OWATONNA — It’s a good time to be a farmer, but that doesn’t mean that farming doesn’t present its own set of is-sues and problems, said Steve Guenthner, the show manager of the North America Farm and Power Show.

And, he said, that many of the exhibi-tors at the expo, as well as those who are leading informational seminars, will be on hand to address some of the issues and problems facing farmers.

“I’ve been in the trade show business for 20-plus years,” Guenthner said, adding that he has seen the increased success of farmers over those years. “Farming has been good, there’s now way around it.”

Among the things that has helped farmers is the increased demand for American agricultural products, he said.

“We have grown our foreign market extremely well, “ Guenthner said. “China, Japan, India — they love our corn. ey love our beans. at’s why our prices are good.”

ough farming has been good in re-

cent years, there are still issues that farm-ers face, Guenthner said. Most recently, farmers have had to contend with the con-tinuing e ects of the drought on farming.

Guenthner, who does trade shows

across the country, especially in the Mid-west, said he recently held an expo in To-peka, Kan. — an area that recently has been the bene ciary of large winter storms that have dumped Minnesota-like snow

on the ground, much of which will soak into ground. at’s the sort of moisture that farmers in that drought-stricken can use, he said.

At the same time, while he was at that

expo, Guenthner talked to one farmer who was struggling with having winter water for his cattle.

“He told me that he had 40 ponds and 39 are dry,” Guenthner said. “ at’s a seri-ous problem.”

And the drought situation is becoming increasing serious in the Upper Midwest as well, said Guenthner, who Tradexpos is based in nearby Austin.

“We’ve gotten by the last several years,” he said of the Minnesota drought situa-tion, “but we need moisture.”

With that in mind, two of the free seminars on Saturday will address issues related to the ongoing drought — speci -cally, irrigation.

“The dry weather of last season now has more farmers across the corn belt considering the economic benefits of additional water for their crops,” says the description of one of the seminars. “Learn more regarding the practice of irrigation in Minnesota, including to-tal acres, equipment, required permits, and more.”

The seminar, slated for 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, will be con-ducted by Alan Peterson and Jerry Wright of the Irrigators Association of Minnesota and will include time for questions and answers. Like all the seminars at the expo, this one will be free.

There also will be representatives from various seed companies at the expo. Many of the seed companies represented have been developing seeds that not only are drought-re-sistant, but are disease-resistant as well, Guenthner said.

“Their yields are unbelievable,” he said.

Of course, he said, there will be other vendors at the expo as well, including representatives from all of the major farm implement com-panies as well as short-line exhibi-tors and the seed companies. The exhibitor space is “sold out again,” Guenthner said, with 341 vendors signed up to be there. Many of the exhibitors have been at the North

The exhibitor space is “sold out again,” Guenthner said, with 341 vendors signed up to be there. Many of the exhibitors have been at the North

America Farm and Power Show all 11 years that the show has been in Owatonna.

“We could have another 100 ex-

hibitors, if we had the space,” Guen-thner said.

The nice thing about having re-gional shows, such as this one, Guen-

thner said, is the relationships that develop between the vendors and the people who attend the show.

“The dealers know the farmers

and know what they need,” he said. “They know them by name and know their operation.”

This year marks the 11th year that Tradexpos will bring the North Ameri-ca Farm and Power Show to Owatonna — a relationship that has been good for the parent company of the show and good for the City of Owatonna.

Guenthner first brought the expo to Steele County after having held it in the Cities — a place that he has said simply wasn’t conducive to bringing in the sort of clientele that typically attends such a show.

The North America Farm and Power Show, which showcases cur-rent trends in agriculture, will run March 14, 15 and 16 in the Four Seasons Centre. The show’s hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission to the expo and parking on the Steele County Fairgrounds are free.

One of the materials we produce at our quarries is agricultural lime; which we use to spread on elds to increase the crop yields and income for farmers. Agricultural lime neutralizes the acid in the soil; which increases the crop yield. Excessive soil acidity can have a disastrous affect on crop production. Stussy Construction and Paulson Rock Products can spread lime on elds at a minimum rate of 2 ton per acre; but we can apply more as needed. We use spreader trucks to apply the lime to the elds; the trucks haul approximately 15 tons per load. Please call Stussy Construction and Paulson Rock Products for more information.

Call 507-635-3441 for details about our Agricultural Lime Spreading.

Whatever you need to store around the farm, we have the building to do it.

A Star Building designed to your load requirements. Our buildings

feature a clear span rigid frame design that eliminates the need for interior columns,

giving you utilization of every foot of oor space.
