Fashion - A. S. Degree and Certificates of Competence and Completion

The fashion program prepares students for employment in the field of design and production ormerchandising and provides upgrade opportunities for currently employed personnel. Upon completing thedegree or certificate requirements, students gain proficiency in clothing, construction, fashion illustration,pattern making, draping, computer aided fashion design, and manufacturing. Students completing therequirements for the merchandising option will also gain proficiency in presentation techniques, planning,promotion, fashion coordination, advertising and sales. Competencies will be assessed by portfolios andexhibitions of original apparel design and garments. Students may expect to enter industry as a designassistant, costume technician, fashion consultant, stylist, entry-level pattern maker, quality control assistant,assistant merchandiser, or sales associate.

This course emphasizes drawing thefashion figure in detailed proportionusing different media. This course is the study of draping techniques tocreate original garment designs. The drapingprocess is the development of a garment throughfabric manipulation directly on a dress form. Tomaintain design integrity, this course emphasizesthe relationship of the fabric hand, color print andstructure so students will be able to solveunfamiliar design problems.

Fashion 27Fashion Merchandising

Fashion Merchandising curriculum is designedfor students who wish to enter the field apparelmerchandising, including advertising, sales andbuying at the wholesale or retail level andgarment manufacturing. The course contentincludes orientation to the fashion industry:careers in the field; selection, promotion, andselling of fashion merchandise; fashion coor-dination; merchandising mathematics; and au-xiliary fashion enterprises.

Fashion 28Visual Merchandising

The basic concepts, techniques and planningprocedures for visual merchandising. The visualapproach to selling with emphasis on display.Current methods of visual merchandising arediscussed including use of mannequins, pinning,and flying, as well as the display layout of astore.

Fashion 29abComputer Aided Design/Patternmaking

This course covers the application of computerpattern aided design “PAD System” software.Using the tools of the PAD system, students willdraft and manipulate basic blocks and garmentstyles. Students will work in teams to simulatethe work environment.

This course covers the important periods ofcostume design and their effects andrelationships to political, social and economicconditions of the times and how they haveinfluenced life styles and culture. Emphasis isplaced on both aesthetic and functional aspectsof costumes and their importance in the evolutionand inspiration of modern dress.

Fashion 35Applied Color Theory

Essential theories of color perception. Appliedproblems dealing with color interactionphenomenon, effects and function that occur ininterior design and fashion design. Students willdeal with such problems as personal colors andrelated colors as they apply to interior or fashiondesign.

Fashion 36Advanced Apparel Patternmaking

The course continues the study of flat patterndrafting and draping methods to produce apparelpatterns quickly and accurately. For thedevelopment of design skills, students createindividual projects that have unusual draftingangles and intricate draping details.

Associate Degree

Definition of Associate DegreeThe Associate Degree leads students through

patterns of learning experiences designed to developcertain capabilities and insights. Among these are theability to think critically and to communicate clearly andeffectively both orally and in writing; to use mathematics,to understand the modes of inquiry of the majordisciplines; to be aware of other cultures and times; toachieve insights gained through experience in thinkingabout ethical problems; to find, evaluate, use andcommunicate information in various formats; and todevelop the capacity for self-understanding. In addition tothese accomplishments, the student shall possesssufficient depth in some field of knowledge to contribute tolifetime interest.

Graduation and TransferTo receive an Associate in Arts or an Associate in

Science degree from El Camino College, a student mustcomplete at least 60 units in degree applicable collegecourses, which must include course work in an approvedtransfer major or associate degree program. Course worktoward the degree must be completed with a cumulativegrade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher. A minimumof 12 of the required 60 degree applicable units must becompleted at El Camino College. A notation of“Graduation with Honors” is earned with a cumulativeGPA of 3.5 or higher.

Students must file an intent to graduate in theAdmissions Office during the scheduled filing period.

Evaluation of CompletionOf Requirements

Students who want to graduate from El Caminocollege with an Associate in Arts or Associate in Sciencedegree must file an Intent to Graduate form, which isevaluated according to the following conditions:

1. Catalog requirement – Degree requirements arederived from the catalog in effect at the time thestudent entered El Camino College or from thecurrent catalog, following the Catalog Rightsguidelines (described below). Each catalog is ineffect during the academic year for which it waspublished (fall semester through the summersession).

2. Residency requirement – A minimum of 12 of therequired degree applicable units must becompleted at El Camino College.

3. Unit requirement – Sixty (60) degree applicableunits are required for the associate degree,including appropriate general education and majorrequirements.

4. Course work toward the degree must becompleted with a cumulative grade point average(GPA) of 2.0 or higher.

Catalog RightsCatalog Rights are a specific set of requirements,

which the student must satisfy to qualify for anAssociate Degree, a Certificate of Competence, or aCertificate of Completion. Students who havemaintained continuous attendance may choose tograduate under the catalog requirements in effecteither 1) at the time they began attending El Camino

College or 2) at the time they graduate from ElCamino College. For degree and certificatepurposes, continuous attendance is defined asenrollment at El Camino College at least onesemester, excluding summer, each calendaryear; courses must be noted on the transcriptwith a letter grade, a W or a CR/NC designation.

Double MajorStudents may receive a double major upon

completion of the major requirements for thesecond major.

Second DegreeStudents may receive both an Associate in

Arts and an Associate in Science Degree uponthe completion of the specific general educationand major requirements for each degree asstated in the catalog.

Transfer OptionTo be at junior level standing, students must

complete 60 units of transferable courses aslisted in the El Camino College catalog. Seesection on Preparation for Transfer.

Although most courses at El Camino Collegetransfer at minimum as an elective, only certainarticulated courses actually meet the generaleducation and major requirements. Studentsneed to be very selective in the courses theytake to satisfy either “General Education” and/or“Major” requirements by strictly following theguide sheets available in the CounselingServices Center.

General Education RequirementsThe general education requirements are

valid for students entering El Camino College inthe fall of 1983 or thereafter. Some courseslisted in the associate degree requirements maynot transfer to a 4-year college or university.Please refer to the course notations listed laterin the curriculum section of the catalog.

All degrees require a total of 60 units with nofewer than 18 units in the major and appropriategeneral education courses as indicated on theA.A. or A.S. degree patterns that follow.
