Entry #1 WGSN – January 29, 2013
WGSN is an extremely useful website that keeps up-to-date all of the latest
fashion news articles, reports, and photographs that one could hope for. The
articles cover anything from men’s/women’s wear, fashion highlights, beauty
reviews, trend forecasts, and more. Continually, there is a section that displays
the latest catwalks and is available for users to scroll through and review. Not
only are current/future trends analyzed on this site, but also financial status
reports on corporate companies are kept current. WGSN is a tool that is never
behind in updating its fashion information.
I find that this website is crucial to the fashion industry because the
industry as a whole is consistently moving, evolving, and quick to change. If
you’re trying to thrive in the fashion world but cannot stay up to date on what’s
going on, then you will surely struggle to succeed. WGSN allows anyone to be on
top of all things fashion news.
THE ARTICLE
Lindsay Lohan is looking to seek royalities from D.N.A.M. Apparel Industries
(whom are her formers collaborators) on a clothing line, demanding over $1.1
million and renewed control over the brand’s trademarks. Lohan claims the
southern California-based apparel company that licensed her 6126 Collection as
part of a five-year celebrity clothing deal has defaulted on $900,000 in
guaranteed minimum royalties plus 10% of net sales.
What I find comical about this whole dispute is the fact that Lohan
manages to passionately follow through with suing an entire industry for
supposedly stealing away her money when in fact, she has been charged with
shoplifting convictions herself. Perhaps she should put her fashion design
company on hold until she can manage to stay out of court hearings by not
breaking the law, as opposed to making up petty excuses like conveniently
coming down with the “flu.”

Entry #2 History – February 05, 2013
A recent addition to the fashion trends of today is baroque inspired prints. It can be seen on many various articles of clothing ranging from couture fashion to ready-to-wear. Elements of this trend include the following:
• Embroidery, needlepoint and tapestry.
• Rich fabrics like velvet, leather and silk brocades.
• Gold, gold and more gold. Gold hardware, gold embellishments, gold thread.
• Ornate patterns that preference symmetry over asymmetry and curves over
hard lines.
This neo-baroque/rococo style is similar to past fashions by the ornate filigree
designs and rich colors, along with an heir of regality. However, the “neo” comes
into play by how the clothing is structured. Many designs are subject to modern
forms of casual wear like leggings and pants. Even swim suits are being featured
with baroque patters, adding an unusual mix of renaissance drama to modern
day wear.

New Beauty Brand: B. Skincare & B. Makeup
A recent addition to the beauty market is B. Skincare and B. Makeup, by UK
based health and beauty retailer Superdrug. Maxine Leonard, an ambassador and
make-up artist for B states that, “The B. Makeup range is straightforward and
uncomplicated, taking a simple approach, cutting out the jargon and delivering season
trends.”
B’s latest product development has a stand out feature; they do not label their
products with the company’s name that hopes to remain dignified as a stand-alone
creation. The B makeup and skincare line is affordable and has already seen a good
deal of success in Britain. Hong Kong’s AS Watson owns Superdrug, so there will most
likely be a focus on international development for this beauty line. B products are aiming
to include a wide variety of products for every skin type and an any-age demographic
that will be included online and in-stores.

Entry #4 Men’s Trend – February 16, 2013
Dr. Martens are a fairly popular workbook gone fashion statement within
recent years. They are heavy-duty combat boots that are made for durability
and rough terrain. Lately in recent trend wear, Dr. Martens are worn for the
“grunge” aspect of them. Today it is seen in many darker themed styles, among
them including Goth, punks, grunge, etc. However, this trend has greatly blown
up in the mainstream fashion world and can be seen being worn from all ranges
of subculture styles. I personally am a huge fan of Dr. Martens due to their
durability, quality, comfort, and overall design. They add the perfect tough
element to any outfit I put together with them.
Jacob Addington is a fellow fashion buff that I interviewed. He is a major
fan of Dr. Martens and had this to say when I asked his opinion on them:
“They can be dressed up or down so they go with almost anything. Over
all they’re just fantastic boots. They’re really tough and they hold up better than
others. They aren’t flashy but people still recognize them.”
Today, Dr. Martens can be seen in a variety of colors, patterns, and styles.

Entry #5 New Show/Movie – February 20, 2013
The Carrie Diaries is an American teen drama television series on
The CW. It is a prequel to the HBO television series Sex and the City and
based on the book of the same name by Candace Bushnell. This will
definitely have an effect on mainstream fashion, considering the main
passion for Carrie besides writing on the show Sex and the City was
everything high fashion.
The trend I believe that will be prominently influential is a revamp of
the 1980’s look. Everyone is well aware that the 80’s were a pretty sad
time for fashion, but I believe when done right like in this show, it could
easily catch on today. These shoes being worn by Carrie in the new series
The Carrie Diaries are sure to influence it’s audience with these eye
catching peep toes and fun, extravagantly colored/pattern pointed
pumps.
The show adds a flirtier, fashion forward spin on gaudier days of the
80’s past and is a fresh breath of air compared to the current winter trend
of dark, dark, dark. Once springtime hits in full force, color-blocking and
quirky patterned shoes should be seen in high-demand and in runways
around the world.

WGSN ANALYSIS
“SPRING/SUMMER 2014 IS A SEASON OF HYBRIDS. NATURAL, IMPERFECT AND RAW-LUXE ASPECTS ARE OFFSET AGAINST PRECISE, SYNTHETIC AND DIGITISED ELEMENTS, BALANCING BETWEEN THE PRIMITIVE AND FUTURISTIC, THE EXPRESSIVE AND CONSERVATIVE, AND THE VIBRANT AND SUBDUED.” Helen Palmer Head of Materials & Knit, WGSN

WGSN ANALYSIS • All-over photoreal prints emerge as a key print trend for skinny jeans,
with eye-catching colours, pictorial scenes and digital landscapes • Key items: apply to women's core low- and mid-rise skinny fits for a
commercial fashion update • Pattern: neon cityscapes and picturesque country scenes, reworked
floral-leopard hybrids, abstract cracked textures and blown-up photoreal floral and feather prints
• Fabric: compact PFD stretch twill and sateen denim constructions
WGSN ANALYSIS
• Fabric: pull fabric scraps from the haberdashery box, mixing up retro florals, liberty prints and cotton lawns, or take inspiration from Japanese boro textiles and patch up old denim with more old denim: anything goes
• Colour: when patching together different prints, limit the colour palette to create consistency within the design. Layer up denim in different shades of indigo for a boro effect
Styling: DIY patching gives a personal touch to cut-off denim, skinny jeans and rehashed shirting, as seen at summer festivals and on the street. Higher-end alternatives see patchwork dressed up in simple tailored shift dresses and woven tees. Simplify this look for a more commercial direction by using regularly sized patches or translating into print

MEN’S DON’T: Popping Your Collar/Collars
- One collar is enough - The look is unclean and undignified - You will most likely be made fun of - Appears like you’re trying extremely hard to be noticed
MEN’S DON’T: Wear Your Pants Past Your Butt
- Sloppy - Body looks dwarfed - The “thug” look isn’t working for anyone, ever - You will probably hurt yourself from waddling
INTRO TO FASHION STUDIES JOURNAL 17
WOMEN’S DON’T: Uggs and Shorts (Or Uggs In General)
- It’s not cold out - Comfort does not override the fact that these boots give the worst shape - Blatantly unflattering - Contradicting
WOMEN’S DON’T: (Most) Heels with Denim
- Sloppy - Symmetry is off - Cuts off Ankles - Women tend to wear pants that are too long or the leg is too wide,
devouring their shoes - The heel/toe looks awful poking out of the pants
