I love spring – all those fabulous scented flowers to look

forward to and many flowering before the trees leaf-up so as

to make the best of whatever light and sun there may be. The

scent acts as a waving flag to passing bumble bees on warm

days and is a vital part of the pollination process – so it’s not all

just for our pleasure.

I am a fan of so many early flowerers but here are a few that

are special: Hamamelis – or Witch Hazels – bewitching in every

way. Spidery flowers adorn the bare stems in colours of reds,

oranges and yellows – many cultivars giving off a splendid

perfume that fills the air. They are not going to do well on thin,

chalky soils – they actually prefer a neutral to slightly acidic soil

so if you intend to plant one in the garden, add loads

of ericaceous compost into the planting hole and use

a specific ericaceous feed through the summer to set

them up for the next year.

Camellia – also bewitching when in full flower but

few are scented. Again, they are not fans of thin

chalk so repeat the performance described above.

If they fail to flower well, this might be the result of

not enough water at the root during the summer

as this is the time when they begin to make those

flowerbuds. These are woodland plants and best not planted

in an east-facing position as this way the emerging buds can be

caught by a late frost, bursting and browning the buds when

the sun hits them. It is a good plan to have some horticultural

fleece to hand to throw over a plant if a sharp frost if forecast.

Sarcococca – a small shrubby evergreen with privet-like leaves

that bears masses of tiny white, sweetly-scented bells along

its stems in January and February. It prefers a part-shade

position and if you cut some of the stems to take indoors, the

perfume will fill the house. Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ –

pink clusters of fragrant flowers along bare winter stems with

this one. It can grow into a bit of a whopper so thinning out

by taking out one of the oldest stems and cutting back AFTER

flowering is advised. Jasminum nudiflorum – Winter Jasmine –

yellow starry flowers on green stems devoid of proper leaves

to brighten up a dull day. No scent like the summer ones, but

good for covering an east or north wall where it will need to be

tied on to wires as it has no climbing mechanisms of its own.

Daphne – exquisite perfume – some are evergreen. Always

expensive to buy no matter what the size as they are difficult

to propagate. They also have the unnerving tendency to die on

you for no apparent reason BUT – when they are in flower they

are fabulous and worth every penny.

All these early flowering shrubs need the same treatment –

feed through summer and do any pruning AFTER they have

flowered – do not leave it until autumn as you will cut off all

the potential flowerheads and be VERY disappointed! Oriental

Hellebores will be flowering so make sure that the flowers

themselves are on full show by cutting all the old leaves down

to the ground. New, fresh leaves will appear in late spring. Old

herbaceous perennials that you may have left need to be cut

back now as well, including any deciduous grasses you may

have – do this before they start to grow to limit damage to new

growth. Mulch about the place as well – I use Strulch but you

can use garden compost, old bags of compost, leaf mould or

chipped bark – and be generous.

Wisterias and late flowering Clematis will need attention now.

With Wisterias, the winter pruning is a matter of going back to

the whippy growths that you cut back in summer

and shortening them to 2-3 buds from the main

framework. Do not overfeed Wisterias – this is one

of the main causes of no flowers – loads of leaf and

stem growth but not much else. Late-Clematis eg the

viticella/texensis types need to be cut right down to

about 30cm just above a bud or leaf joint as they only

flower on new growth. Roses should also have their

proper pruning done now as well – autumn pruning

tends to be about restricting damage caused by high

winds so now is the time to get them into proper shape. Do not

be afraid to cut hard if you need to, particularly shrub, hybrid

teas and floribundas if they are getting out of hand. Cut above

an outward facing bud and make sure that you take off any

dead, diseased or thin spindly growth right back to the stem. If

you spot die-back – i.e. the stem has gone black/brown at the

top, cut right back to healthy new wood. Die-back is a fungal

I know that as we drag our way through February, Spring seems a long way off and it is all too easy to feel weary and a bit forlorn - but fear not - Spring IS on the way.

infection and shows up where stems have been just cut any old

way and not back to leaf joints where cell-division occurs thus

leading to the wound being healed properly and new growth

occurring. Give them a good feed of rose fertiliser or seaweed

feed following the instructions on the pack – never overfeed

– that way lurks danger. And make sure that you disinfect your

secateurs before moving on to a new plant.

You may think that your lawn has looked more like you could

grow rice in it, but you will need that lawn mower so best get

the blades sharpened and the whole thing ready for action.

Finally – get out and about to enjoy the carpets of snowdrops

and those exquisite early flowerers – they will lift your spirits

and set you up for spring. Zena Robson

Devizes In Bloom and CUDSFollowing our successful retention of our gold medal at

the South West In Bloom awards in October, the In Bloom

committee have set to work planning this year’s events and

displays. For your part, you can get started planning what you

might enter for our own in-house Devizes In Bloom awards.

There have been a few changes to the categories that will

be judged in July so now, residents can enter one or all of

the  following:

Best overall front garden

Best overall rear garden

Best bedding garden (front or rear)

Best single container

Best single hanging basket

Best Pride in Your Place entry

You will see that we have introduced two new categories for

residents. One is called ‘Pride in Your Place’ and will be open

to 3 or more adjoining residential properties where time

and effort has been put in to making the area attractive by

tidying, weeding and planting. If you think you would like to

have a bash at that one, have a chat with your neighbours.

You might decide that you are all going to grow tomatoes

and strawberries in pots and containers, or you might all have

hanging baskets and pots full of flowers – you could even

buy them together to see if you can get a discount! The other

new category, Best Bedding Garden, recognises the effort and

diligence that goes into planting and maintaining a garden

which is predominantly made up of summer bedding plants.

Businesses are judged automatically in several categories, as

are hotels, pubs, coffee shops and tea rooms so they do not

need to enter.

If you are involved in a young person’s group of any description and feel that you would like to encourage them

to green-up their area, please let us know at the Town Hall as

we would be happy to come along to chat about what you

might do and how you might go about it. And talking of young

people, we shall, once again, be having a schools’ competition

in the vein of last year’s fabulous Scarecrows displayed on

the roundabout by The Green. I know that many of you went

round that roundabout more than once to take it all in. Details

will be sent to schools shortly and we do hope that as many as

possible will join in. This year’s theme will be ‘Blue  Planet’.

As you know, our Open Gardens weekend is now a biennial

event and so will not be running again until 2019. However, it

is possible that some Devizes’ gardeners may decide to open

their gardens for a specific charity, rather like three of them

did for Dorothy House Hospice in September and raised £200.

We will let you know of any such volunteers! We shall also be

having our businesses’ Floral and Themed Window Trail maps

throughout July – again, and to tie in with the schools and

nurseries, the theme will be ‘Blue Planet’.

Lastly, your trusty Clean Up Devizes Squad (CUDS) have been

out and about since mid-January,

picking up from where they left off at the end of November.

Litter will not elude us – we are eagle-eyed. We are also

trying to beautify areas that are simply either a poor excuse

for grass or are overgrown and causing problems for people,

such as was the case with the alleyway near Festival Close.

The roundabouts at Alan Cobham and Windsor Drive and

also at the bottom of Jump Farm Road will hopefully give you

something to smile about a bit later in the spring and through

the summer, along with strange bits along the walls down

Windsor Drive – we have seeded one but have another to go

back to. If you come across any smallish areas that are simply

THERE but you don’t know why as they don’t get looked after

much, and if you think they would be worth a look, please let

us know. Our green fingers get itchy!

Should you happen to think that you would like to join the

CUDS this year, you would be very welcome. Do not feel that

you are expected to attend every meet-up – we all have lives

as well! Our days are Tuesdays and Saturdays, but not every

one; times are from 1.00 p.m. – 3.00 p.m. when we meet back

at the Hillworth Park café for a cup of tea and a moan about

the state of the world – it’s all good fun, strangely! If you would

like to know more or to join us, please let Cathy or Elanor know

at the Town Hall on 01380 722160 and they will pass

your details on to me. And talking of the CUDS, a HUGE thank

you to Business Over Breakfast group who donated £50, the

Devizes Lodge who donated £250, the Devizes Area Board

who donated £500 and – much to our surprise – we were also

granted £1,000 from The People’s Postcode Lottery. We are

very grateful to all and it is much appreciated.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGIONAS YOU ARE AWARE 2018 IS THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF WWI

Devizes is one of the few towns which has a crescent shaped Memorial, which was built in 1921, it has 6 bronze

plaques upon which are the names of 199 of our local hero’s from the town, who were killed in various battles, or died of their wounds later in local hospitals.

All those named on the plaques belong to local families, many of whom still live in the area. I am asking for any of these families to get in touch with me so a special service can be performed in their honour every month at our local RBL meetings, with those named families present. What I propose

to do is carry out research into the history of the named person from the memorial.

On the 3rd Tuesday of every month the RBL have a branch meeting in the Wyvern  Club in Church Walk. Starting in January 2018, running till October, I will read out the history of two named persons each month. The readings will compose a visual display of any material I can obtain which relates to that person. Whilst I am reading out the history, the last post will be played, and the RBL branch standard will be lowered in their honour. At the end of each reading all the material will

be presented to the family, who will of course be invited to the event, as guests of the Branch.

So if any local family have any of  their previous generation on the town plaque, please contact me.Alan R ThomsonBranch SecretaryDevizes RBL01380 724180        [email protected]
