SPEED TAKES CENTER STAGEFive super-competitive racing series — and a unique trip down memory lane — will share the high-speed spotlight during the 43rd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend:

VERIZON INDYCAR SERIESDefending race and series champion Simon Pagenaud will duel a pack of great veteran drivers like Scott Dixon, Will Power, Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay, plus a group of up-and-coming young guns like Josef Newgarden and Alexander Rossi. Off-season team/driver changes and engine switches should make this turbocharged, 185-mph battle one of the more hotly-contested IndyCar races on Long Beach's classic street course in many years.

MOTEGI RACING SUPER DRIFT CHALLENGE RACESDefending event champion Matt Field will face off against 15 of Formula Drift's top drivers, all of them burning rubber and going wheel-to-wheel in turns 9-10-11 under the lights Friday and Saturday.

BUBBA BURGER SPORTS CAR GRAND PRIX AT LONG BEACHThe 100-minute dash to the checkered flag, part of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series, will include a wide variety of high-powered, sleek prototypes and hot sports cars from Corvette, Ferrari, BMW, Porsche,

Lexus, Mercedes and more. Light displays on each car make it easy to see who's winning in each particular class.

PIRELLI WORLD CHALLENGEHigh-speed GT and GTA entries will be racing for victory — and important points — in round two of the 11-race 2017 PWC series. PWC cars aiming to be first in Victory Lane include Cadillac, Audi, McLaren, Bentley, Acura, Ferrari, BMW and Aston Martin, among others.

SPEED ENERGY STADIUM SUPER TRUCKS Robby Gordon's fan-favorite series features racing trucks in high-speed action that combines the best of desert racing and motocross — complete with trucks soaring off ramps and heavy-duty fender-banging! — on the city streets. Friday includes practice/qualifying with races on both Sat. and Sun. afternoons.

CAN-AM CHALLENGEFor the first time ever at any street circuit, this 20-minute "blast from the past" will showcase the same roaring, earth-shaking 1,000-hp Can-Am Series cars from the years 1966-74 — McLaren, Lola, Shadow and more — that were driven by racing legends like Mark Donohue, Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney, Phil Hill and Bruce McLaren.

SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROAR!HISTORIC CAN-AM CARS TAKE TO THE STREETS

Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach fans will get a ground-shaking taste of the 1000+ horsepower cars that dominated the golden age of Can-Am racing when the historic machines battle on the world-famous seaside circuit.

The 20-minute Can-Am Challenge race starts at approximately noon Saturday, just prior to the BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix event. It will be the first time the powerful cars have competed on any city's streets, and the tremendous sounds the 1000-hp engines produce is something race fans will long remember!

Can-Am, short for the Canadian-American Challenge Cup, was a wildly popular racing series that ran at tracks in Canada and the U.S. from 1966 to 1974.

The Can-Am era featured sleek creations from McLaren, Porsche, Lola, Shadow and more, with a list of famed drivers that included Jim Hall, Mark Donohue, Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones, George Follmer, Dan Gurney, Phil Hill, Bruce McLaren and John Surtees, among others.

The Long Beach race will feature up to 20 cars from Can-Am's 1966-74 era and will be sanctioned by the Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA).

“HMSA is thrilled to be part of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, a truly iconic event with a rich motorsports tradition,” said Cris Vandagriff, president of the HMSA. “We are proud to bring the cars from what has been called the greatest series ever created, the original Can-Am. These cars were the fastest racing cars of their day and still make the earth move when they take to the track.”

OFFICIAL ARTIST: JIM SWINTALFrom his childhood in South Bend, IN to his days

in race control for CART, Champ Car and IndyCar, motor racing has been a focal point in Jim Swintal’s life, just as it is the focal point of his art. His work captures the excitement of some of racing’s most memorable moments, and this year’s Grand Prix race poster art certainly qualifies.

Swintal made his first journey to the Indianapolis 500 at age 13 and was instantly enthralled. After graduation in 1979 from Notre Dame, he settled in Chicago as an architect and joined the SCCA as a volunteer corner marshal until 1990, when he stepped in as Indy Lights starter in Phoenix.

He was named CART starter in 1993 and started every race in Long Beach until 2002 when he was promoted to Clerk of the Course. In 2010 he joined race control staffs of both IndyCar and IMSA and Swintal, who lives in Irvine, will handle a variety of communications duties for both series this weekend.

For 2017, his second commission for the race, Swintal has created a piece that depicts every series racing here in a classic travel post card format and, as he says, "The post card captures the energy and excitement of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach - an event that is the envy and benchmark of all other street races.”Jim Swintal’s original art, prints and lithographs are available on his website, jimswintal.com

LONG BEACH THE EPITOME OF 'COASTAL STYLE" From its humble industrial beginnings, Long Beach has been

transformed into a city with many international and cultural experiences, creating a unique environment ideal for visitors and residents alike.

The city is now home to almost 500,000 people enjoying Long Beach's perfect balance between soothing beachfronts and an energetic lifestyle.

In l984, iconic venues such as the Long Beach Arena, Convention Center and Shoreline Marina were key locations for the Los Angeles Summer Olympics, hosting volleyball, fencing and sailing.

From its many award-winning restaurants and art museums to the immensely-popular Aquarium of the Pacific — not to mention surfing, kayaking and sailing — Long Beach defines the term "Coastal Living."

A major part of that living style is the world-class Aquarium of the Pacific, located at 100 Aquarium Way (south of Shoreline Drive and just east of Golden Shore). The Aquarium is one of Southern California's most popular attractions, exploring the waters of Southern California and Baja, the Northern Pacific and Tropical Pacific and featuring 11,000 ocean animals in 19 major habitats, including Shark Lagoon. The Aquarium is open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on race weekend. Check "aquariumofpacific.org" for more information.

The art scene covers a wide variety of mediums, from street art to the 1936 art deco ocean liner Queen Mary. You can stroll through the East Village Art District, or explore an abundance of historic architectural styles, including the Long Beach Museum of Art.

A short three miles way is Belmont Shore, packed with more than 200 restaurants and businesses ready for your enjoyment.

Inland, California State University, Long Beach, provides top-level education for more than 30,000 students, including such distinguished alumni as film/TV icons Steven Spielberg and Steve Martin and baseball's Troy Tulowitzki.
