Happy February!February has always been a very specialmonth for me. As a native New Orleanian,I have had the pleasure to celebrate severalMardi Gras seasons, which commonly occurin February. Mardi Gras beads have becomea global symbol of the holiday festivities.Over 25 million pounds of beads are thrownduring Mardi Gras parades. Historically,these beads were made from glass and wereconsidered pretty rare; today, they are madefrom polystyrene and polyethylene and areconsidered a common but desirable MardiGras trinket.

Also in February, many people celebrate St.Valentine’s Day. Typically, we think ofchocolate and flowers to express love for another. Here are a couple fun twists:cuddling can release oxytocin, which can beused to treat headaches, and kissing mayreduce cortisol, the “stress hormone”.

I hope that you all enjoyed our JanuaryNetworking event which was held at BBCGrill and Tavern in Greenville. This was agreat location to connect a lot of new andold friends. It would be great to have moremembers and non-members participate inour future meetings and networking events.Your feedback on our meetings will help tooutline this year's events. Late summer 2014 some 400,000 residents of Toledo, Ohiolost access to tap water because of a massive bloom of toxiccyanobacteria in Lake Erie. Every summer, similar events occurin watersheds that drain regions where soils are saturated with chemicalfertilizers on farms and lawns. If humans are responsible for this annual toxic tide, whyhas it been so hard to stop it? In this talk, Timothy Johnson will discuss the environmentalhistory of chemical fertilizers in the United States, exploring topics as diverse as guanoislands, explosives production, and comic books to show how fertilizers became an indis-pensable tool for farmers, in spite of the considerable costs they have incurred.

Timothy Johnson is the Allington Dissertation Fellow at the Chemical Heritage Foundationfor 2014-15 and a Ph.D. candidate in history at the University of Georgia. His researchfocuses on environmental and political history. Johnson’s dissertation is titled “Growth In-dustry: Unearthing the Origins of Fertilizer-Fueled Agriculture in America, 1865–1950.”The project investigates the chemicalization of American agriculture during the late 19thand early 20th centuries.

Science on Tap is a monthly science café in Philadelphia for anyone interested in gettingtogether with other people to discuss a range of engaging science topics. It is held the secondMonday of (most) every month.

Located at National Mechanics, a relaxed, convivial bar in Old City, Science on Tap featuresa brief, informal presentation by a scientist or other expert followed by lively conversation.The goal is to promote enthusiasm for science in a fun, spirited, and accessible way, whilealso meeting new people. A talk by Joel KleinJoel Klein is a lecturer at Columbia University and a research fellow in the ChemicalHeritage Foundation′s Institute for Research. He specializes in the history of science andmedicine in the 16th and 17th centuries, with a special emphasis on the interactions amongchemistry, medicine, and atomism in German universities.

Brown Bag Lecture:“Roger Bacon’s Experimental Science”A talk by Elly TruittRoger Bacon’s essay on natural philosophy, experimental science, and magic, Letter on theSecret Powers of Art and Nature, and on the Invalidity of Magic (ca. 1270s), contains almostall of the alchemical ideas that were later attributed to Bacon in the Elizabethan text, TheMirror of Alchimy, as well as speculative technology, and a detailed discussion of necro-mancy. In this short work Bacon explained his concept of scientia experimentalis, whichhe proposed as a way of harnessing natural forces to produce stunning and useful effects.Bacon used alchemy as an extended example of the promise of technology to surpass naturallimits. In this talk Truitt will explore how Bacon’s ideas about the power of human art, ortechnology, are central to his reputation as an alchemist and a necromancer in the late 16thcentury, and to understanding the complex intellectual connections between medieval nat-ural philosophy, magic, and technology and early modern natural philosophy and alchemy.Elly Truitt is an assistant professor at Bryn Mawr College and a 2015 CHF Fellow. Hertalk will focus on her current project, “A Medieval Handbook of Art and Magic.”

Texas Tragedy – Dupont suffered a terrible accident inNovember at its plant in LaPorte, Texas.The release of 23,000 pounds of methylmercaptan killed four workers and sent afifth to the hospital. (Refer to C&E News,December 22 issue.)

Given the strong traditional safety culture ofDupont, the loss of four lives is hard tocomprehend. When I joined their TextileResearch Lab at Chestnut Run in 1957, mysafety training began on day one. It wasmade clear that refusal to follow safety ruleswas fast route to termination.

I returned to Dupont’s Pioneering ResearchLab at the Experimental Station in 1962.Again their safety culture was stressed onmy first day. This was excellent preparationwhen I joined the faculty at the Universityof Wisconsin-Eau Claire. They quicklymade me Chair of the Safety Committee.

A detailed report of this accident will even-tually be available. I am curious to readhow this event was able to occur in spite ofDupont’s fine safety culture.

Our New ACS CEO – It is great news thatour ACS Board of Directors, after a reviewof 200 candidates, selected Thomas M.Connelly, Jr. to lead our organization. Hischem engineering background started atPrinceton University and was completed atCambridge University. He joined Dupont in1978 and has had a very successful career.He has been serving as executive vicepresident and chief innovation officer. Hebegins his new job on February 17.

The Evolution of Dupont –The recent news about changes at thecompany are quite startling. Dupont Corporatewill move from the historic headquarters indowntown Wilmington to the new buildingat Chestnut Run in the western suburbs.

Then comes the “Great Spinoff” toChemours, which will occupy the formercorporate space in the Dupont Building.

This new company will take over thetitanium dioxide business, the fluorochemicalsbusiness and several other product lines.For example, sulfuric acid has long been acompany product. Just a few years agoDupont built a new sulfuric acid plant tosupply the Delaware City Refinery. Willthat become part of Chemours or be sold tothe refinery? Stay tuned!

Bad Blood –I am not talking about the Ravens and Steelersmatchup or the Big Ten/SEC comparison. Itis much more personal.

Back in November I read that blood donorswere needed as we approached the holidayseason. Usually my O-Negative blood wasin great demand since it can be given tothose with other blood types. And it can begiven to both Republicans and Democrats!

I visited the Blood Bank of Delaware andoffered them a pint of my precious fluid.They asked my age. When I said 80, theysaid no thanks. They do not accept GeezerBlood!

While I admit my blood may contain tracesof ethanol, caffeine, chocolate and dailyproducts, it still works for me. To be turnedaway by the Blood Bank was a blow to mypsyche. I coped with a glass of Baileys IrishCream.

Meanwhile, I hope you are off to a goodstart in 2015. Best wishes for a promotion,a raise and a Nobel!%
