It’s an oceanic migration like no other and Eden has been an important part of it for centuries... See how we celebrate it each November with art, street theatre and music, while we feast on the harvest from sea and land. Held in and around the port, the festival embraces our maritime and bush heritage. It’s the most unique whale watching experience the nation has to offer.

Whale Watching along the Wilderness Coast © Wayne Reynolds

Welcome to October on the Far South Coast, peak time in the annual southern whale migration. There have been sightings a -plenty; each year the numbers get better and better.

There are several choices for whale watching; you can go out on a whale watching cruise, a charter boat, fly along the coast in a plane or hang out on the nearest headland or cliff top. If you're at the beach and you're really lucky, you can sometimes see whales just 100 metres or so offshore!

The Far South Coast is one of the best places to go whale watching in Australia; you don't have to travel far at all to see humpback whales plus other species including southern right, minke and false killer whales.

The Eden Whale Festival on November 1st and 2nd celebrates the importance

of whales to the Eden community over the centuries - details on pages 2 and 6.

There are lots of other things to do this October apart from whale-watching. Moruya's greatly expanded jazz festival, now known as Granite Town, features jazz, food and funk; see page 27 for information about the events on over the weekend.

The wonderful Montreal Goldfield celebrates the 134th anniversary of the Bermagui Mystery at its Heritage Day on October 11th, plus there's gold panning to try, a Poets Corner and billy tea and damper cooked on the coals for afternoon tea - yum! You'll find details on page 21.

Our What's On page has even more events happening this month on the coast - make sure you get out and enjoy the culture of the coast.

Whale Watching on board Cat Ballou, Eden

Eden www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.

Eden is now famous as the number one whale watching destination in Australia, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Cat Balou Cruises have won numerous awards for their whale watching cruises.

Festival celebrates the significance of whales to EdenThe countdown is on for the Eden Whale Festival and the migration is shaping up to be the biggest, and longest, in 50 years.Earlier this year, Eden was named the nation’s top whale watching destination by Australian Geographic because of its closeness to the whale’s path, its remarkable maritime history and its unspoilt wilderness. The whales have been dropping by for months already, and now there are daily reports of sightings and close encounters with humpbacks, southern rights and even the occasional orca and false killer whale.

Of course whale watching is a key feature of the long-running festival. There will be lots of guided shore based whale watching experiences freely available all weekend and some of Australia’s best whale watching charters operating from port.

This year the festival, a finalist in the South Coast Tourism Awards for 2014, has a great variety of attractions and guided experiences that are sure to leave you breathless.Replica sailing ship, HM Bark Endeavour, will soon set sail for Eden to travel south with the migration. She is due at port on Friday, October 30 and will be open to the public all weekend.Wild About Whales cetacean expert Geoff Ross will host several shore based whale watching experiences from Eden’s panoramic headlands. He and Festival friends at the National Parks and Wildlife Service will have all the knowledge and gear to help participants become an expert too, including a boat tour to the historic Davidsons Whaling Station.Saturday, November 1 is all about entertainment at Snug Cove. The action begins with the 10am street parade followed by non-stop performances, workshops, live music, local produce, mini-adventures and more, culminating in the Festival’s famous fireworks and Whale Song gig at dusk.Sunday, November 2 is the time to relax and discover Eden’s other side – its unique maritime history, fresh local produce and engaging art exhibitions. The best way to do this is to board the new Discover Eden Shuttle Bus, a hop-on, hop-off service that delivers you to key vantage points, historical places, retail hub and galleries where friendly locals will be waiting to welcome all.Stay up to date with the latest Festival news at www.edenwhalefestival.com.au

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.

Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters, including Broadwater Oysters.

Whale Watching in MerimbulaThe Far South Coast is one of the best places in Australia to go whale watching; you don't have to travel very far to find whales, and once you find them, chances are you'll see more than one species. If you're keen to get out on the water, both Merimbula Marina and Headland Charters offer whale watching cruises. Prices vary depending on the time spent out on the water, but both charter outfits offer a fantastic experience. If water isn't your thing, Merimbula Air Services can get you airborne for a whale watching experience of a different kind. It's a lot quicker to find whales, and you can cruise up and down the coast to get a sense of just how many whales pass by the coast on their southern migration. If you know whales have been spotted at the northern end of Merimbula Bay, take a chance and head to the Merimbula Wharf Restaurant & Aquarium. Whales have been known to cruise right past the wharf - an experience you won't forget as you enjoy a coffee. If land-based whale watching suits best, visit your favourite headland with binoculars and a chair, and keep scanning the horizon for water spouts - whales are out there somewhere!

Mental as Anything play Merimbula RSLWhen four blokes from art school got together to play a gig in exchange for free beer back in 1977, little did they know that almost 40 years later Mental as Anything would still be performing. The band has been an ever-present part of the Australian music scene for decades, with hits such as The Nips Are Getting Bigger, If You Leave Me Can I Come Too? and Live It Up.They've toured extensively overseas, achieving success in the US, Canada, Germany, Scandinavia and the UK.They've even had group art exhibitions; in 1990 then deputy Prime Minister Paul Keating, opened the Mentals'

second exhibition, with works by all five band members attracting huge critical acclaim. Mental as Anything were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2009.There have been a few line-up changes over the years, but Greedy Smith, Martin Plaza and Reg Mombassa (aka Chris O'Doherty) still form the heart and soul of the band. The Mentals 2014 tour touches down at the Merimbula RSL on Friday 17th October.Tickets cost $25pp and go on sale from September 10th; either from the Club or by phoning 6495 1502

Both Kevin and Chris are highly experienced osteopaths with a wealth of knowledge attained from clinical practice and continuing study over the last three decades. Their practice is fine-tuned toward easing pain that originates in the muscular skeletal system and promotes the health of internal organs, resulting in overall regeneration of all body tissues and ideal health status. Their gentle safe techniques promote mobility, restore balance and function to the musculoskeletal system, which encourages healing, pain free movement and wellbeing.

Massage therapists Lynne Davidson and Sally Miles are qualified in massage modalities including Therapeutic & Remedial, Lymphatic Drainage & Pregnancy. Lynne is also an accredited teacher and has taught massage in Singapore, Vietnam and Hong Kong. She uses a holistic approach to her practice, taking into consideration the physical, mental and emotional aspects of the entire individual. Both are very passionate about health, nutrition and the nurturing healing touch of massage. Their treatments are aimed at alleviating pain from injuries and promoting the body’s natural healing processes, providing patients with better quality of life, health and well being.

...will take you there!

Bega © Paul Callaghan

Bega www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

www.monthlyimag.com.au

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.

Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.

The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must...housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. It provides a fascinating insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region.

Bega has survived the downturn in retail relatively well, and has shops stocking everything from antiques, unusual clothing, books, whole foods, cafes, nursery and major retail outlets.

Bega has a thriving arts community, with its own Regional Gallery that hosts major exhibitions throughout the year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains.

The village was established with a Post Office, General Store, school, Hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese making industries.Today, Cobargo is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district. Cobargo combines the skills and craft of a working village with a genuinely

historic past, its streetscape featuring many turn of the century buildings. With galleries, cafes and established businesses like South Coast Leather and the unique Bangles Pottery shop, Cobargo is a great little village to spend some time wandering about in.Saturday mornings in particular see Cobargo come alive with the fantastic Laneway markets. Browse fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There's also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker.Every February the Cobargo Folk Festival takes over the showground, attracting international artists and local performers alike. Featuring much more than folk music, the Festival brings together musicians playing a diverse range of music for dedicated fans.

Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples, with beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf was built in 1862 from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company. The Wharf has

been classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline.

If you're at Tathra Beach you might see dolphins or even whales; they head south on their migration from September to November and can sometimes be seen from the beach.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl and playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka.

Montreal Goldfield at Bermagui

Heritage Day at Montreal GoldfieldMontreal Goldfield is once again holding a Heritage Day this year on Saturday October 11th.This weekend is the 134th anniversary of the Bermagui Mystery at the Montreal Goldfield, when in 1880 the complete disappearance of Government Surveyor Lamont Young, his assistant, and three men from Batemans Bay made headline news around the country.No-one knows what happened to the five men, but the Heritage Day at Montreal Goldfield ia great opportunity to learn more.Visitors are encouraged to come in 1880s period costume to add to the

atmosphere of the day. If you don't have something handy, there will be school clothes from that period available for photos. This year there will be a Poets Corner at the Heritage Day, and everyone is encouraged to bring a poem to read. You'll also be able to try gold panning of gravel deposits from the site.Tours will be run about every 15 minutes from 9.30am till 3.00 pm, ending with delicious billy tea and damper cooked over the hot coals.Entry is $5 per person. ry Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga Mountain, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the Brinja-Yuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town.

European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851.

Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for

On the 17th - 19th October the Jazz-infused Funk and Food Festival Granite Town will emerge like a phoenix from the roots of the long established Moruya Jazz Festival. The historic riverside town of Moruya, home of Sydney Harbour Bridge granite, will play host to a world class line-up of phenomenal artists. The likes of four time ARIA award winning artist and six time platinum selling songstress KATIE NOONAN will raise the roof when she takes to the stage for the Granite Town Festival. Also on the line-up is one of Australia's most recognised bands THIRSTY MERC; the unique foot-stomping, heart-wrenching MAMA KIN; and the natural and refreshing 'real thing' Jazz stylings of EMMA PASK to name a few. Alongside the star studded line-up,

the best of our local and regional performers will showcase established and up-and-coming talent with an emphasis on community spirit and involvement. In addition to a full weekend of non-stop music over four jamming venues, the pop-up dining district EAT STREET will showcase local produce and eateries. Among the many exceptional experiences, visitors can book a seat to be ferried out to the exclusive SANDBAR BRUNCH - a low tide gourmet dining experience on the sand bar of the beautiful Moruya River. The festival commences on Friday night with a Welcome to Country opening ceremony and the visually spectacular RIVERLIGHTS, a parade of unique artist-designed, community built, floating lanterns at dusk. Visitors

to the area will encounter historic photographs and displays of the ‘Granite Town’ era, re-establishing the connection to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and many other iconic landmarks built from Moruya granite. The well-established annual celebration FESTIVAL OF VOICE and the much anticipated, traditional Moruya festival STREET PARADE will delight onlookers. With the time-honoured Sunday morning GOSPEL SERVICE, and funky LATE NIGHT JAMS where anything can happen, the GRANITE TOWN festival will be a South Coast spectacular, the likes of which the Eurobodalla has rarely witnessed before. The 2014 GRANITE TOWN Festival is proud to support the community, tourism and local charity.

Mogo www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Gold Rush Colony, Mogo © Gold Rush Colony

www.monthlyimag.com.au

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.

Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time.

After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award.

Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’.Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards.

Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.

The Three Amigos at ClockTower ArcadeMogo has cause to celebrate! Three artists have established new galleries in the ClockTower Arcade.Award-winning photographer Andrew Carter’s incredible local and overseas landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful. Mention Photoshop to this guy and you’d better run for the hills. Andrew conducts private lessons for any student or hobbyist wanting to improve or learn from scratch.Colin Perini’s seascapes are easy on the eye and soothing to the soul. Colin worked in Europe, the USA and Japan before settling down on the Gold Coast in good old Oz. Too hot for his liking, he looked south and found less humid surroundings in Mogo. When Colin’s not

painting the canvas blue and sand he enjoys sketching cartoon portraits. There is one of you if you would like to see it.Not to be outdone by her father’s extensive talent, Alison Perini is equally competent in ceramic mosaics, specialising in the wild fauna of Africa. You can discover Alison most days fossicking for shards of coloured glass or glazed ceramics in the Gallery, creating yet another creature of paradise.Although all works displayed are valued appropriately it costs nothing to browse, and limited edition 2015 calendars and many small offerings make for a little memento of your day out at Mogo. The artists can be found online so check them out or just call into the ClockTower Arcade Mogo.
