‘Packaging Design’ Course Review

Trainer: Martin Leon

The aim of the course was to give participants the knowledge and proper instruments for planning, creating, developing and representing original designs of decorative packaging collections. Students were able to observe different product typologies through theoretical sessions and actual samples to develop design a functional criteria for their own interpretation of forms, colors, decorations and proportions.

Some of the main topics included:

-Elements of packaging history

-A brief study of shapes, materials, logos & closures.

- Basic elements of geometric drawing related to packaging

- Geometric volume representation methods and graphic techniques

‘Textile Knowledge for Fashion’

Possibly one of the most important courses for any-one in the fashion design industry!

The goal of the course was to acquire a complete un-derstanding about fabrics and how to plan a complete fashion collection. Particu-lar emphasis was given for fabric matching and styling

entire collection.

Participants were able to explore different types of fabrics, ranging from high fashion fabrics like taffeta, moiré, lace, embroidery, fur to the more basic ones like wool, cotton, linen, etc..

JO! By Creative Jordan Fashion Show -Amman

Italy has been supporting the development of Creative Industries in Jordan and on the occasion of the 16th Week of Italian Language and Culture; the Italian Embassy in Amman and the Garment Design & Training Services

of the new Fashion Brand JO! by Creative Jordan at

launched the Spring/Summer 2017 collection to the public to show the results of the Creative Jordan project. It was to be part of the Italian language & culture week in 2016 and having the support from the EU, the Italian Ambassador HE Mr. Giovanni Brauzzi and such an honor to have HRH Princess Wijdan Ali in our audience.

The Project

JO! is a new Jordanian fashion brand that has been developed within “Creative Jordan” project.

Funded by EU and the Italian Cooperation and implemented by UNIDO (United Nation Organization for Industrial Development),”Creative Jordan” is part of the regional project “CREATIVE MEDITERRANEAN - Resilience Through Creativity».

It is developed in collaboration with the Garment Design & Training Services Center in Amman, and engages a team of Jordanian designers and local manufacturing factories.

The aim of “Creative Jordan” is to improve the design and manufacturing process in the garment industry, using traditional embroidery with modern styles and facilitating the access to international markets.

The Hangar Exhibition -Amman Design Week

Amman Design Week is an annual immersive experience in design thinking and creativity. Focused on creating a forum for learning, exchange and collaboration, this platform empowers designers and invites them to engage in the cross-pollination of communities and ideas. During the week, many exhibitions and events took place all over Amman.

Amman Design Week opened with a design exhibition presenting selected works by a new generation of experimental local and regional designers, being part of this big artistic movement that made noise in Amman was something important for Creative Jordan.

CREATIVITY SHOW- VIENNA

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization UNIDO organized an event in celebration of UNIDO’s 50th anniversary, the program took place at UNIDO’s headquarters in Vienna. JO! was invited to be part of the Creativity show; ‘New stories of old traditions’, which showcased the UNIDO projects from several countries. Who are working to foster innovation in traditional industries with the objective of adding value to cultural heritage and traditional know-how, while modernizing the product in order to reach new international markets.

Creative Jordan presented a fashion show for JO! during the function and delivered a speech during the reception sharing the story behind the brand and

ambassadors, country representatives, ministers and private sector representatives were amongst the guests attending the creativity show.

Arab Fashion Week- Dubai

JO! by Creative Jordan participated as an exhibitor at Arab Fashion Week in Dubai at Al Meydan Hotel, this was the brands international debut. Arab

representing the 22 Arab countries; organized by

fashion council. The Arab Fashion Week is a platform promoting regional and international designers, hosted in Dubai, twice a year.

Creative Textiles course

This creative course gave the students a more artistic look at garment designing. After a deep introduction to the different types of textiles : Fibers, Yarns, Fabrics, Finishings and Fabric families .Students also learnt several different handmade techniques during practical sessions like beading, hand embroidery, free hand painting on silk as well as tie & dye. The group of students formed a group called ‘Creative Hands’ and worked on a special collection of hand decorated garments that were displayed at ‘Hands events’ in Amman.

Pattern-Making Courses

The Garment Design and Training Services Center (GSC) with the support of JModa has started the new Pattern- making courses at Istituto di ModaBurgo Fashion school / GSC.

A Comprehensive program has been implemented on several groups of students interested in

and production. A simple sketch can be turned into a garment via a pattern which interprets the design in the form of the garment components.

Sketching Courses

The sketching courses illustrate all coloring and fashion drawing techniques, opening the door to imagination and consequently the creation of different types of clothes and accessories. During the sketching program the students will be expected to engage in a lot of practical exercises.

Although the advent of design technology has made it easier to create sketches, fashion sketching

fashion design student must master. This introductory class provides instruction on how to render fashion

variety of media and techniques. By the end of the course, students will have learned how to draw the

adding detail and design. Emphasis is on making quick sketches depict the human body and clothing while maintaining accurate representation, proportion, tone and depth.

GSC/Burgo Training Courses Implement A Practical Methodology

Burgo’s methodology gives emphasis to manual drawing, as it teaches how to build a pattern from the simplest basis, from which further styles can be developed

Each student is assisted taking into account his/her individuality. Students also learn to use the CAD system, a computer-aided design software specialized for the clothing industry and mainly used at big clothing factories, for the process of design, grading sizes and design-documentation, A PC station is made available to each student at the course and students are supplied with the Burgo manuals and drawing tools
