Twilight Education Project continues to help immigrant families gain the language skills they need to succeed in our community. We held an open house this month and were happy to see sev- eral board members there along with other com- munity leaders who were able to see this great pro- gram in action. The program is growing: we have added a 4 th bus route and are reaching 75 more children and parents from Oak View. Last month, we conducted a survey of participating parents that showed great results. Because of the Twilight program, 73% of parents have become more involved in their children’s education, 69% feel more able to help with their children’s homework, 73% say they understand more when they talk to their children’s healthcare providers, 54% say the understand more when their children are talking to their English-speaking friends. This shows that the adult component of the pro- gram is helping participants become better equipped to be parents in this community, which ultimately makes a huge difference for the kids. We just received word from the Draper Family Fund that we will receive a $25,000 grant to support Twilight in 2008-2009, but, this is our last year of funding from them, so the Development team will be on the lookout for new grant resources. In July, 20 kids from Twilight will have a chance to attend a week-long sleep away camp at Pathfinder Ranch thanks to grants from LA Times and the OC Register. The families are so excited! We’re told that one mom cried tears of joy she was so thrilled for her daughter to have this opportunity. Family Support Program Changing Lives... During the month of April, we started it out with a Bang! The first week of April we held our Boys & Girls Clubs of America Week with a different activity each day such as BGC Blue Day, Crazy Hair Day, and Sports Day, and ended the week with a Spring Carnival on Friday out on the playground. The next week was exciting as well. We had our Garden Grove members here for their Spring Break week and had them participate in fun activities as well as offering them field trips throughout the week.

As we wound down the month, our branch started looking into summer and making the necessary

arrangements to finish the school year strong. Our Power Hour has more participants in it at this time than any other time during the school year and our science club has been creating new and exciting experiments each week to teach kids how to use their critical thinking skills to make things happen.

Looking forward, our branch will move into summer planning as well as finishing our current programs by recognizing each participant with a program party.

his accomplishment of Youth of the Year. It was a great night and everyone had a wonderful time.

We have been doing great in get-ting donations for the auction. Having a theme for each month has really put the parents on track to help with this program. When donations are re-ceived we document it and throw a thank you party for the kids. This month it was root beer floats and the kids went crazy. It is safe to say fun was had by all.

Our club has been bursting with excitement over the past month. On May 2nd our branch held its 4th annual “Youth of the Year” dinner. The night consisted of inviting all of our 2007 Members of the Month and their families, to enjoy dinner, a slide show, and the announcement of our 2008 Youth of the Year, Brett McDaniel. Every Member of the Month received a gift bag. Brett received a gift bag as well as a plaque presented to his parents for

Every April/ May the Melting Pot, a restaurant in Irvine, holds a Mothers Day Essay Competition for children. Over the last three years our kids have been putting out some sensational essays about their mothers. This year Stephanie De Souza, a member of the HB Branch, won the competition. Stephanie received a free meal at the Melting Pot for her entire family and an appointment for her mother to get her hair and nails done.

We’ve had another busy month! The week of May 5-9 was Teacher Appreciation Week. The children and their families made this week very special for every one of our teachers. Our site supervisor and unit director planned breakfast, lunch and snacks, and certificates of appreciation were given to our hard working teachers. Our teachers were happy to be recognized for their dedication and hard work. A highlight for our kids was when we joined the GWC Child Development Center for a field trip to Centennial Farms.

On Monday May 5, the OVSD nurses came to screen the children’s hearing and vision. They screened 36 children overall. To celebrate

Mother’s Day, the children worked hard on presents, pictures and poems. Our Unit Director and newly appointed Program Director, Mrs. Samantha Hour, along with our Site Supervisor are working hard to complete the NAEYC Candidacy Application that is due May 30, 2008.

April 14-18 we celebrated the Week of The Young Child; this is a nation wide event that recognizes youth ages 0-5. This year’s theme was “Bringing Communities Together for Children.” We celebrated all week long with many activities which included arts and craft projects, breakfast with the parents and a carnival hosted at the Learning Center Preschool.

To end the month we took a field trip to Centennial Farm

Dance and Gymnastics’ programs. Tawny is already underway putting together costumes and dance routines, while Jama’s gymnastics crew is beginning the early stages of their showcase routines. Tawny’s Dance program has grown considerably since her beginnings at the Kid Connection Branch and she now has 190 members enrolled within her classes and many of those members are taking more than one class with the program.

Tawny is making a big difference at our Clubhouse Academy and we appreciate all of the time and energy she puts into the Dance program. Although the Clubhouse Theatre team has wrapped up their performances for the spring, they are already getting underway to prepare for the summer casting. Clubhouse Theatre had audi-tions for the advanced cast’s “Get Smart” and the beginning/ intermediate cast’s “Groovy”. Stay tuned for more Clubhouse Academy news as we head into a very entertaining summer!

Spring sports are already in progress and players are enjoying a thrilling season of safe and fun competition. With 62 teams consisting of 530 players ranging in age from 3 to 15 years old, this spring season guarantees to be memorable. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of our 91 volunteer coaches and assistant coaches who are willing to make a positive difference in the lives of these young athletes. These responsible, caring, adult volunteers truly make a positive impact on each individual athlete enrolled within our sports leagues.

For the Clubhouse Academy, spring also means it is time to prepare for our upcoming showcases from both our

April was a very busy month! April 2nd we held a free dental screening for all the children that was conducted by the Orange County Dental Society, approximately 65 children were screened on this day. With the new California Law that states children must have an oral health assessment before entering kindergarten we provided this great opportunity for our pre-k children.

April 11th our pre-k children were invited to attend the colleges annual Kinder Caminata. This fun filled event is designed to give young children a feel for college life and the importance of attending college. The children joined in on puppet stories, face painting, and visiting with many different career professionals such as the firemen, the mail lady, UPS drivers, etc.
