Dear Parents,

Happy October!

October means we’ve been back at school for a month now. The kids are settling in, getting to know the teachers and the teachers are getting to know our kids. New friendships are being formed and old friendships, which lay dormant over the summer, are being rekindled. The Fall Festival is ramping up and school fundraising is rearing its lovely head. After school programs have started, along with school electives, such as band, choir and bells. I hear laughter and chatter in the halls in the mornings and afternoons. Backpacks are bulging and the lost clothing rack is already in use. As much as kids count down the days in June until summer break, they seem, for the most part, to be happy to be back at school. In general, life at home and at school is settling into a familiar routine.

Farragut Elementary’s biggest outdoor family and community event is almost here!

Fall Festival is quickly approaching! Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 22rd from 11am to 4pm in the green space behind the school. Again this year, we will have

our arts and crafts vendors selling their handmade items. Many of these vendors are Farragut parents so bring your pocketbooks and wallets and shop and support these crafty folks! All of the classrooms will have a booth again, plus the ever popular 5

th grade Cake Walk,

and the Chili and Pie Cook-off and the Bake Sale booths. This fabulously fun-for-the-whole-family carnival is run by Parent Volunteers. We'd love to see new and familiar faces join in to help make this an awesome day for our kids and profitable for the school. Invite friends and neighbors to join in the fun. We only hold two large event fundraisers a year – Fall Festival and Artworks! So it is important that this event, in addition to being fun, also be a good money-maker. So purchase your tickets, eat lunch at the Festival, and shop the vendors!!! All the profits go back to the kids!*

I came across this article http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2011/09/01/school-lunch-bullying and thought it might be worth including in Fox Tales. It is a Canadian article, but I think it is relevant. It also applies to kids who might have food allergies and/or special diets. I didn't really think about this kind of bullying until one of my children experienced it due to a special diet. I think it might help to remind parents how to handle this kind of bullying and for parents to remind their children to treat others kindly and that bullying of any kind is not tolerated.

Our SuccessMaker Club is set to start

on the week of October 3rd. It is very

exciting to see many children sign up for

the club even though most of them

already have access to the program at

home. Please be reminded NOT to use

the program between 7:45 am. and

4:15 pm. during school days as we only

have 30 licenses.

Twelve students have been invited to

participate in the Mathletes Club, which

meets on selected Tuesdays from

October 11 to December 6. Students

were chosen based on the CST scores

both in math and language arts.

Students who are on the wait list have

an opportunity to join if those who are

invited decline the offer. The President

of CCHS MESA Club, Samuel Cappoli,

has agreed to take over my duties this

year as coach of the club.

Steve Levin’s Corner, Fan Club President…. Hi Everyone,

Usually you can count on me to ask you for money, but right now I'm asking for your time. Please come to the

monthly Fan Club meeting on Tuesday, October 18 in the Farragut library ! Fan Club is pretty informal - any

Farragut parent can show up at the meeting and vote on whatever issues come up. This month we're going to

talk about buying a second license for the Waterford reading program, and I understand there's a move afoot to

renovate the library, so we'll talk about how Fan Club can help with that. We'll talk about the FAAST class

program, and whether it should try to turn a profit or continue to aim for breaking even. Come to the meeting,

express your opinion, tell us what else Fan Club should be doing ! I hope we'll hear that the arts and music

programs are going well, and that things are happening in the computer lab. I'm sure we'll hear about how

we're doing with donations, and maybe some plans for our first fundraiser of the year. You don't have

to donate anything to Fan Club to participate in the meetings. We do need money to pay for the computer lab,

art and music programs, and all the other things Fan Club does, so please donate what you can! (You knew I was going ask you for money eventually, didn't you?)

Student Council representatives have been chosen in their

classrooms and the first meeting is October 4 at 8:00am in Room 9. The Student Council will meet the first Tuesday of each month.

We will be having a Spirit Day on the second Wednesday of

each month. The first Spirit Day will be Wed. October 12th and will be Crazy Hat Day. We will

be selling Big Sticks after school. Don't forget to wear your

Farragut Fox shirts every Friday to show your school spirit.

Welcome parent volunteers, if you would like to volunteer in the art room, and didn’t sign up at Back to School Night, see your

child’s teacher. Here are some of the projects we will be working on this year. Thank you, and looking forward to seeing you

soon!

Kindergarten: In Kindergarten, we will be learning about primary colors and mixing them to make secondary colors. We will

also learn about tints and shades, or how to make colors lighter or darker. The children will learn about collage, and make a

face collage. They will also be using letters and numbers to make art. We will learn about the printing process, and use real

leaves to make a fall leaf print project. Our clay project will be a hand print decorated with other small objects pressed into

the clay.

First grade: In first grade, we will make a pinch pot for our clay project. The children will learn about the artists Vassily

Kandinsky, Claude Monet, Georgia O’Keeffe, and David Hockney, and create projects based on some of their well know

works. They will also enjoy making projects with dinosaurs and insects.

Second grade: In second grade, the children will learn about the artists Henri Rousseau, Vincent Van Gogh, and Mary Cassatt,

and create projects based on their work. For their clay project, they will make a coil pot. The children will also learn about

how different people use masks, and make a mask out of recycled materials.

Third grade: The third graders will learn about warm and cool colors, and choose to create either a warm or cool animal

habitat. We will look at the work of artists Henri Matisse and Paul Klee and do projects based on their work. For their clay

project, we will make clay animals. They will also learn about myths and legends, and create a fantastic dragon scene.

Fourth grade: The fourth graders, in keeping with the theme of California History, the children will learn about California

landscape painters and create their own beautiful California landscape. They will also learn about self portraits, and produce a

mixed media self portrait. We will look at the famous artists, Pablo Picasso, Vassily Kandinsky, and Diego Rivera, and work on

projects based on their art. For their clay project, the children will learn about radial symmetry and create a clay plate.

Fifth grade: The fifth graders, in keeping with the theme of American History, will learn about coins and produce a relief clay

coin, with the image of a well known American person or icon. They will also make a printing project based on the American

artist Andy Warhol, and a collage project based on the African American artist Romare Bearden. We will create a beautiful

mixed media collage about the Mexican Holiday, The Day of the Dead. After looking at the exquisite drawings of Leonardo Da

Vinci, the children will practice the art of pencil drawing and create drawings of their own shoes.

ART ROOM NEWS

Major Renovations Are Taking Place in the School Garden

Here is a quick update on the changes in progress at Farragut's beloved organic garden.

After long debate, the garden crew elected to remove the star-shaped planters in the front half of the garden, in

order to build four large rectangular planters out of solid stone. Last June, we used money saved from our PTA garden

budget to buy 9,000 lbs. of Yosemite Quartzite. Over the summer, we trenched and poured rebar-reinforced concrete

footings for the new 5x13 planters that eventually will be laboriously hand-stacked and mortared.

Without a doubt, we've taken on a herculean task, but when complete (hopefully next spring), the new planters will

allow us to plant a new demonstration garden that will be even more gorgeous and inspiring than ever. The kids will love

being able to sit on the planters, in what we hope will someday become a true outdoor classroom for the school.

Farragut Artist-In-Residence

Hello Farragut Parents,

My name is Kathleen McKernin and I am the parent of

a Farragut student and secretary of the Environmental

Sustainability Advisory Committee to Culver City Unified

School District.

At the last PTA/Booster club/CCEF Coffee and Chat, we

introduced the new Green5 awareness campaign on

which the sustainability committee is working. CCUSD Superintendent, Patti Jaffe, suggested that the Green5 logo be integrated

into school "spirit wear" along with other items that are distributed at your individual schools. In response, we created an oval

shaped logo. On a second front, we are working on how to distribute re-usable water bottles with school branding and the

Green5 logo. We are still taking suggestions and input from the community, so if you have an idea, please let us know. Our chair,

Please note that this logo with quick reference code (pictured above) will be customized for your school’s specific applications

(i.e. sport uniforms, shirts, banners, etc). At the moment, the quick reference code link points to our Green5 Facebook page.

But, in the near future will link to a dedicated site. This site will provide a breakdown of the 5 core easy steps that everyone can

do at school or at home to be more sustainable. Our committee collaborated with the ROP (Regional Occupational Program) at

the high school; a student, Justin Harris, created the logo design, and is working on designing the posters, too. Below are the

Green5 easy steps toward sustainability along with information about the environmental impacts. If you would like to provide any

suggestions or share your thoughts, we will welcome any comments provided!

Five things YOU can do to make CCUSD more sustainable

1. Let the Sunshine In!

Raise shades/turn off lights

Many schools have huge windows well positioned so that direct sun does not come in, but are closed with the lights on during

the day. Studies have shown kids learn better under natural light - why not give it a try?

2. Unplug It!

Remove or unplug coffee pots/microwaves/ mini fridges

Some classes definitely need to have a refrigerator, but keep any eye out for an opportunity to share! A typical new mini fridge

uses 64.8 kWh per month, with proper venting they cost about $12- $29 per month. That is $108 to $261 over 9 months for

just one mini-fridge! Is there a coffee pot that is keeping some old coffee warm from the morning that no one is going to drink

anyway? Keep any eye out for anything warm or flashing when it is not actually in use and unplug it!

3. Too Hot? Too Cold? Just Right!

No heat/ AC on with the doors/ windows open.

Sometimes people are coming in and out of a room with heat or air conditioning turned on, and a door or window gets left open.

Lets remind each other to keep an eye out this easy money saving and climate saving opportunity.

4. B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bottle)!

Use non-disposable water bottles

The district reportedly consumes 360,000 disposable plastic water bottles per year, not including the ones kids bring from

home, or that groups purchase for events. By using a refillable, reusable bottle you will cut down on trash and plastic, but it also

saves money!

5. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE and RETHINK!

What is recyclable? What is trash? Reduce the amount of trash going to landfill.

Do you know what is recyclable at your school, in the cafeteria, in the classroom, at home? We are working on standardizing

throughout the schools, but in the mean time, everyone can recycle clean white paper as well and bottles and cans.

THREE HAIKUS FROM MS. MANGLINON’S 5TH GRADE CLASS .

PTA receives 25% of total sales to help support their numerous expenses. One For Books was a success as well, so Scholastic will donate one book to charity for every "One For Books" dollar we raised. Farragut donated about $900 to this cause. We were able to use our One For Books money to buy books for the Farragut Library and our librarian is very grateful. We had many parent volunteers who gave their time, energy and care to the parents and kids who came to visit. PTA generously donated gift certificates to the teachers so that they can continue to grow their individual class libraries. Parents and children also made valuable book donations to their teachers and the library at Farragut, which the kids will have to read very soon. I couldn't have chaired such a successful Book Fair without each and every volunteer. Thank you! I would like to give a special thank you to Eugenie Lago, Melissa Lane, Kayla Check, and Dina Wahlert - my main team of helping moms. They kept me grounded, donated their time before and during the Fair and sported all around great attitudes. You were a huge support for me. We still have an online component that we are trying for the first time this fall. If successful, we will offer this again at our next Book Fair in May. Keep reading to your kids and plan to join us again in the Spring when we have our Book Fair-Luau May 21-24th, it will be a fun treat for all.

5th Grade Activities helps plan and pay for

all the neat stuff our kids get to do during

their last year at Farragut. They go on some

great field trips like the House of Blues to

learn about the roots of American music.

There is a night of star gazing with a local

astronomy society, a tour through a print

museum, and the spectacular end-of-year

trip to Riley's Farm for a reenactment of the

American Revolution (complete with apple

pie!). We'll also help put together the class

tee shirt and the traditional tile wall. The

year ends with a blow-out pool party and

picnic at Vet's Park- and we'll think of

something to make it extra special this

year. All of these activities cost money and

it's up to the parents to raise the

funds. Thanks to those of you who

supported our Menchies event and the

Chico Bag sales. We'll be sponsoring the

concessions at Movie Nights and running

the cake walk at Fall Festival. All

fundraising ideas are welcome. Get

involved! It's fun! Please plan to join us in

making this year a memorable one for our

5th Grade Activities Chair

SEPTEMBER PTA/FAN CLUB MEETING NOTES

Bus charter costs for field trips were discussed. Costs have gone up considerably. If school buses are not available, then the school has to pay to charter buses. Increased class sizes also means additional buses may be needed for a trip.

Planners were purchases for 3-5 graders. Helps make students more organized and responsible and provides preparation for responsibilities in middle school.

Gently used books are needed for the home reading program. Chapter books for the older grades are in the most demand. Donated books can be left in office.

Teachers need carpet square samples donated that the kids can use to sit on during assemblies. Teachers thanked everyone for their beautiful new lounge.

The Home Reading program needs parent volunteers to help tally minutes.

We need a parent to shadow the current Reflections Chair and then take the program over next year.

Donated decorations are needed for the Fall Festival haunted houses.

Chairs are needed to take over several Fall Festival duties next year, including a head festival chair, food & vendors.

Entertainment is needed for the Fall Festival.

The first movie night movie will be How To Train Your Dragon.

CCEF needs more donations for their All For One campaign. Donations can be made directly to CCEF.

A Jogathon shadow to chair next year is needed this year.

It was recommended that parents work with their homeroom head parent to look at buying one larger item that their teacher could use.

Farragut Offers Students National PTA Creative Competition Opportunity

REFLECTIONS is a creative competition in the Arts sponsored by the national PTA,

providing the Farragut PTA a wonderful opportunity to offer additional arts instruction

outside of the school curriculum.

Each year the National PTA selects a theme for the program. This year's theme is

”Diversity Means......"

Student entries will be judged on how each student uses his or her artistic vision to

portray the theme in the form of art, written word and photography.

A. WORKSHOPS - During the months of October and November, the Farragut PTA will

host creative workshops after school 3.30- 5.p.m (mostly Fridays) in the following

subjects:

- Creative Writing (Oct 17 and 24): For Grades 3-5 (very helpful for 4th graders who will

be state tested in this subject). This is a very interactive 2-part workshop taught by 3rd

grade teacher Ms. Nancy Morgan. Students will be supported in how to find inspiration

and to formulate and complete a written piece.

-Visual Arts (Oct 14 grades 3-5/Oct 21 grades K-2*): This is a relaxed, creative afternoon

held in the cafeteria. (*This is also open to all grades for children of helpers setting up

Fall Festival the afternoon of the 21st.)

- Photography (Oct 28 and Nov 4): Taught by parent and Professional

Photographer, Kara Franz, this 2-part workshop for Grades 3-5 is a fabulous practical

class where students will learn how to compose and create a beautiful photograph.

Students will take photos between classes, so students need to have a camera available

at home. This is a unique opportunity for elementary aged students!

In addition to the workshops, we encourage parents to discuss this year's theme with

their children and help them think about their own, unique interpretation. One

suggestion is to set up a creative station in the home for your child to create a beautiful

piece of art, photo, poetry or prose. Each child can enter several pieces in each category,

but click the website address below to check competition guidelines before you start.

B. COMPETITION: Students are encouraged to enter their work in the Reflections

Competition. We have a school competition judged by professional and student artists

in our community. Winners in each category may progress to the City, State and even

National level of the PTA Reflections Competition.

C. EXHIBIT: At the end of November, the Reflections Exhibition will be on display in the

school cafetorium. All entries submitted will be displayed for the whole school to enjoy!

And, every entry wins a ribbon!

The Culver City PTAs and The League of Women Voters are hosting a Culver City School Board Candidates Forum on October 18th at City Hall and they need our volunteer help. Farragut Teachers’ Lounge

New Décor and Functionality!

For those of you who don't know, the

teachers’ lounge has been revamped by

parent volunteers into a pretty environ-

ment for teachers to meet, eat, and relax

in.

For the past 4 weeks, volunteer parents

have been generously donating snacks for

the teachers’ lounge, along with Keurig

individual coffee pods and tea. The

teachers are so busy and aren’t able to

zip off to a coffee shop

Please help keep the snack counter in their

new lounge full.

Things they really like:

Individual packages of: nuts, cookies,

crackers, Fig Newtons, applesauce,

peanut butter, trail mix, granola and

breakfast bars. Also apples and

Clementines are popular. Keurig coffee

pods can be found at Ralphs, Pavilion’s,

Bed, Bath and Beyond, and Costco. They

love the exotic flavors of coffee.

Just picking up one of these items the next

time you go to the store will help. Pop it

into the box marked "Teacher Snacks"

under the table in the front office at your

next drop off or pick up.

Please help to keep this going. It's an easy

and inexpensive way to show your

gratitude to our tremendous teachers.

Fox Tales generally comes out monthly during the school year. This newsletter can only be as good as the

contributions parents, teachers, students, and administrators make to it.

years, we are very pleased to have them back again this year!

Join us at the next PTA/Fan Club meeting on Tuesday, October 18 in the school library. As always, free child care and pizza are included. The meeting is at 6:30 – 8pm.

Gift Wrap Sale Extended to

Friday, October 7!

There will be a fun new booth at Fall Festival

this year - woodworking/structure building. There will be various sized

wood platforms available for the kids to glue items on their platform. With this

booth in mind, there will be a bin in the front office starting 10/6 for items like

marbles, game pieces, lego men, army men, buttons, etc. So, if you have that

chess set but only 4 pieces, or if you have random little treasures that you don't

know what to do with, please drop them in this bin. Once the bin is full it will be

removed from the front office. So, if you go in a week and it's gone, we probably

have everything we need. The items should be small enough to glue on the

platforms. The idea is for the kids to "recycle" these items and create their

own new structures.
