Mabuhay!

The year 2015 had been a year of vitality and productivity for FASO. There has been a growing spirit of dynamism, creativity, and interest among ocers, members of FASO, that spread itself to the various Filipino American organizations and into the Greater Cincinnati communi-ty. We have awakened the interest, involvement of our "Kababayan" who were not even aware of our existence. We have also put FASO on the public eye, through our involvement with the Krohn conservatory, our web site, our Face Book, and brochures. The board of directors for 2016-2017 have the infusion of fresh eager, highly talented, creative and energetic new board members. We are looking forward to a year of increasing Cohesion , among Filipino Americans in the community, collaboration among Filipino Americans organizations and increased provision of meaningful,

signicant services to our communities here and our native land. Be a part of our dynamic community, where you and your family can have a sense of belonging and your children , a sense of ethnic identity and camaraderie . A community where our next generation of Filipino

American children will learn about the richness of the Filipino culture through our cultural Performing arts group; where they can have the platform to practice their various skills: social, public

speaking, leadership and where their God given unique talents can be shared and honed.A community that focuses on building our youth's self esteem through the experience Of success and recognition. Join our powerhouse, called FASO.

“We have awakened the interest , involvement of

our " Kababayan"who were not even aware of

our existence.”

....families: adobo, lumpia, pansit and desserts, all from dierent parts of the Philippines. Here are some comments from those who attended the event: “What joyful dancing and singing!” “Filipino-Americans know how to party!” “I wish all my family was here to enjoy this!” “Are you doing this again next year?”

The event, which drew a crowd of nearly 250 people for the two repeat performances, was a huge success in showcasing our Filipino heritage to the community at large. Enabled by a grant from the Artswave organiza-tion, the event was elevated to the fabulous and awe-inspiring by our Filipino spirit of “bayanihan” – so many individuals and families were involved (see box), selessly giving their time, talent, skill, energy, enthusiasm, and passion. We hope to be back at the Arts Sampler in 2017!

2015

1st QuarterButteries of the Philippines. FASO, with magnanimous support from UF-AMS, Fil-Am of NoKY, PNA-CinNoKY, BLD, APPGC, Kalesa, partnered with the KROHN Conservatory of the Cincinnati Parks & Recreation in their annual Butteries Show. It was a major venue to showcase Philippine culture through performing arts, folk music, Filipiniana attire, food & beverage, games and visual art. Co-planning with Krohn counterparts in eleven (11) major show events, spanning almost three months, brought local Filipinos from neighboring counties, from out of state together to feel “like home.”

2nd QuarterThe annual FASO Fundraising event with a theme “Pista sa Nayon.” Held at the school gym of the Annunciation Catholic School in Clifton, it marked many “rsts”- rst time to hold a silent auction, rst time to feature dierent varieties of rice from the Cordilleras (Banawe Rice Terraces), rst time an event was held specically for the purpose of raising funds to sustain FASO’s various programs and projects benetting its’ members, the local community and our mother country.

Asian Culturefest, where FASO is a regular participant, is a crowd-drawer and pleaser. Each “nation” representatives not only set up booths but render to the public entertainment lled with enthusiastic dancers, musicians to the delight of an equally enthusiastic crowd.

Mother’s Day was celebrated at Corpus Christi with the FASO Adult Chorale rendering choir music and songs during the Eucharistic celebration. A reception was held after the mass with food and entertainment, the latter provided by the FASO Performing Arts Youth Dance Troupe.

The anniversary of the Philippine Independence brings the FASO Youth and Adult Dance Troupe across the bridge to Kentucky- at the Kenton County Library.

3rd QuarterSummer’s highlight is the FASO Annual Summer Picnic at Keehner Park. Filipino games are played by the young ones and young-at-heart. Patintero has become quite competitive that families actually form teams. This is a free-to-members event and to Friends of FASO.

The Philippine Consular Oce of Chicago- Outreach visited Cincinnati to bring their services to the tri-state/cities of Gr. Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Indiana. Among the services rendered were passport renewal, dual citizenship swearing-in, general consultation. Bill & Ninfa Guinigundo graciously hosted dinner at their home to welcome the consular guests. The Guinigundos’ oce was made into a service center on that one full-day event.

FASO is honored to be part of the National Federation of Filipino-American Associations (NaFAA) -KY/Re-gion 3 Conference and Cultural Presentation. Special guests were the Philippine ambassador to the U.S., Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. and the “straight arrow” General Antonio Taguba.

The feast of Penafrancia was the high point of the fall season. Hosted by Bukas Loob sa Diyos (BLD), FASO’s Performing Arts Youth Dance Troupe once more wow’ed the audience with their dexterity in Tinikling.

4th QuarterWith winter comes the holidays, the most wonderful time of the year. A triad of activities blend into the whole tapestry of how Pinoys celebrate the month of December. Parol-making followed by Simbang Gabi where the nished parol are held by the children in a parade-like oering. This slew of activities culminates to the annual Christmas Party.

It has indeed been a whirlwind of note-worthy events. It’s been said that it’s always FUN in the Philippines; FASO embodies that spirit of FUN and shares it in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

In grateful recognition for their dedication, passion and valuable contribution in their respective positions; and for all their eorts toward the successful completion of the projects, goals and aspirations of FASO, in the service of the Filipino American community, I would like to recognize following ocers and members of the board:

Special recognition also goes to Alex Trinidad, Jason Dimaculangan and Maricel Galman for their commitment and dedication in developing the ‘Filipino American Cultural Performing Arts” solely dedicated in providing cultural venues to our FilAm youths.

n our eort to cultivate camaraderie and cohesive Filipino community, we hasted various social events, such as: the Spring Event, Mother’s Day celebration, FASO picnic and the Christmas Party.

•To serve the needs of our community, we hosted the Philippine Embassy Consular Outreach and various educational workshops; such as presentation of the Philippine Heritage through ethnic food to the US Federal Court Diversity program. We also hosted parol making and the Simbang Gabi.

•To promote our culture we participated in the Union Terminal Asian Culture Festival and collaborated with Krohn Conservatory in the Buttery of the Philippines exhibit. These events gave the FilAm community exposure to thousands of people in the greater Cincinnati area.

•To increase our visibility and communications we continued to improve our website, Facebook, Bulletin and email account FASOMabuhay.com

These and many other projects and activities that FASO hosted or participated in would not have been possible without the support and participation of FASO’s members, friends, donors, cultural perform-ers, committee members, ocers and board of directors.

to cook.” At a young age, I’ve always joined my lolos in the kitchen as they are the main cooks of the family. At age 8, we immigrated to Toronto, Canada. My mother has reminded me that there are no yaya’s (house helpers) there so I was thrown in with a lot of responsibilities which I tackled head on. While my parents are at work in Downtown Toronto, I was to take my sister home with me and almost every day I cooked rice and prepared 1 or 2 ulam (dish) before they get home from work. That’s when I really sharpened my culinary skills. I would ask for recipes from my mom, copy recipes and add a little touch of my own. I would experiment with whatever is in the fridge that I could prepare. I have always prepared something soupy like Sinigang, Tinola, Nilaga and I would always pair it with something fried. Most of the time, I cooked adobo which is my favorite Pinoy Dish.

Directions:For optimum taste, marinade pork and chicken in a deep bowl overnight with lots of garlic, soy sauce, vinegar, black peppercorns and bay leaves.

In a wok, pour 2 teaspoon of oil medium heat, drain marinated pork and save the sauce for later use. Cook until pork is brown on all sides. Slowly add leftover sauce along with chicken. Bring the chicken and pork to a boil then lower the heat. Next, cover and let it simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the lid and simmer until the sauce is reduced and thickened and the chicken and pork is tender for about 20 more minutes. The last step is to broil in oven uncovered for 10 mins or less adding some parsley akes for nishing touches. Most importantly, serve with steamed rice.

Ingredients:

•2lbs Chicken thighs

•2lbs Pork belly

•1/2 cup white vinegar

•1/2 cup Kikkoman soy sauce

•5-6 cloves garlic, crushed

•1 teaspoon black peppercorns

•3 bay leaves

•steamed rice, for serving
