WE NEED A POSTEN EDITOR – WHY NOT YOU?Marianne and Bill Nesse

We’ve enjoyed our time as editors, but now it is timefor someone else to make the most of this opportunity.Healthy lodges pass responsibilities around among theirmembers – new ideas can be invigorating! Each editorcontributes their own unique voice in each issue ofPosten, and can really make an impact on the lodge.

Tusen Takk to everyone who has had a hand inproviding information and photos to include in Stein Fjell’sPosten. It has been a pleasure to work with all of you overthe years and we appreciate the support we’ve beengiven. Sharing interesting information about Norway andits people has been fun. We’ve learned a great deal alongthe way, and, given how green we were when we began,we feel certain someone else can do it, too.

Please sign up for the editor’s position during ourupcoming elections. We will help with the transition andcreate the 2014 Directory, but as of January, will no longerbe editors. Stein Fjell needs you to ensure continuouspublication of our newsletter.

GRATULERER MED DAGEN!

POSTEN NORGEBill Nesse

Norway’s postal system began in 1647 when theprivate company Postvesenet was established by HenrikMorian, with the blessing of the Dano-Norwegian KingChristian IV. It remained private until 1719, when it wastaken over by the state. Postvesenet distributed mailthroughout the country, but local mail distribution re-mained in private hands in many locations. In 1888, thestate took over all mail distribution and it has remained astate monopoly since then.

The name was changed to Postverket in 1933. In1996, the organization was incorporated as Posten NorgeBA, a stock company, with the Norwegian governmentholding all the stock. Posten Norge also owns or partlyowns a number of logistics/shipping firms, many of whichhave their own subsidiaries. Formation of Posten Norge asa stock company was supposed to be in anticipation ofderegulation of postal service, but the changes that wouldallow for competition haven’t been adopted yet. WhilePosten Norge has a monopoly on mail, it must competewith UPS, FedEx, and other services for parcel delivery.

There are 30 post offices in Norway directly operatedby Posten Norge, and about 1400 Post i Butikk stations located in various stores throughout the country. Thesefacilities are similar to the contract postal stations foundin banks and stores in the United States. In 2012 PostenNorge delivered 37.3 million packages and 2.2 billionletters.

About 1600 different stampshave been issued by Postvesenet andits successors; the first, at right, wasissued on January 1, 1855. A standarddesign in use since 1871 shows a posthorn and crown. Stamps with this

basic design canbe purchasedtoday. Until2008, the posthorn and crownwas the centralelement in thePosten Norge logo. The current logo is

on the masthead.Over 150 different people have graced Norway’s

stamps. The first was King Oscar I in 1856. Except forroyalty, Fridtjof Nansen has been on the most stamps.Queen Maud was the first woman to appear. Stampsmarking royal events are a staple, and new stamps havejust been issued to celebrate the 40 birthdays of Crownth

Prince Haakon on July 20 and his wife, Crown PrincessMette-Marit, on August 19 . Other stamps issued at theth

same time are one with Haakon, Mette-Marit, and theirchildren, and another with the royal line of succession –King Harald V, Crown Prince Haakon, and Princess IngridAlexandra. All these stamps are valued at NOK 9.50

(~$1.60), and good for first class postage within Norway.

True to Norway’s egalitarian heritage, now everyonecan be on their own personal postage stamp. Just providethe photo or other image, and Posten Norge will quicklyprint stamps using that image. The cost for 20 of thesestamps is 280 kroner or about $2.35 per stamp – apremium of 75¢ over regular stamps. If you want to senda post card, you can create your own using your computeror smart phone. Just provide a photo, your message, andthe name and address to whom it is to be sent. PostenNorge will print the postcard and deliver it in Norway for

20 kroner (~$4). For stamp collectors, Posten Norge offers First Day

Covers (stamps postmarked on the first day of issue), andstamp yearbooks that contain a whole year of stamps. They even sell used stamps.

Sons of Norway has a long-standing connection withstamp collecting through TUBFRIM, and we are the largestsource of stamps outside of Norway for this fine organiza-tion. TUBFRIM was established in 1928 by Nesbyen (Nor-way) Postmaster Ditlef Frantzen, to collect and sell usedstamps, and use the proceeds to aid the eradication of tu-berculosis (TB) among Norwegian children. Today, profitsare used to help children and youth with disabilities, children and youth with handicaps in Norway, and tofinance efforts to eradicate TB. Be sure to cut out stampsfrom letters you receive (leave a half-inch margin) and putthem in the TUBFRIM container at each lodge meeting.
