Dairygold’s first consignments of fodder began to arrive in Ireland earlier this month as part of an importation exercise that will continue over the autumn and winter period.

The first shipments of Alfalfa arrived from Italy and were distributed to farmers who had immediate requirements and had completed fodder budgets to calculate the full extent of their shortfall.

This is Dairygold’s second such importation operation in 2018 following the fodder crisis experienced in April and May of this year.

It comes as welcome relief to many farmers facing feed supply difficulties as a result of the prolonged summer drought period.

While there are variances of supply and demand across Dairygold’s catchment area, indications signal a potential winter feed deficit of circa 25%.

Dairygold is advising farmers to complete fodder budgets and to contact their local Area Sales Manager, Milk Advisor or local Co-Op Store for further information in relation to the fodder.

Dairygold recognises the significant financial challenges faced at farm level, due to the exceptional weather conditions over the past 12 months.

The Society has supported its Members through various initiatives including product pricing, rebates on feed and optional interest free credit. Working on your behalf, Dairygold has also recently engaged with banking institutions to ensure flexible financing options are available to farmers who face cash flow challenges over the winter period.

The following options are available:

Dairygold’s Dairyflex*In 2016, Dairygold, in conjunction with Bank of Ireland, launched Dairyflex, a flexible repayment lower cost loan facility, to support its Milk Suppliers with their Capital Investments.

Dairygold is pleased to confirm that the Dairyflex scheme has been extended so that any Dairygold Milk Supplier who applies for a Dairyflex loan, for the purposes of funding additional fodder, feed and fertiliser purchases, can now avail of a discounted rate of 3.86% (available up to 31st March 2019) and extended repayment terms up to three years. MARKET OUTLOOK AND PRICING

SUPPLY SIDE DEMAND SIDE• EU milk production increased by 1.5% in June 2018 compared to the same month in 2017.

• Notable increases in milk supply were recorded in June 2018 in Germany and Poland.

• New Zealand milk production increased by 5.6% in July 2018 compared to July 2017, with this additional supply impacting on GDT.

• US milk production increased by 0.5% in July 2018 compared to the same month in 2017.

• Australian milk production decreased in June 2018 by 1.4% compared to June 2017, due to drought.

GDT Event 219. 4th September 2018Change in GDT Price Index from previous event

-0.7%

The drought experienced over the summer months has put pressure on farmers across Europe. Despite this, milk supply has returned to normal, and in many areas has returned to levels above last year. On the world market, demand for dairy remains reasonable. Little activity and balanced stock has seen cheese remain firm, while skim has firmed on the back of limited supply availability of fresh SMP. However, EU intervention stocks continue to cloud the market. Butter markets have dipped due to unanticipated additional supply. The GDT Price Index recorded in the latest GDT auction was down 0.7% from the previous event, marking the index dropping to its lowest level since October 2016 and the sixth consecutive auction without an increase.

• China has discontinued the release of import data making it difficult to track the level of demand in the market.

• Japan, Russia, the US and South Korea were the highest importers of cheese during the period January-May 2018.

• Mexico (+19%) was the main importer of SMP January-April 2018. Algeria (+32%) and Egypt (+45%) have shown significant increases in SMP imports.

• Hong Kong increased WMP imports by 50% January-May 2018, 59% of which was of EU origin.

Dairygold’s Beef ExpoOn Wednesday 12th September, over 500 people packed into Corrin Event Centre, Fermoy for Dairygold’s Beef Expo.

The 2nd annual Beef Expo saw farmers from all over Munster attend to gain valuable insight into animal health, markets, prices and customer requirements. These knowledge transfer events provide the best and most up to date technical advice demonstrating our Co-Operative ethos of maximising returns for our farmers.

The event’s key note speaker Sean Coffey, CEO, Kepak Meat Division, described how consumer trends, ideal price points and product size are the key drivers in the beef market.

He stated that it was of the utmost importance that beef farmers and processors work together to produce the products that the consumer needs in an ever-changing market. Mr Coffey and all other speakers acknowledged how the weather-

related difficulties have severely impacted on Irish livestock farmers and prices this year.

Fellow speaker Joe Burke, Beef and Livestock Manager from Bord Bia, discussed the markets and prices for the year, stating that while the UK is the top market for Irish meat, making up 70% of the UK’s beef imports, the Chinese market is a key opportunity for growth which Bord Bia is focussed on.

Dairygold Nutritionist Colman Purcell provided expert advice on nutrition and finishing at this year’s event, with Dr. Doreen Corridan from Munster AI also speaking at the knowledge-transfer event in relation to animal health.

The Beef Expo also featured a live grading demonstration showing how to finish cattle of different breeds to meet the best market specification.

New Agricultural Sustainability, Support and Advisory Program (ASSAP)to improve water quality

Dairygold wins Company of the Year

The cause of water quality issues, whether it’s in an area of ground-water, in a tributary or in a lake, is not always easy to find and fix.

Many factors can contribute to water pollution and it’s only when all factors are considered and by collaborating with others that improvements can be achieved. This is the holistic approach being taken in the 2018-2021 River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) and the reason why the new ASSAP has been launched.

ASSAP is made up of 30 specialist advisors – 20 Teagasc and 10 Co-Op advisors, who will work closely with the EPA and County Council’s Local Authority Water, Science and Advisory Team (LAWSAT) to tackle water pollution.

As part of the RBMP, 192 ‘Areas for Action’ have been identified as needing improved water quality. The LAWSAT and ASSAP advisors will provide advice to all land owners within these areas. LAWSAT will hold community-based information meetings as well as river walks open to the public, while ASSAP advisors will hold information meetings with farmers and agri-related persons.

Co-Op advisors will visit all dairy farmers and Teagasc advisors will meet with all other farm enterprises in these areas.

Once within each ‘Area for Action’, the advisors will carry out an initial ‘ground scientific assessment’ by walking the rivers and carrying out tests to identify the likely causes of pressure on the water chemistry in the area.

The information will then be relayed to those farming in the area.

All discussions with stakeholders will be confidential and while the implementation of mitigation measures is voluntary, we would welcome the participation and co-operation of all.

If you wish to know more about the location of the ‘Areas for Action’ a full list and map is available at www.catchments.ie/areas-for-action/. All suppliers affected will be informed by letter prior to any visit.

Suppliers will be kept up-to-date in relation to any related public meetings or river walks taking place within their area.

Dairygold Food Ingredients was crowned Company of the Year at the 2018 Food and Drink Business Awards held on Wednesday, 5th September. Dairygold was selected as the overall winner from a shortlist of companies that included Dunnes Stores, Britvic Ireland, Manor Farm and Keogh’s Crisps. Dairygold also scooped the prize of Dairy Manufacturing Company of the year at the awards.

Conor Galvin, Head of Commercial Dairygold said: “We are really pleased to have won this award which is testament to the dedication of our suppliers for producing milk of the highest quality and to our colleagues across our business for their vision and commitment to excel, innovate and achieve excellence in everything we do.”

Dairy Health Certificate 2019 - Reminder

Since the 1st January 2018, all milk suppliers must be and remain SDAS certified.

KEY STEPS TO TAKE WHEN SCHEDULING THE SDAS AUDIT:

All suppliers will need to be mindful of their certification expiry date. Milk suppliers should aim to schedule their audit at least 1 month before their current certification expiry date.

Completing the SDAS audit well in advance of the certification expiry date should allow suppliers adequate time to close out any issues that may need to be addressed following the audit and to achieve certification.

For further information about this or any other SDAS related issue, please contact either your local milk advisor or the Dairygold Milk Advisory Helpdesk on 1890-200-840.

Each herd that supplies milk must be certified by your vet annually to meet specific animal health requirements as specified by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM).

These certificates must be submitted to Dairygold each year. The recommended time to certify your herd is at your Annual Herd Test which enables you and your vet to

fully complete and sign the form while inspecting the cows.

Please send the completed 2019 Certificate by the 30th of November 2018 to your local Milk Advisor or to:

Milk Advisory Department, Dairygold Co-Op, Clonmel Road, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork.

If you have misplaced your blank Dairy Health Certificate which was sent to you earlier this year, please contact Dairygold Milk Advisory Helpdesk on 1890 200 840.

NOTE: Dairygold will not be in a position to collect milk from your holding from 1st January 2019 unless it has received the fully completed certificate.
