Dr Guo Fusheng and Mr Tang Hao briefed the progress of China Field Epidemiology Training Program for Veterinarians (FETPV), Dr Quick and Ms Lu then shared the new collaboration initiatives on CFETP between China CDC and US CDC. Participants reviewed the progress of CFETP/CFETPV collaboration in recent years, and also discussed how to strengthen collaborations on epidemiology capacity development between these two programs in the future. The collaboration between the two programs not only contributed to epidemiology capacity development in China, but also facilitated cooperation on zoonosis control between public health and animal health sectors. It has been becoming an example of One Health application in China. Since the first CFETP/CFETPV joint workshop in 2012, two programs co-organized several joint workshops and training courses, and encouraged trainees from two sectors conducted joint practices in the field. Moreover, two programs co-organized the first joint-training on epidemiology for western provinces to mitigate unbalanced development of epidemiology in western provinces. Two programs will continuously work together to response public and animal health challenges and threats for China. In order to provide a platform for discussions and exchange of ideas on veterinary laboratory research and laboratory systems, LinkTADs consortium (WP4 and WP5) held a three-day event on New Diagnostic Technologies, Coordination of Research and Veterinary Laboratory Systems and Policy from 12-14 October 2015. Following the event, the LinkTADs 2 nd Progress meeting was held from 15-16 October 2015. Dr Guo Fusheng and Dr Li Shuo participated in both of the meetings, on behalf of FAO China ECTAD. The event on New Diagnostic Technologies, Coordination of Research mainly introduced the latest diagnostic technologies being developed and used, the main research initiatives in the EU, China and across the globe, explored collaborative opportunities for EU and China researchers and institutions in the future. The event on Veterinary Laboratory Systems and Policy discussed the structure and functions of the veterinary laboratory systems, and how policy gets developed and implemented by different system in the EU, China and international level. Dr Guo chaired a session during the WP5 policy meeting and facilitated discussion sessions, while Dr Li Shuo facilitated the meeting organization and coordinated among Chinese partners. The LinkTADs 2 nd Progress meeting reviewed the achievement of the project during the past year, discussed the work plan of next year and explored potential collaborative opportunities after the LinkTADs project finishes in November 2016. They visited the Jiangxi Normal University’s Poyang Lake wetland laboratory where they were impressed with the technology. They also visited local duck farms with a team of experts from Okalahoma University and Jiangxi Normal University. Okalahoma University is partnering with Jiangxi Normal University to conduct an ecology study using transmitters to track duck movements. They also visited an egg wholesale market and the biggest poultry wholesale market in Nanchang, where they spoke to traders and buyers and gained a preliminary understanding on some of the poultry value chains, local consumption preferences and recent changes in the production systems. Reductions in prices of meat ducks and farmed wildlife coupled with higher prices and demand for duck eggs had resulted in significant changes.

Advanced veterinary epidemiology training on risk-based surveillance and risk analysis for Chinese university academics was held at Huazhong Agricultural University in Wuhan, Hubei Province from 9 to 13 January 2015. It was the third training for the Chinese university academics and the focus was on strengthening capacity among university academics on risk based approaches to surveillance, disease control as required for their work on national programs.

Around 50 academic staff from 17 national universities attended the five-day training. Prof Ian Robertson and Dr Cai Chang delivered the training, with assistance from Dr Li Yin from CAHEC, Dr Guo Fusheng and Mr Tang Hao from FAO China ECTAD Office.

Participants demonstrated keen interest in the training topics and were actively engaging in the discussion sessions. They also expressed the need for an in-depth training in the future.

Dr Wantanee Kalpravidh, Regional Manager and Dr Peter Black, Deputy Regional Manager of FAO ECTAD RAP will visit China from 2 to 6 February 2015. The Module 1 of the China FETPV will be launched in Qingdao on 30 March 2015.

Promotion of the application of One Health in China has always been one of the important priorities of FAO China ECTAD's work. Dr Guo Fusheng was invited to attend the Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) research progress workshop in Suzhou from 20-22 October 2015, and delivered a presentation on One Health and its application in China during the workshop. The workshop was jointly organized by Jiangsu Provincial Prevention Medicine Association and Jiangsu Province Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The key objective of the meeting was to share the EIDs research progress, as well as prevention and control experiences. More than 70 participants from the provincial CDC system of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui Provinces attended the meeting.

Dr Guo introduced the One Health Events organized by FAO China ECTAD office and the major recommendations of the events. He highlighted the importance of integrating knowledge of different disciplines and utilizing the One Health approach in China, given the fact that, in recent decades, because of the close contact of human, animal and wild life, more than 70% of the EIDs were zoonotic diseases. In the future, strengthening the collaboration of multi agencies, including public health, animal health and wild life department is crucial.

As invited by Sichuan Provincial Center for Animal Disease Prevention and Control (ACDC), Dr Guo Fusheng attended the Veterinary Epidemiology Training Workshop in Chengdu on 27 October 2015. Around 80 veterinarians from the provincial, prefectural and county level of veterinary authorities in Sichuan attended the training.

Extending the veterinary epidemiological training to the sub-provincial-level veterinary agencies is one of the main objectives of the China Field Epidemiology Training Program for Veterinarians (FETPV), therefore, FAO China ECTAD supports this training initiative in Sichuan. Dr Guo presented the veterinary epidemiology application at global and national level, Avian Influenza (AI) and Live Bird Market (LBM) management. He introduced the concepts of veterinary epidemiology and its application, especially on how to use the veterinary epidemiology in the animal diseases outbreak investigation, surveillance, risk analysis and control policy. Besides, Dr Guo introduced the China FETPV program to the national, provincial and municipal level of veterinary professionals, and the Training of Chinese Trainers (TOT) implemented under the China FETPV. During the training, Dr Guo highlighted that LBM management is one of the key measures to control the AI. Dr Guo also provided recommendations on the prevention and control of AI in Sichuan Province.
