ISSUE 10 | TERM 2 | WEEK 6 | 29 MAY 2017
IMPORTANT DATES * Denotes importance
Amazing Race
On Monday 22 May all Year 7 students participated in an
exciting approach to learning hosted by Solid Mob, ‘The
Amazing Race to Happy’. This hands on game
mirrors similar features to the TV show where teams have
to travel gaining clues along the way to gain points. Solid
Mob set up eight stations within the school where students
had to solve problems and gain clues for team points. Every
activity had a purpose to teach about good healthy habits or
the dangers of drugs and alcohol. At the conclusion of the
game Solid Mob spoke to all students about the dangers of
drugs and in particular smoking. The Amazing Race to Happy
was a fantastic way to learn health concepts and six teams
won prizes consisting of footballs, netballs, lunchboxes and
hats

Principals Column Uniform in Winter
Many thanks to those students who, supported by their
families, are making better choices and wearing their
uniform proudly. We are now seeing very few “hoodies” or
jumpers with patterned sleeves being worn under uniform
shirts.
Student Attendance
The vast majority of our families do a great job letting us
know when and why their student is absent from school.
Nonetheless, I would like to remind our parents and carers
of their role in this regard, according to the Department’s
Procedures for School Attendance:
Children should attend school every day it is open
for instruction.
Parents or carers should provide an explanation for
absences by means such a telephone call, written
note, text message or email to the school within 7
days from the first day of any period of absence.
Parents and carers should communicate with the
school if they are aware of issues impacting on their
child’s attendance or engagement with school.
At Kingscliff High School, students attend roll call every
morning and written explanations of any absence should be
handed to the relevant roll call teacher.
Parent Portal & Student Reports
By now all of our parents and carers should have received
information on how to access our Parent Portal. Please
contact the school if this is not the case. This term, Year 12
reports were made accessable via this facility. Where
parents preferred to receive a hard copy of their student’s
report, they were asked to contact the relevant Year Adviser.
Our intention is to also distribute student reports for Years 7
to 11 through the Parent Portal at the end of this term. Again,
where parents or carers would prefer to receive a hard copy
of their student’s report, they will be asked to contact the
relevant Year Adviser.
School Plan 2015 – 2017
Since arriving at Kingscliff High School in late 2014, it has
been my great pleasure to work with staff, students and
parents on the writing, implementation and evaluation of our
current School Plan, now well and truly into its final year. I
have described in detail the achievements of our school
community in working towards our School Plan in the Annual
School Reports for 2015 and 2016, both of which are posted
on our school website.
In summary, our achievements over the past two and a half
years have included:
The consolidation of our strong partnerships with
Coastal learning Community primary schools.
A comprehensive review and expansion of our
communication with our school community.
A review of the ways in which we recognise and
reward academic achievement.
The implementation of a second academic stream
class in each year group.
The implementation of cross curricular learning
extension opportunities for students.
The implementation of explicit literacy and
numeracy teaching strategies across all curriculum
areas.
The Yuli Coastal Culture program for Aboriginal
students from across all seven Coastal Learning
Community schools promoting educational and
post school goal setting.
Regular opportunities for teachers to work together
on best practice teaching and learning strategies.
Explicit teaching of expected positive behaviours in
our playground and classroom as part of our
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program.
Regular rewards for students who consistently meet
PBL expectations and demonstrate STAR student
qualities (Safe, Tolerant, Achieving, Respectful).
Regular reporting (twice a term) of student’s
learning behaviours in class to parents and carers
through the WAVE program.
A revised Student Welfare and Discipline Policy
explicitly supporting positive learning environments
across the school.
A comprehensive sequence of student wellbeing
programs addressing age appropriate issues for
each of our year groups.
The employment of additional learning support
teachers to help students with additional needs.
School Plan 2018 – 2020
I have mentioned in previous issues of Kingy Spirit that I am
now looking forward to working with teachers, students and
parents in order to develop our new School Plan, to be
implemented from the start of next year. This will take place
over two evenings, Monday 21 August and Monday 23
October, both from 3.15pm to 5.15pm
Along with our teachers, I will be working through our
Student Representative Council to encourage students to
take part, while also working with our P&C to encourage as
many parents and carers as possible to be a part of the
process. If there are any parents or carers who would like to
find out more about our planning process leading up to next
year, and hopefully get involved, I would encourage them to
contact me at school.
Wishing all of our school community a great week,
Michael Hensley
Principal

Baseball Lachlan Maurer completed at the Junior League Baseball
Nationals in Adelaide last week. He plays for the Gold Coast
Mariners, which qualified for the national titles by finishing
Top 3 in Queensland.
Lachlan is the catcher and has been playing baseball for four
years and has had six years of softball.
At the Australian Titles the Mariners played six games
including teams from NSW (The Hills, Ryde & Cronulla),
Melbourne and Perth. His team drew a very strong pool,
which included the tournament winners The Hills. Lachlan’s
team recorded one victory (15-7) against a Victorian Team,
in their six matches. Lachlan batted well throughout the
tournament scoring a number of base hits and runners
home.
Lachlan has been invited to trial for the U16 Queensland
team. He looking forward to a short break before getting
ready for the next season.
Congratulations Lachlan
Cross Country
On Friday 19 May a small team of 20 students, following late
withdrawals, competed in the Far North Coast Zone Cross
Country Carnival. What this team lacked in numbers was
made up for by quality with 18 students qualifying for the
North Coast Regional carnival to held in Murwillumbah.
Kingscliff High’s finished seconded to Bryon Bay by 40
points a great achievement given our small team.
A special congratulations to three of our athletes;
13yrs Girls – Ayva Samuelson
14yrs Boys – Eoghan Barnes
15 years Boys – Casey O’Brien
It’s an outstanding achievement being named FNC age
champion
Good Luck to all runners at the North Coast Carnival in
Murwillumbah on 7 June 2017.
League Tag
South Tweed held a League Tag gala day on Wednesday 17
May. Kingscliff High School entered a Under 15’s girls team
into the competition. The Girls played four games on the day
and came out undefeated, against Wollumbin High School,
Mt St Patrick, Banora Point High School and Murwillumbah
High School. Miss Fitzhugh and Mr Hillard were very
impressed at the sportsmanship displayed by the girls and
their ability to transfer their touch and Oz tag skills, adapting
these skills to suit the new game called League Tag.
Congratulations on your effort girls and keep up the school
spirit.
YULI DAY 1 On Monday 22 May, Indigenous students from Kingscliff High School enjoyed Day 1 of the Coastal Learning Community’s Yuli
Program. This program aims to help Year 5 and 6 students from schools in the Coastal Learning Community (Pottsville Beach
Public School, Bogangar Public School, Kingscliff Public School, Cudgen Public School, Duranbah Public School, Kingscliff Public
School and Fingal Head Public School) to connect to the Indigenous culture of the area while helping them transition into high
school.
The Kingscliff High School students who participate in this program act as mentors with the primary school students. Following
from a traditional welcome in language from Talah Daley and Breanna Giddins, the primary students were divided into three
different groups. Each group rotated between three activities run by the Kingscliff High School students throughout the day. In
Dance, where the students started learning the dances Joongarra and Goaye. In Langauages with students learning head,
shoulders knees and toes. Also learning traditional weaving methods, cultural stories and bush tucker with Uncle Frank. The
students went for a walk up to Fingal Headland and Dreamtime Beach, hearing stories of the Hairy Man, Devil Dog, and the
Booning.
Thank you to Banaam for their continued support of the Yuli program and Fingal Head Public School for allowing Yuli activities
to take place at their school.
