebrates his 49th season with Cal football in 2018 and likes to say that he is

“halfway through his career”. • Patrick Mekari’s parents fled from the Middle East in the 1970’s. His mother’s side of the family left Iran during the country’s

revolution, while his father, his mother and four siblings including his brother and former Cal defensive lineman Tony Mekari left during the country’s civil war and arrived as immigrants in Foster City, Calif., before moving to Southern California.

• Alex Netherda’s family home was burned down during the 2017 North Bay fires and is in the process of being rebuilt. • Defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander (@GAlexander21) has tweeted over 104,000 times.• Hunter Abel wants to be a foreign ambassador or state senator.• Moe Ways and Ian Bunting are graduate transfers who came to Cal from Michigan.• Poutasi Poutasi is interested in being a counselor, potentially a prison therapist.

Shut-Down Defense• Cal has held its last four opponents to 100 yards or less rushing (90.5 avg),

including a season-low 79 yards at Washington State, and have held five opponents to 100 yards or less rushing this season for the first time since 2010. The last time Cal held four consecutive opponents to less than 100 yards rushing came in 2004 and that squad did it nine times total.

• Cal’s defense has held its opponents to under 300 yards of total offense five times including a season-low 241 total yards against Oregon State – the lowest ever under head coach Justin Wilcox and the least by a Cal defense since giving up 224 against Washington State in 2011.

• Cal has held its last four opponents to fewer than 20 points (50 total) for the first time since five consecutive opponents under 20 points spanning the final three games of 2008 and first two of 2009.

• Cal has allowed its opponents to score on only 30-of-134 drives (22.4%). • Cal is ranked among the nation’s top 35 in several key defensive categories

including defensive touchdowns (T11th, 3), first downs defense (T12th, 176), passes intercepted (T13th, 14), total defense (18th, 318.6 ypg), team pass efficiency defense (18th, 111.97), passing yards allowed (20th, 183.8 ypg), third-down conversion percentage defense (22nd, 32.9%), scoring defense (T28th, 21.1 ppg) despite opponents’ defensive scoring six touchdowns and rushing defense (34th, 134.8 ypg).

• Cal leads the Pac-12 in first downs defense, passes intercepted, team pass efficiency defense and passing yards allowed while co-leading the conference in defensive touchdowns.

• In the last four contests, Cal has allowed averages of 12.5 points, 90.5 rushing yards per game and 292.5 total yards per game with eight turnovers, 14.0 sacks and 32.0 tackles for loss.

Dynamic Duo At Inside Linebacker• Evan Weaver and Jordan Kunaszyk are Cal’s leading tacklers this season

with 114 for Kunaszyk and 109 for Weaver. The last time Cal had two players with 100 tackles or more was in 2007 (Thomas DeCoud 116, Worrell Williams 105, Anthony Felder 101).

• Kunaszyk and Weaver lead all Power 5 duos in total tackles per game (22.3), which is also second among all FBS teams. Their combined average of 13.9 solo tackles per game leads the nation.

• Kunaszyk is second in the nation in solo tackles (7.6) and eighth in the in total tackles per game (11.4) per game, while Weaver is eighth in solo tackles (6.3) and 13th in total tackles (10.9).

• Kunaszyk and Weaver have each notched double-digit tackles seven times this year, combining for over a third of Cal’s tackles (33.7%, 223 of 661).

• Kunaszyk boasted a career-best 22 tackles vs. UCLA, which equaled the most by a Cal player since Jerrott Willard collected 22 against USC in 1993. He is on pace for 148 over a 13-game season, which would be the most since Willard finished with 147 in 1993.

• Kunaszyk also has team highs of 11.0 tackles for loss and four forced fumbles, while his 4.0 sacks equal the team’s most. He ranks tied for first in the Pac-12 and tied for third nationally in forced fumbles per contest (0.4). The last time a Cal player had four forced fumbles in a season was Zack Follett in 2006.

• Kunaszyk’s career totals include 239 tackles, 18.0 TFL, 7.5 sacks, three interceptions, five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries with all categories except the interceptions leading all active Cal players.

• Kunaszyk is 19 tackles from Cal’s career top-10 list and 18 shy of the single-season list.

• Weaver garnered Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 29 after collecting 11 tackles and returning his first career interception for his first touchdown against Washington. He garnered career highs of 2.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks at USC.

8 California Notes – vs. Colorado (Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018)

DeRuyter Named A Semifinalist For Broyles Award• Defensive coordinator/outside linebackers coach Tim DeRuyter is one of

15 semifinalists for the Broyles Award, honoring the best assistant coach in college football. The winner will be named Dec. 4.

• Under DeRuyter's direction, Cal is allowing 183.8 yards per game passing and 318.7 yards of total offense, which are its best marks since 1994 (165.2 passing yards) and 2008 (315.2 total yards). Cal’s 21.1 points allowed per game are its least since the 2004 team gave up 19.9.

Patrick Laird Closing In On 1,000 And 2,000 Rushing Yards• Patrick Laird’s career totals now stands at 1963 rushing yards after he had

71 in his most recent contest at USC on November 10. Laird rushed for 193 yards at Oregon State, his sixth career 100-yard rushing performance and his first of 2018. His 5.8 yards per rush against Oregon State tied for second-best of his career (Weber State, 2017).

• Laird scored three touchdowns for the second time in his career at Oregon State (two rushing and one receiving). It was the second time in his career that he has scored a rushing and a receiving TD in the same game (North Carolina, 2018). He now boasts 14 career rushing touchdowns, four shy of Cal’s career top-10 list in that category.

• Laird is the Bears’ leading rusher in 2018 with 179 carries for 771 yards and five touchdowns (all team highs), while he is also Cal’s leader in receptions with 43 catches and his 269 receiving yards rank second with a team-high-tying three touchdown grabs. Laird is on pace for 52 receptions and is currently two catches shy of his 2017 total of 45. Paul Jones owns the school single-season record in recorded history for catches by a running back with 49 in 1979. Laird’s eight receptions (34 yards) at Arizona in 2018 were a career high. He has 91 career receptions for 589 yards and four touchdowns, leaving him nine catches from 100 for his career.

• Laird has totaled 481 of his 771 rushing yards in the last five games after picking up 290 in his first five. In the final five games last season, Laird had 727 of his 1127 rushing yards on the campaign, boasting four 100-yard performances including a career-high 214 yards against Oregon State.

• Laird has an opportunity to become only the third two-time 1000-yard rusher in Cal history with the others Russell White (3) and Marshawn Lynch (2). He needs another 229 yards in 2018 to accomplish the feat.

Laird Honored For His Work On And Off The Field • Patrick Laird has earned a spot on the AFCA Good Works Team® for his

community service efforts highlighted by the Patrick Laird Summer Reading Challenge he conducted in the summer of 2018. The AFCA Good Works Team® celebrates 22 student-athletes and one honorary head coach.

• The 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® will be invited to New Orleans to participate in a special community service project ahead of the 2019 Allstate® Sugar Bowl®, where the entire team will also be recognized on the field during a halftime presentation.

• Laird is a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy (nation’s top combination of academics, community service, and on-field performance) and a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award.

• Laird was on preseason watch lists for the Maxwell Award and Wuerffel Trophy, as well as a candidate for the Doak Walker Award, Burlsworth Trophy, Disney Spirit Award, Jason Witten Man of the Year and Wooden Cup.

• Laird has earned recognition in large part due to his Summer Reading Challenge. Over 3,600 elementary-aged students signed up for the challenge in the summer of 2018 and approximately 1,000 of the participants who completed it by reading either four (grades 1-2) or six (grades 3-6) books during the summer redeemed a total of 3,000 tickets to Cal’s season-opener against North Carolina.

CAL TEAM GAME HIGHS

CAL PLAYER GAME HIGHS

Turnovers Turnaround• In the last four games, Cal has only committed four turnovers with no

interceptions, while forcing two turnovers in each contest.• Cal is 4-0 this year when winning the turnover battle and 2-4 when losing

or even in the turnover battle. In the Bears’ six wins this year they boast a 13-7 turnover advantage, while they are at a 16-5 disadvantage in their four losses.

Garbers Guides Bears Under Center• Chase Garbers has started seven of the team’s 10 games at quarterback,

completing 111-of-176 passes for 1100 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions for a 130.51 passer rating. Garbers is also the team’s third-leading rusher with 307 yards and one touchdown on 66 carries. He rushed for a career-high 67 yards at Washington State, while his 23-yard run at USC was a career-long and his five-yard scoring run his first touchdown on the ground.

• Garbers posted career highs in passing yards (226) and total offense (280) at Oregon State. He also had the longest pass (55) of his career against the Beavers, while his three passing touchdowns tied a personal best (Idaho State). The 55-yard completion to Vic Wharton III is Cal’s longest play from scrimmage this season.

Experienced Offensive Line• Jake Curhan, Valentino Daltoso, Patrick Mekari and Addison Ooms have

each started each of the first 10 games of 2018. Michael Saffell also started the first six contests before suffering an injury prior to the Oregon State game. Ryan Gibson has started the last four games in Saffell’s place.

• Ooms is the only Cal active player to start the past 34 games dating back to 2016. Ooms’ starting games streak is the longest since Jared Goff started all 37 games in his career from 2013-15.

• The five players currently listed as offensive line starters on Cal’s depth chart have combined for 106 career starts with Ooms (34) followed by Mekari (24), Curran (22), Daltoso (19) and Gibson (7).

Bunting And Ways Boost Cal’s WR Corps• Moe Ways and Ian Bunting have given the Cal receiving group a boost after

arriving in Berkeley this fall as graduate transfers from Michigan.• Ways is fourth on the team in receiving with 23 catches for 264 yards,

while Ian Bunting has caught 17 passes for 191 yards. Ways caught eight passes for 97 yards at Arizona, and Bunting garnered three receptions for 26 yards at Washington State.

Bears Are Bowling• Cal is bowl eligible for the first time since 2015. The Bears have won at

least five games every season since 2014 and are one win from matching the 2015 season regular-season win total (7) and two from the final total (8).

• The Bears defeated Air Force, 55-36, in the 2015 Armed Forces Bowl in their most-recent bowl appearance.

• Prior to 2015, Cal played Texas in the 2011 Holiday Bowl after enjoying a streak of seven-straight bowl appearances from 2003-09, going 5-2.

10 California Notes – vs. Colorado (Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018)

Colorado Connections• Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter graduated from Air Force in 1985,

and also had three coaching stints there first as a graduate assistant in 1985 then as an assistant at three different positions from 1989-92 and then, as defensive coordinator from 2007-09 (also served as an assistant head coach from 2008-09)

• Cal’s athletic director Jim Knowlton was the athletic director at Air Force from 2015 until taking the same position at Cal in May of 2018.

Bears Snap 14-Game Losing Streak Against USC• In its most-recent game, Cal snapped a 14-game losing streak against

USC, and it was also the Bears’ first win in the L.A. Coliseum since 2000.• The Bears’ defense allowed USC 40 yards of total offense in the second

half against USC after giving up 237 yards in the first half. Cal allowed just 1.3 yards per play on 31 second-half plays against the Trojans.

• Cal’s seven pass breakups at USC tied for its most this season, its 9.0 tackles for loss were second and its 4.0 sacks tied for second.

• Cal shut out the Trojans in the second half. The last time the Bears shut an opponent out in the second half was in 2017 against Washington State.

• Luc Bequette was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 12 after posting career highs of eight tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks while also forcing his second career fumble at USC.

• Traveon Beck finished with a career-high six tackles against USC, including a tackle for loss on a fake field goal attempt. He also intercepted a pass that led to Cal’s game-winning touchdown and broke up a career-high three passes.

• The win gives Cal a winning record of 3-2 in true road games in 2018. The last time the Bears had a winning road record was in 2014, also 3-2.

Davis Strong In Kick Return Game• Ashtyn Davis currently stands second in the Pac-12 and ninth in the nation

in yards per kick return (27.8). • Davis had his first kick return touchdown (89 yards) vs. Idaho State

and ranks tied for fifth in the nation with his one kick return TD. Against Washington, he rattled off a 55-yard return, second longest of his career.

• Davis shared the nation’s lead in kick returns in 2017 with 39 while ranking ninth in kick return yards (826) and 14th in combined kick return yards (826). His total kick returns and kick return yards in 2017 both rank third in Cal’s single-season history.

• Davis has 58 career kick returns for 1354 yards and an average of 23.3.

Coutts Effective In Punt Game• Steven Coutts’ 73-yard punt in the second quarter vs. Oregon was a career

best, tied for the seventh longest in school history, the longest by a Pac-12 player in 2018 and tied for the 13th longest nationally. It was also the longest punt by a Cal player since Bryan Anger had punts of 75 and 76 yards against Stanford in 2008.

• On the year, Coutts, a native of Brisbane, Australia, has punted 50 times for 2068 yards (41.4) with six 50-yard punts and 25 that have landed inside the 20-yard line. His 25 punts inside the 20 rank tied for first nationally and lead the Pac-12 with the next punter standing at 20 inside the 20. He punted a career-high eight times, including five inside the 20, vs. North Carolina for 269 yards, also a career best. He tied that career high with eight punts and a career-best 351 punt yards at USC.

Playing Clean• Cal is averaging just 3.4 penalties for 34.0 penalty yards per game in five

games since committing 13 penalties for 115 penalties at Arizona. • The Bears have had fewer penalties than the opponents in four of those

contests and fewer or the same in all five.

121st Big Game Postponed• The Cal-Stanford game scheduled for Nov. 17 was postponed to Dec. 1

(Noon) due to the poor air quality primarily from the Camp Fire in Butte County. It marked the first time a Cal football game was postponed since 2004 when the Bears meeting with Southern Miss was postponed from Sept. 16 to Dec. 4, after the scheduled regular-season finale against Stanford, due to Hurricane Ivan along the Gulf Coast.

• The last time a Big Game was postponed was 1963 due to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The game was played on Nov. 30.

Captains• Patrick Laird and Jordan Kunaszyk were selected as team captains for

the 2018 season. In addition to the two season captains, Cal will select two players to be game captains each week. The game captains for the Colorado game have not been determined yet.

In The Booth• Joe Starkey, the legendary voice of the Golden Bears, is in his 44th season

with the Cal football radio broadcast team and has been on the air for 506 of the team’s 513 contests since beginning his tenure at Cal in 1975. On Sept. 29 against Oregon, Joe celebrated his 500th game he has called for the Bears. In 2010, Starkey received the Chris Schenkel Award from the National Football Foundation for his distinguished career broadcasting college football. In 2016, the Cal radio broadcast booth was named The Joe Starkey Broadcast Booth. He was formally inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2018 on Friday, Oct. 26.

• Starkey is joined in the booth by analyst and former Cal quarterback Mike Pawlawski, who is in his seventh season and second stint as part of the Cal football broadcast team in 2018. Pawlawski led Cal to back to-back bowl victories as the Bears’ starting quarterback in 1990 and 1991, and was the Pac-10’s Co-Offensive Player of the Year as a 1991 senior.

• In his 14th season on the broadcast team in 2018 is sideline reporter Todd McKim, who also serves as host of the Cal Athletics’ Bear In Mind weekly podcast and is the analyst for the Cal men’s basketball radio broadcasts.

Justin Wilcox is in his second season as the head football coach at Cal in 2018, guiding the Bears to a 6-4 record and leading the Bears to bowl eligibility after a 15-14 win at USC in Cal’s most recent contest.

Cal’s defense has been vastly improved under Wilcox and currently ranks 18th nationally in total defense and 20th in pass

defense with the latter leading the Pac-12. Cal is allowing 21.1 points, 134.9 rushing yards and 183.8 passing yards and 318.7 total yards per game. The numbers are Cal’s best in pass defense since 1994, scoring and total defense since 2008, and rush defense since 2011.

Jordan Kunaszyk and Evan Weaver are the nation’s leading duo in solo tackles per game with a combined average of 13.9 while ranking first among Power 5 teams and second as a duo in total tackles per contest (22.3). Kunaszyk is second nationally in solo stops with 7.6 and eighth in total tackles per contest with 11.4, while Weaver is eighth (6.3) and 13th (10.9).

Cal started the 2018 season with a 3-0 record and was ranked No. 24 in the AP Top 25 in Week 5 to mark its first appearance in the national polls since Week 9 of the 2015 campaign.

The highlights of Wilcox’s first season as the head coach in Berkeley in 2017 included a 3-0 start and non-conference wins over Power 5 programs North Carolina and Ole Miss, as well as a 37-3 victory over then No. 8/9 Washington State in an ESPN nationally-televised Friday night home game. The victory against the Cougars snapped Cal’s 17-game losing streak to top-10 teams, was the Bears’ first victory against a top-10 team since 2003 and only its second top-10 win since 1977.

Cal finished 5-7 overall in his first season as the head coach at Cal and added a Pac-12 victory over Oregon State while taking three conference squads down to the final moments before falling by a combined total of seven points to Arizona, and in its final two games of the season at UCLA and Stanford.

Much of the 2017 team’s success came from its big-play ability on defense. Cal ranked among the nation’s best for much of the season in nearly every defensive category related to turnovers before finishing tied for 21st in defensive touchdowns (4), tied for 27th in fumbles recovered (10), tied for 29th in turnovers gained (24) and tied for 32nd in passes intercepted (14). Cal’s seven takeaways in a 37-3 win over then No. 8/9 Washington State equaled the second-most by an FBS team in 2017 with the Bears’ 9.0 sacks in the contest the most by a Cal team since 2005. The 2017 Cal defense had better total numbers and rankings than the 2016 squad in 14 of the primary 15 team defensive statistics tracked by the NCAA. Even more impressive was the Bears’ average improvement in the national rankings of just under 40 spots per category in those 15 defensive statistics.

Ross Bowers, Laird, Noa and Vic Wharton III led Cal’s 2017 offense with Bowers throwing for 3039 yards to rank sixth on the Bears’ all-time single-season list, Laird (1127 yards, 8 TD) becoming the 16th Cal player to rush for 100 or more yards in a season and Wharton III (67-871, 5 TD) and Kanawai (56-788, 4 TD) the top two receivers.

Laird was also one of 10 national semifinalsts for the Burlsworth Trophy awarded annually to the nation’s most outstanding football player who began his career as a walk-on in 2017 and is a Burlsworth Trophy semifinalist again in 2018 as well as a national finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. Laird also earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors and was a first-team Pac-12 All-Academic pick in addition to finding a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District® 8 squad. He also earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors and was a first-team Pac-12 All-Academic pick in addition to finding a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District® 8 squad.

Prior to becoming Cal’s head coach, Wilcox spent the previous 11 seasons as a defensive coordinator most recently for Cotton Bowl champion Wisconsin following previous stops at Boise State (2006-09), Tennessee (2010-11), Washington (2012-13) and USC (2014-15). Over his first 16 seasons in collegiate coaching as an assistant, Wilcox was a member of staffs that coached teams to 14 bowl games, five conference or division championships and compiled an all-time record of 150-58.

Wilcox also spent three seasons as the Bears’ linebackers coach from 2003-05 in his first position as a full-time coach

A 1999 graduate of Oregon with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, Wilcox is the son of Dave Wilcox, a Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker who played for the San Francisco 49ers from 1964-74.

As a collegiate student-athlete, Wilcox was a safety and cornerback at Oregon (1996-99), helping the Ducks to three bowl games.
