Welcome to October on the Far South Coast, peak time in the annual southern whale migration. There have been sightings a -plenty; each year the numbers get better and better.
There are several choices for whale watching; you can go out on a whale watching cruise, a charter boat, fly along the coast in a plane or hang out on the nearest headland or cliff top. If you're at the beach and you're really lucky, you can sometimes see whales just 100 metres or so offshore!
The Far South Coast is one of the best places to go whale watching in Australia; you don't have to travel far at all to see humpback whales plus other species including southern right, minke and false killer whales.
The Eden Whale Festival on November 1st and 2nd celebrates the importance
of whales to the Eden community over the centuries - details on pages 2 and 6.
There are lots of other things to do this October apart from whale-watching. Moruya's greatly expanded jazz festival, now known as Granite Town, features jazz, food and funk; see page 27 for information about the events on over the weekend.
The wonderful Montreal Goldfield celebrates the 134th anniversary of the Bermagui Mystery at its Heritage Day on October 11th, plus there's gold panning to try, a Poets Corner and billy tea and damper cooked on the coals for afternoon tea - yum! You'll find details on page 21.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.
Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.
A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.
You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.
Eden is now famous as the number one whale watching destination in Australia, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Cat Balou Cruises have won numerous awards for their whale watching cruises.

Festival celebrates the significance of whales to EdenThe countdown is on for the Eden Whale Festival and the migration is shaping up to be the biggest, and longest, in 50 years.Earlier this year, Eden was named the nation’s top whale watching destination by Australian Geographic because of its closeness to the whale’s path, its remarkable maritime history and its unspoilt wilderness.The whales have been dropping by for months already, and now there are daily reports of sightings and close encounters with humpbacks, southern rights and even the occasional orca and false killer whale.
Of course whale watching is a key feature of the long-running festival. There will be lots of guided shore based whale watching experiences freely available all weekend and some of Australia’s best whale watching charters operating from port.
This year the festival, a finalist in the South Coast Tourism Awards for 2014, has a great variety of attractions and guided experiences that are sure to leave you breathless.Replica sailing ship, HM Bark Endeavour, will soon set sail for Eden to travel south with the migration. She is due at port on Friday, October 30 and will be open to the public all weekend.Wild About Whales cetacean expert Geoff Ross will host several shore based whale watching experiences from Eden’s panoramic headlands. He and Festival friends at the National Parks and Wildlife Service will have all the knowledge and gear to help participants become an expert too, including a boat tour to the historic Davidsons Whaling Station.Saturday, November 1 is all about entertainment at Snug Cove. The action begins with the 10am street parade followed by non-stop performances, workshops, live music, local produce, mini-adventures and more, culminating in the Festival’s famous fireworks and Whale Song gig at dusk.Sunday, November 2 is the time to relax and discover Eden’s other side – its unique maritime history, fresh local produce and engaging art exhibitions. The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.
Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.
Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping, attractions and plenty of accommodation choices.
Merimbula has a long history of
human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.
There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.
Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.
There are plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose from too.
During the whale season there are several ways you can go and watch whales - from the headlands, with the boat charters, or by air.
Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

Whale Watching in MerimbulaThe Far South Coast is one of the best places in Australia to go whale watching; you don't have to travel very far to find whales, and once you find them, chances are you'll see more than one species. Mental as Anything play Merimbula RSLWhen four blokes from art school got together to play a gig in exchange for free beer back in 1977, little did they know that almost 40 years later Mental as Anything would still be performing.The band has been an ever-present part of the Australian music scene for decades, with hits such as The Nips Are Getting Bigger, If You Leave Me Can I Come Too? and Live It Up.They've toured extensively overseas, achieving success in the US, Canada, Germany, Scandinavia and the UK.They've even had group art exhibitions; in 1990 then deputy Prime Minister Paul Keating, opened the Mentals'
second exhibition, with works by all five band members attracting huge critical acclaim. Mental as Anything were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2009.There have been a few line-up changes over the years, but Greedy Smith, Martin Plaza and Reg Mombassa (aka Chris O'Doherty) still form the heart and soul of the band.The Mentals 2014 tour touches down at the Merimbula RSL on Friday 17th October.Tickets cost $25pp and go on sale from September 10th; either from the Club or by phoning 6495 1502

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.
In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.
Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must...housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. It provides a fascinating insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.
The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region.
Bega has survived the downturn in retail relatively well, and has shops stocking everything from antiques, unusual clothing, books, whole foods, cafes, nursery and major retail outlets.
Bega has a thriving arts community, with its own Regional Gallery that hosts major exhibitions throughout the year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf was built in 1862 from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company. The Wharf has
been classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline.
If you're at Tathra Beach you might see dolphins or even whales; they head south on their migration from September to November and can sometimes be seen from the beach.
There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl and playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkeling, boating and canoeing. Book a fishing charter on one of the many local boats or throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River.
Don't miss a swim in the beautiful Blue Pool, set on the edge of the ocean at the base of the cliffs off Scenic Drive.
Try out the 18 hole golf course, hit a ball around the tennis courts or play bowls at the Bermagui Country Club.

The Bermagui Seaside Fair, a fantastic community event that celebrates life in Bermagui, is held in March each year.
Sculpture on the Edge is also held every March; this renowned event sees sculptures placed in spectacular locations around Bermagui, similar to Bondi's Sculpture by the Sea.
Another great cultural event in the biannual Four Winds Festival, to be held over the Easter weekend in 2016.

Heritage Day at Montreal GoldfieldMontreal Goldfield is once again holding a Heritage Day this year on Saturday October 11th.This weekend is the 134th anniversary of the Bermagui Mystery at the Montreal Goldfield, when in 1880 the complete disappearance of Government Surveyor Lamont Young, his assistant, and three men from Batemans Bay made headline news around the country.No-one knows what happened to the five men, but the Heritage Day at Montreal Goldfield ia great opportunity to learn more.Visitors are encouraged to come in 1880s period costume to add to the
atmosphere of the day. If you don't have something handy, there will be school clothes from that period available for photos.This year there will be a Poets Corner at the Heritage Day, and everyone is encouraged to bring a poem to read. You'll also be able to try gold panning of gravel deposits from the site.Tours will be run about every 15 minutes from 9.30am till 3.00 pm, ending with delicious billy tea and damper cooked over the hot coals.Entry is $5 per person. ry Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga Mountain, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the Brinja-Yuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town.
European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851.
Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

He established the town's first electricity plant a century ago, and is considered by some as the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme.
