Industry News Industry News

Monday – Spring has sprung, well almost. While the hedgerows are greening up and the crops wake up from what has been a challenging winter for most of them, there are those who dutifully insist on not casting a clout until May is out. And that includes John-Boy whose dress code only rarely sees him out of wellingtons and his donkey jacket before June. Attire which lays beneath these key garments probably remains in situ the year round and are not so much replaced but topped up as wear and tear takes its course.

Tuesday – Out with the drill. It’s a fine sunny day and there’s a smattering of dust in the air as the coulters scythe their way through what is a perfect spring barley seed tilth – a well weathered, warm crumbly texture dry enough to fall off the end of your boot. There’s also that fantastic earthy smell which, like no other, always tells you when the soil is being worked well in first class conditions. Thought about the time we always had someone riding on the drill to keep an eye on things and stop the drive when headland turns are made. It was the trailing drag harrows which hopefully kicked across on headland turns that made the job really interesting.

Wednesday – Haigue out with the sprayer, John-Boy’s drilling and I’m top dressing some winter wheat. At least, we were, until just about lunch time when the rain arrived. Can there ever be any other industry which with, a downfall of rain, needs to come to an abrupt halt? Grave diggers come to mind but that’s about all. What we have now are unfinished fields, sheets over trailers and tractors under the barn. And it’s a fair bet John-Boy has forgotten which bout he was on for the tramline spacing.

Thursday - Overnight rain means we are in the barn. Which, bearing in mind how much spring planting we have to do this year is frustrating, to say the least. And if black-grass isn’t brought under control, it’s likely we shall be planting ever larger acreages in the spring. In many ways though, it’s a problem we have brought on ourselves through using cropping regimes that went against traditional farming practices – practices which have ensured soils remained in good heart, compaction was minimal and no one had even heard of black-grass.

Friday – A drying wind, bright sunshine and we are away again. The whole countryside was alive today with tractors working everywhere. The clatter of harrows, the chatter of coulters and the steady grinding of the Cambridge rolls all accompanied with the sweet sound of tractor engines – it was a symphony in the making. And it felt good. Could have been slightly better though if John-Boy hadn’t run out of seed half way down the last bout which meant I had to stop what I was doing and go and find an extra bag of seed for him and just as I’d sorted him out, Haigue called to say his water bowser needed filling. I think it’s time for one of our ‘who’s responsible for what’ meetings.

Saturday – Pulled the curtains aside this morning and across the meadows a misty haze catches the sun’s beams as they shine down onto the dewy grass; lambs have fun frolicking around an old water trough and, closer to home a cheerful, contented Pedro is already out for his morning stroll around his paddock. I lifted up the window, leaned out and breathed in the morning air and thought this is alright. This is how it should be. And then wife inquired if I was going to stand there all day and whether or not she was getting a cup of tea this morning.

Built to mark JCB’s 70th year of production, these colourful limited edition machines – the Platinum Edition 3CX backhoe loaders – have rolled of the line at JCB’s World Headquarters at Rocester, Staffs. The company says it will be making just 70 of these machines, one to mark each year that JCB has been in business, and they will be received by customers as far afield as Australia, as well as the UK, France, Spain and Russia.

70th Anniversary For JCB

Use of Camso rubber tracks for John Deere’s Gator utility vehicles have been approved in Europe – they have been used in the US for a number of years. Designed to extend their operational use, the Camso tracks reduce ground pressure to less than one psi, claims Deere. The tracks take less than two hours to install with the wheels removed and require no other modifications. Track widths are 318mm wide in the front and 356mm at the rear, and the system costs about £3750.

On Track With John Deere

Winner of Lamma’s Innovation award for ‘Best Product or Innovation in Livestock Equipment’ was Bryce Suma Postdrivers. The company had to compete with nine other short listed entries in this category. For the show itself, Jock Bryce says his company sold three machines off the stand and delivered a further shortly after. Pictured, from left to right, is the winning team: Andrew, Jock and Stuart Bryce.

Bryce Scoops AwardTRACTOR SALES: 2015 results announced

The Agricultural Engineers Association has released a breakdown of the tractor registrations for 2015 and, as one would expect in a year which saw supressed sales on a scale few have seen before, they do not make for good reading.

A regional analysis of registrations revealed that all areas of the UK experienced reduced numbers with the highest being registered in the East Midlands (-29.2%), Northern Ireland (-26.3%) and the North West (-18.2%). Not far behind is Eastern England (-17.8%), Wales (-15.4%) and the West Midlands and the Yorkshire & Humberside regions (each -14.2%).

Overall then, with an end of year total of 10,842 units

sold (-12.8%), it is a pretty bleak result all round and 2016 does not appear to have got off to a better start. For the month of January, AEA figures reveal that 586 units were sold which is a fall of 10.7% on January 2015.

The fall-off in sales during 2015 is also reflected in the AEA’s horsepower analysis with drops being recorded in all power bands albeit only slightly in the top end 241hp+ band. The largest decrease was in the mid-range bands with 141hp – 160hp seeing a 17.2% fall in the number of tractors sold and the other five power bands spanning the 51hp to 240h power range each experiencing falls of between 12-13%.

John Deere tops sales leagueThe keenly awaited UK sales league for tractor manufacturers has now been announced and, as ever, it is one-year-old – strange European Union rules insist that the more immediate figures for 2015, which most other European countries have access to are denied to UK readers.

Even so, they make interesting reading although after last year’s results, one could assume that 2015’s will create even greater interest when they become available.

Topping the UK league is John Deere which takes a 29.5% market share and close behind at 28.8% share is CNH with its New Holland (19.6%) and Case IH (9.2%) brands. AGCO is in third place with 21.8% market share for its MF (12.3%), Fendt (6.1%) and Valtra

(3.4%) brands. Claas has 5.7% share, Kubota 4.7%, Agri Argo 2.9% (McCormick 2.1% and Landini 0.8%), Same Deutz-Fahr 2.2%, Zetor 1.0% JCB 0.9% and others, 2.5%.

Those who need the full picture will need to know that MF includes Challenger, McCormick includes Valpadana and New Holland includes Steyr.

Flood damage costs revealedA survey by the Cumbria Farm Flood Action Group has highlighted the cost of recent flooding in the Cumbria area. The Group contacted about 1000 farmers, 144 of which reported a collective £1.7 million in losses. A more detailed survey of 220 farmers revealed that 63% lost sections of watercourse bank sides, 37% have lost walls, 145 have lost hedgerows, 53% reported river stone/gravel deposit and 22% had

land slips. In addition, 38 farmers reported over a total of 700 sheep deaths and 16 farmers have a total of 189 sheep missing.

Commenting on these results, the NFU’s David Hall said: “This survey shows us clearly the impact of these storms and what farmers face in terms of immediate recovery. In the longer term, farmers face higher costs as stock will need to be fed with purchased fodder.”

Kuhn and Young Farmers to produce ‘Dream Machine’A competition organised by Kuhn Farm Machinery and the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC), will see Young Farmers being given the chance to show how innovative they can be in producing a ‘Dream Machine’.

The ‘Dream Machine’ design competition asks Young Farmers to submit ideas or concepts for a new farm machine which could be used in the agricultural industry.

Four winners, based

on the age of entrants, will win an expenses-paid trip to Kuhn’s headquarters in France and its manufacturing site at Saverne near Strasbourg.

Competitors will also be invited to present their Dream Machine concepts to the company’s head designers.

Industry News

Lemken stays strong

Lemken reports it has maintained a strong business position in what has been a difficult financial environment. The company has achieved net profits of €327 million, a decrease of 4.7% when compared to last year.

In 2015, the Group sold a total of 13,370 implements with ploughs and stubble cultivation equipment combining to make up the largest proportion of 46% (23% each).

Seed drills took 25% of the production total and crop protection 5%.

In terms of markets, the low income situation in

Germany, France and the UK has led to a subdued demand with the company’s domestic German market decreased to €90 million. Further afield, results have been more encouraging with increases recorded in Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

Not so in Russia though, where political restrictions and currency movement have had a detrimental effect on sales.

For 2016 Lemken says it is expecting a slight increase in business volume and is planning to invest further despite current market weakness.

Tenmat and SpaldingsAn agreement between Tenmat and Spaldings will see the aftermarket sales of Ferobide tungsten weldable wear tiles into the UK market solely through Spaldings.

Tenmat, which produces the tiles, points out that

tungsten carbide has long been the benchmark for wear resistant materials. The company says that Ferobide now allows farmers and contractors to weld the tiles to suit their own needs.

Dispose of plastic waste legally or face huge finesFarmers and contractors should dispose of their waste plastic legally, says Mark Webb of recycling company, FarmXS. Failure to comply with the law, which requires waste plastic to be disposed of through a licensed business, can result in fines of up to £50,000 and payment for environmental clean-up work.

He points out that an Oxfordshire company was recently fined £20,000 plus costs for illegally storing, treating and burning

waste. The firm was also prosecuted for operating a skip hire business illegally from the same site and allowing the disposal of large quantities of tyres.

“All farmers have a duty of care to ensure the person they give their waste to is licensed and deals with it properly,” says Mr Webb. “They should make sure they see a copy of the license and receive a waste transfer note which can be checked by farm assurance schemes.”

No disruption from HS2, says NFUThe HS2 rail line is set to have an impact on hundreds of farmers along its route, points out the NFU which believes that there must be plans in place to enable affected farmers to continue to run their businesses.

“Our top priority is that farm businesses are treated fairly and are able to operate as normal,” says NFU President, Meurig Raymond. “We are still waiting for satisfactory assurances on crucial

points and we put these to the MPs on the HS2 Select Committee. Some farmers will see their agricultural buildings and farmhouses demolished by the project, so planning permission for replacement buildings is essential.”

Mr Raymond adds that HS2 must recognise the importance of farming and implement a duty of care to the farm businesses set to be affected by the railway’s construction.

Pottinger and TH White in distribution arrangementPottinger has appointed TH White ProAgri to represent the Pottinger franchise from TH White’s Frome and Stockbridge branches in Wiltshire and Hampshire. It is a move which will see the dealer representing the full Pottinger grassland and tillage equipment range

with immediate effect.According to Pottinger

UK’s general manager, Shaun Groom, the feed-back from existing local customers has been very positive. He says he is looking forward to growing the number of Pottinger users in the area with new business partner, TH White.

Kubota expands marketing teamKubota has announced it has made two new appointments to its marketing team. John Johnson is now marketing support manager and Pavlos Panteleimontis, is marketing administrator. Both join the marketing team from an

internal re-structure and will work alongside Karen Tipping, the company’s marketing manager. Kubota reports that, in ten months, it has increased its marketing team from one to five people.

New Service Partner for HardiHardi has appointed SprayLine UK as its new Service Partner for Norfolk and the surrounding area. Based at West Raynham Business Park, just outside

Fakenham, SprayLine is reported to be off to a good start having sold a Navigator Echo and a Master mounted sprayer in its first week.

upwards by 15mm to avoid contact with neighbouring discs. The discs used on the SmartCut bed are a quick-change design to minimise down-time in the field.

Krone silage mowers equipped with the SmartCut bed cover farmer and contractor requirements from the rear-mounted ActiveMow series to front and rear triples, and the options also include mower-conditioners and mowers equipped with the Collect swathing attachment. Working widths for the recently introduced small to medium capacity ActiveMow series are from 2.05 to 3.61m, and they are available only as plain mowers and for rear mounting. There is a parking option that allows storage with the bed in the upright

position. The EasyCut range also features the SmartCut bed, but

working widths are from 2.8 to 4.0m and mowers are offered for front or rear mounting, plain and mower-conditioner models are available, and the EasyCut range can also be linked to operate as double or triple combinations for increased output. Rear mower widths are 2.8 to 4.0m, or up to 3.2m for the steel-tined conditioner version, front widths are up to 3.6m and EasyCut based triples have working widths up to 9.7m.

Krone www.krone-uk.com

A special feature on the Krone range of silage mowers is the SmartCut bed design using discs arranged in pairs that turn either towards or away from each other, with the overlap arranged to provide an optimum flow of cut material in heavy crops while achieving a stripe-free finish. The welded bed construction is designed to give a long working life and the discs are powered through a gear drive.

Also included in the SmartCut bed design is SafeCut protection from damage caused by stones and other solid objects, based on a shear pin while the disc can rise

Krone Silage MowersEagle eyed readers will have noticed the absence of a major supplier from the mower feature in our February issue. Here we put the record straight:

Two crisp and clear days for the 35th Lamma Show brought a brief respite from the wind and rain to the East of England Showground, as 40,000 visitors from across the UK, and further afield, browsed over 850 stands displaying the latest in machinery, crop protection equipment and supplies. With solid ground underfoot and the sun shining, here we report on new and interesting products from the exhibitors.

LAMMA

Albutt 01242 622904Albutt has added a 12ft, 7.39m3 capacity model to their heavy-duty

buck rake range. Designed for higher horsepower tractors – 160hp if rear mounted and 180hp on the front linkage – the 12ft attachment has 14, 65” Hardox steel tines welded into a 10mm heavy-duty box section. The see-through gate has been strengthened to provide more pushing power. There are five mounting points on the three-point linkage, and

quick hitch brackets for loading shovels are available.

Bomford Turner 01789 773383Bomford Turner’s ground driven cultivator range, the Dyna-Drive, has been expanded to include two new folding models in 4m and 6m working widths. Requiring 32hp per metre, the front rotor tines dig and lift the soil, while the second rotor, driven three times faster via a heavy-duty Duplex chain drive, breaks up and firms to create a fine tilth ideal for the chemical control of blackgrass. Working at 7-10mph, Bomford states the 4m model can cover 40ha an hour.

Amazone Ltd 01302 751200Amazone’s AmaSelect consists of a nozzle carrier with four outlets so the system, apart from providing 50cm part-width sections for more accurate section control, can be automatically controlled by GPS-Switch. The company states that a chemical saving of up to 8% can be made using the system, and any number of part-width sections can be specified. In addition to AmaSelect, Amazone has also launched AmaSwitch for electric individual nozzle switching, providing 50cm spacing for customers who do not require remote controlled electric switch over.

J.C. Machinery 01260 224568First developed in 1994, Lamma saw the introduction of the latest Vredo Trac specialist systems vehicle – the 450hp VT4546. Currently four variants are available all of which feature four-wheel and crab steer as standard. For slurry spreading a mounted polyester 19,500-litre tank, or 27,000-litre and 25,000-litre tanker trailers are available. Finally, a 20-tonne solids spreader can be fitted. The VT4546 is load cell ready and is designed for optimum weight distribution to reduce soil compaction.

Kuhn Farm Machinery 01952 239300Kuhn launched the second generation of its Axis fertiliser spreader

range. The Axis .2 series includes four models: the 20.2, with 28-36m working width and 1000- to 2300-litre hopper capacity; the 30.2 and

40.2 (28-42m, 3000-3200 litres) and the 50.2 (18-50m, 3200-4200 litres). Electronic Mass Control (EMC) meters flow by measuring the torque of each disc then automatically adjusting the application rate

individually. EMC can be specified with mechanical or hydraulic drive. All models feature variable working width technology as standard,

controlled manually or automatically via GPS.

Krone 0113 2878 800While Krone has offered a tandem axle on their Comprima range of round balers for some time – standard on wrapper combinations, optional on other machines - the growing mindfulness surrounding ground compaction saw the company use Lamma 2016 as an opportunity to build awareness of this option. Without affecting the proven features of the range, the tandem axle provides improved operator comfort on the road and on rough terrain, as well as spreading the weight of the unit to reduce compaction.

Lamma 2016

Kongskilde 01263 713291Expanding its range of trailed forage harvesters, Kongskilde introduced the FCT1260. Based on the larger FCT 1460, the 1260 features a 2.7m pick-up with hydraulic roller press. The feed rollers are shaft driven, with a selectable speed for varying chop length, and the cutting rotor has been redesigned. A new drawbar allows the forager to be operated in line or offset, and an optional hydraulically folding chute is available. The transport width is 3m, despite the wide pick-up, for travel along narrow roadways.

Knight Farm Machinery 01780 722200Knight launched a new self-propelled sprayer at Lamma, built in collaboration with JCB and based on the company’s 4000 Series Fastrac tractor. Alterations included moving the cab to the front, taking advantage of the panoramic rear screen and enabling the fitting of spray tanks up to 4000 litres with 40m booms. The mechanical, CVT transmission provides road speeds of 60kph while the four-wheel steering system and variable height suspension maintains a tight turning circle. For row crop work 380 95 R46 tyres are fitted or floatation tyres for low ground pressure work.

McConnel 01584 873131Available on the flagship 85-series Power Arms, McConnel’s new Tuffcut flailhead features a 65% stronger lug design and a larger diameter rotor which is up to 75% stiffer. Designed to withstand contractors’ busy workloads, the Tuffcut has a new hydraulic front hood with a larger ingress for improved flow of material and a hydraulic roller for a quick switch over between hedge cutting and verge mowing. Heavy-duty F-16 T-flails are fitted as standard and the flailhead is available in working widths of 1.2m and 1.6m.

Lemken 01379 855449Lemken has introduced two new Juwel mounted reversible ploughs with lower specifications to meet customer demand. The 3-7 furrow

8M and 8MV models feature hydraulic reversing and mechanically adjustable pitch. Both use DuraMaxx bodies to significantly extend the working life of the plough. Four working widths can be set, with

an infinitely variable hydraulic option available. The skimmers are adjusted without tools, while hydraulically suspended, mechanical

Uni wheels control depth and fast changeover between working and road positions.

McConnel 01584 873131McConnel has launched a new mounting system for its Power Arm

range – the four-point hitch stabiliser. The new system uses traditional three-point linkage mounting but also connects to the tractor’s pick-

up hitch for extra stability. The mounting system is easy to fit and is compatible with any tractor

with a pick-up hitch, nor does it require any additional brackets. The four-point hitch stabiliser can be retrofitted and is available for

McConnel’s 55-series, 60-series, 65-series and 70-series Power Arms.

Lely 01480 226800The Lely Welger RP 160 V variable chamber round baler range will replace the 415 and 445 series. The V Classic baler has a basic setup suited to dryer crops, while the V Xtra features a heavy-duty, power split gearbox and can be optioned with the Xtracut chopping system. Pick-ups of 2m, 2.25m and 2.4m are available while the Constant Pressure System produces uniform bale shape and density. New for the range is the E-Link control unit and E-link Pro terminal, both based on ISOBUS.

Philip Watkins 01709 798522A new 7m trailed press was launched by Philip Watkins,

requiring a tractor of 140-270hp, with a choice of three rows of rigid tines, or two rows of spring tines. A hydraulic levelling board is included as standard, followed by either two 600mm diameter DD rolls or a single 700mm DD consolidator. Depth

and pitch are adjusted via a turnbuckle system. For transport the unit hydraulically folds to 2.95m, and is fitted with hydraulic

brakes, a floating frame and flotation tyres as standard.

Opico 01778 421111Following the success of the mounted He-Va Combi-Disc, Opico has launched a 3m trailed model to limit the weight on the back of the tractor, reducing the horsepower requirement. It features five hydraulic reset subsoiler legs and 510mm scalloped Sabre discs which are hydraulically adjustable, to work to a depth of 125mm. The angle of the discs automatically adjusts depending on depth. Consolidation is performed by a V profile press roller. A seeder kit can be added for cover crop or oilseed rape and, new for 2016, minimal disturbance disc openers can be optioned.
