If visiting 121 West End Ave., you’ll be in the midst of a perenni-al winning restaurant — and repeat win-ner in two categories — in farragutpress’ 2020 Reader’s Choice Awards for Town busi-nesses.

It’s no wonder Farragut’s Buddy’s bar-b-q proved to be most popular once again as “Best Barbecue” and “Best Caterer” in a recent survey of Town resi-dents.

After all, co-owner Jaime Smothers Lemoncelli is the granddaughter of Buddy’s founder, Buddy Smothers.

“Obviously we’re elated to win it; I know we’ve won it in years past,” said Mark Lemoncelli, a co-owner of the Farragut location along with being president/CEO of the company. “Being that it’s Reader’s Choice, it kinda hits home as to where we stand in the Farragut community.”

Meanwhile, if you are looking to free yourself of refined sugar — and still enjoy sweet treats, a relatively new business stood tall and also captured a 2020 Reader’s Choice Award.

Juice Bar, 11681 Parkside Drive, was named, appropriately enough, “Best Juice Bar.”

Co-owners Hien Pham and his wife, Christina Nguyen, ac-complished this recognition of success despite owning the busi-ness — also including a location in Bearden — for less than 14 months (May 16, 2019).

“Both my wife and I were very excited about that,” Pham said about winning.

These were among 96 over-all Reader’s Choice first-place winners, which are celebrated annually in this section.

To find out the ingredients of success, let’s take a closer look at Buddy’s bar-b-q and Juice Bar.

Buddy’s bar-b-qThe Farragut location, open

for roughly 30 years according to Lemoncelli, carries on a special tradition.

Buddy’s “has been in business since 1972, 48 years, and what hits home the most is our value and the consistent quality of food we provide at a fair price,” he added about the Farragut res-taurant being among 16 current, and two soon-to-open, locations from Bristol to Chattanooga. “I think that’s what keeps the loyal customers coming.”

As for the most popular menu items, “Our top seller every day, of course, is our traditional pork sandwich,” Lemoncelli said. “And our wings are wildly popular these days.”

Dorris Ashton and assistant manager Karen Nelson.

“We’re very proud of the level of service we provide,” Lemoncelli said. “We have long tenures (of employment) on aver-age.”

Within the company, for example, “The average general manager has probably a 20-plus-year tenure with Buddy’s,” he added.

On the other hand, at the Farragut lo-cation in particular, “We hire a lot of high school kids,” the relatively new president/CEO said about giving many teenagers ages 15 and above their first employment experience.

Further enhancing the dining experi-ence at the Farragut Buddy’s, “We just did a major remodel,” he said about the upgrades, which began late in 2019 and were completed in January. “We com-pletely re-modeled that Farragut store.

“That was kind of a prideful thing for us,” Lemoncelli added. “… That’s the look and feel that all of our new stores are going to have. … And as we re-model ad-ditional stores, they’ll look like that.”

While Jaime Lemoncelli has the family linage — which also included her father, Mark Smothers, as company president/CEO after Buddy Smothers retired — “I’ve been involved since last February,” Lemoncelli said about recently taking over for his retiring father-in-law.

Restaurant hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Sunday through Thursday; and from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday.

For more information, or to place a pick-up or carryout order at the Farragut restaurant, call 865-675-4366.

Juice BarWith the business having existed since

2012 according to Pham, “We were looking for a way to turnaround Juice Bar and get it back to the way it was,” he added.

Relaying customer feedback, Pham said he is told, “‘We are nicer and we are cleaner.’

“The cleanliness is actually what brought us to the front line,” he added.

“Ever before this pandemic, we were

known for that.” As for another major key to success,

“We are known for super-healthy drinks,” Pham said. “What we sell is all natural — no sugar, no syrup, no ice, no water. … We don’t even buy sugar.

However, “We actually use honey,” he added.

“… What we sell is straight cold-pressed juice, and smoothies straight from frozen fruit.”

The business’ top-selling juice is “Sweet Greens,” Pham said about “the vegetable most people don’t want to think about as a drink. … It’s just pressed juice, but it tastes really good without sugar or any kind of syrup.”

Acai Bowl, another menu favorite from the acai berry, “Is a Smoothie bowl. A lot of people don’t know that you can actually eat a Smoothie in a bowl,” he said.

In fact, “It’s a complete meal in one … it’s organic,” Pham added. “It has fruit in it, it has dressing with almond butter and honey.”

In addition, “Especially in summertime, Smoothies in general are some of our best sellers,” he said. “We have so many differ-ent kinds.”

Helping make Farragut’s Juice Bar popular and successful are anywhere from eight to 10 employees, led by general manager Elisabeth Goldschmitt. “We appreciate and we love our employees,” Pham said. “They are hard working, and customer service is a No. 1 priority.”

As for Goldschmitt, “She has been superb,” he added.

While saying “the most critical part of any business is to survive the first year,” Pham admitted the couple and employees had to overcome “a lot of turbulence” that comes with operating most any first-year business.

“And then we faced the pandemic, which is tough for everyone,” he added.

However, “Farragut is phenomenal,” Pham said. “This community has support-ed us through just about everything.”

Business hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday.

For more information, call Juice Bar at 865-288-3889.

The recent diffi cult times have reminded us of how essential

our pets are. They continue to provide companionship, com-

fort, stability, and most famously, unconditional love. We were

amused by social media of family pets participating in stay

at home, and heartwarmed by a surge in pet adoptions. On

behalf of the veterinary community, thank you for the love and

READERS CHOICE FARRAGUTPRESS THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2020 • 17C

Over more than 30 years, Dixie Lee has undergone a lot of changes. From our very early days of a much smaller store that sat in the middle of what is now

Watt Road, to the new building which opened in 1991, to the expansion that opened in 2015, we have grown and changed along with the Farragut community we grew up in. Dixie Lee now includes a third generation of our Family that was not even born when it opened.

Our Father Sam Taylor always stressed that our employees and customers are the most valuable assets we have. Although many of the names and faces have changed over the years, each of them literally built this business with their talents and sustained it with their support through all the changes, over three decades.

Some things, however, have not changed. We are still blessed to be surrounded by good people, and still blessed and beyond grateful that with so many other options, our customers have stayed with us.

Thank You!

The Taylor Family
