On May 22 the congregation held it’s annual meeting. We took a moment to appreciate

everything we’ve accomplished in the past year and I summarized my achievements.

First and foremost, my top priority for the synagogue continues to be pastoral care. The

most important thing a synagogue can do for its members is support them in times of

trouble. Thank you to all who have informed me when someone needed a visit from me. If

I’ve let you down by not visiting, please let me know so I can do a better job in the future.

I also continued my mission to build community within Beth Torah, with the Jewish world, and with our

non–Jewish neighbors in DFW. Adiv and I have hosted Shabbat meals and open houses in our home. If

you would like to come to a meal, please don’t be shy to ask—let us know, and we’ll be happy to include

you. I’ve made an effort to attend at least one event for every Congregation Beth Torah auxiliary group.

I’ve participated in many communal events such as the Kosher BBQ, Kosher Chili Cook–Off, Israel

Independence Day celebration at the JCC, and Bagel Run. I gave D'var Torah to Jewish Federation of

Greater Dallas Board, and accompanied CEO of Federation, Bradley Laye, to Houston to meet with Israel’s

Consul General to discuss Jewish pluralism in Israel. I participated on a panel discussing women in

Judaism for Hillels of North Texas as well as served on their board. I joined AJC as a panelist for a debate

on the future of Israel. I gave the D'var Torah at CHAI’s annual meeting. In addition, I went on AIPAC’s

mission to Israel. Please note that Federation is organizing a mission to Israel in February, and I hope

many of us will travel there together.

Starting in June, I will become the Chair of Richardson Interfaith Alliance Steering Committee. Through my

connections with this group I’ve organized and attended many multi–faith and multi–cultural events in

our city and DFW. My goals for the group in my time as its leader are to include more houses of worship in

the alliance, and increase interactions between the alliance and the city. The city’s leadership is

appreciative of its religious diversity, and the Richardson Interfaith Alliance will help our officials in city

hall, on the school board, and in law enforcement to continue to be embrace everyone in the community.

I had a powerful professional development opportunity this year—I joined Leadership Richardson. This is a

leadership program run through the city’s chamber of commerce. I learned about the city’s government,

healthcare, arts, cultural diversity, public education, business and development, social services, and

public safety. I acquired skills and tools in leadership as well as networked with the city’s current and

potential future leaders. I expect these connections will serve our community well for years to come.

Last summer, Beri and I envisioned offering more adult learning opportunities and together made our

vision a reality. Next year, we will continue to enrich the adults in our community with educational

opportunities. My Sunday morning spirituality class and Monday morning Talmud class will continue. In

addition, I will help to teach the Introduction to Judaism class as well as revive Lunch and Learns.

Of course I’ve continued to take an active role with the children in the Learning Center. Just because

you’re young doesn’t mean you’re not a congregant, right? Next year, I’ll continue teaching practical

Judaism as well as developing the children’s spiritual awareness. I’m particularly proud of how the

children are coming along in their knowledge of prayers and Hebrew, as well as their growing ability to

appreciate the splendor and wonder of God’s world.

Finally, I’ve helped expand social action activities at Beth Torah. I’ve supported co–chairs Ruben Granado

and Beth Mond and advocated for making social action a larger portion of Beth Torah’s budget. In

addition to the works of tikun olam we do, I’ve responded to the need to create a separate group of

approximately 30 congregants who want to be involved in addressing justice issues in the public square.

By keeping this group separate, we provide opportunities for both the congregants who want their good

works to intertwine with politics and those that don’t. There’s a way for everyone to be involved in making

our world a better place. I also joined Faith in Texas, an interfaith group that works on justice issues.

It’s been a wonderful year, and I can’t wait to see what we do together next!

First, I want to say thank you to those who were able to attend our annual meeting. I

am honored to continue serving as your president in the upcoming year and

appreciate your confidence in me. I want to welcome the new members of the board;

I look forward to working together. A big thank you to all of the board members who

have completed their terms. For all of our volunteers—you are amazing and I

appreciate all that you do.

Although we think of the summer months being a little less busy, there is still lots on the

calendar over the next couple of months. Please read through the Family Record and find the

wonderful events you would enjoy attending. We are so excited to be celebrating so many Bnai

Mitzvot in June and August! We have a lot to be proud of!

We hear a lot about security in the news these days. I am happy to announce that the Jewish

Federation of Greater Dallas has created a new position, Director of Community Security, to

help the whole community share information and be prepared to keep our community safe.

Marty and I have met with Robert Caltabiano as he is working to get to know every Jewish

organization in Dallas. He has a long history in law enforcement with Homeland Security and

the Secret Service and we look forward to working with him.

Although Beth Torah is proud of our warm, welcoming culture, we need to keep in mind the

changing times in which we live. Please be patient when doors are locked and, importantly,

don’t open them for anyone you don’t know. When you press the buzzer and are asked who

you are, please be respectful and tell us who you are and who you are visiting. Our staff is only

trying to keep all of us and themselves safe. When you arrive after hours, although those

inside hear the buzzer, they will need a couple of minutes to get to the door to let you in. Never

leave the doors unlocked or propped open, as it is an easy opportunity for someone to do you

or the building harm.

On a lighter note, I look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming simchas or fun and

interesting events we have planned this summer. We have another great year ahead of us!

Submissions for the Family Record are welcome! The deadline for each issue is the FIRST OF THE MONTH prior to

FROM CYD FRIEDMAN—PRESIDENT

https://jewishdallas.org/security

The Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas has created the Community Security

Initiative to ensure the Dallas Jewish community is prepared, in a proactive manner,

to handle security issues within our community. Through a series of meetings with

SCN, major donors and the Federation Board, the Community Security Initiative was

approved in February 2017. Major funding is provided by the Korenvaes Family

Foundation in addition to Federation allocations.

Included in the approval is the funding for a Director of Community Security and the

roll-out of Mir3, a community-wide communications platform.

FROM BERI SCHWITZER—DIRECTOR OF CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING

Mission: Make it Jewish. Seems simple enough, doesn’t it? It’s a challenge I give Miriam

and Hannah every summer. Let’s take on a project to learn, to study, and make it

Jewish. Over the years, we have studied Jewish authors and artists, historians and

heroines—and this summer is a big mystery. It might just be that I haven’t had breakfast

yet when I wrote this column, but I have food on the brain. What are ways that you can

make this summer Jewish? See if any of these strike a chord with your family.

The calendar is filled with special days throughout the year. Put your own Jewish twist on these

summer days while you enjoy special foods.

June 12—International Falafel Day: Falafel is a particularly popular food in Israel. Take the

opportunity to connect with Israeli cuisine by making your own falafel and enjoying it in a pita

with hummus and tahini.

June 17—Eat Your Vegetables Day: In the Torah, it says that when God created people, God

instructed them that they have domain over the Earth and that they have a responsibility to

take care of the Earth (Genesis 1:28-30, Genesis 2:15). On Eat Your Vegetables Day, make a

salad with a variety of sustainably produced vegetables. Discuss how you can use the earth’s

resources while continuing to protect those same resources.

July 7—International Chocolate Day: Chocolate is especially important on the Jewish calendar

around Chanukah, when gelt (chocolate coins) is a favorite treat. As you enjoy some chocolate

on International Chocolate Day, think about the Maccabees’ courage in standing up for what

they believed was right and what you can do to make a difference in the world. You can even

make your own chocolate with cocoa powder and common kitchen items or look for Israeli

chocolate at the grocery store.

July 16—National Ice Cream Day: The whole month of July is National Ice Cream Month, but July

16 has been specially set aside as a day to enjoy this tasty, cold treat. This year, National Ice

Cream Day falls during the Three Weeks, on the 22nd of Tammuz, on the Jewish calendar. The

Three Weeks are the days leading up to Tisha b’Av, when we commemorate the destruction of

the first and second Beit Hamikdash (Temple in Jerusalem), which the Talmud tells us

happened because the Jewish people were not being nice to each other. In commemoration of

the Three Weeks, buy a tub of ice cream and work as a team to sculpt a model of the Beit

Hamikdash. As you eat the sculpture, discuss how working together as a team helped the

success of the project.

August 2—Ice Cream Sandwich Day: In Israel, the ice cream sandwich is called a kaseta because

of its resemblance to a tape cassette; and it often contains half chocolate and half vanilla ice

cream. Put on some Israeli music and enjoy eating a kaseta. You can even find Israeli hits from

the 80’s, the heyday of the cassette tape (but you can still play the music through your favorite

digital source). This year, Ice Cream Sandwich Day falls on the day after Tisha B’Av on the

Jewish calendar. There is a tradition that the first Beit Hamikdash (Temple in Jerusalem)

continued to burn into the morning of the 10th of Av, so I recommend waiting until the

afternoon to begin your ice cream sandwich party.

Many thanks to all of the donors and volunteers who contributed their time and money to make

the CLC weekend happen this year! It was a thrill to see the 3rd graders receive their new siddurim

and to celebrate the entire weekend with the enthusiasm of our families. We started a new

tradition this year by giving the third graders a new prayer book. The orange, Mikdash M’at or

Small Sanctuary, is a beautiful guide to our liturgy with full color artwork that provides a visual

interpretation to accompany the service as well as insightful commentaries that explain the

structure of the service and the meaning of the prayers. We look forward to sharing this new

siddur with all of our participants at Junior Congregation!

Page 10 | Congregation Beth Torah monthly Family Record

Jewish law states, “Do not to separate yourself from the community.” I find this odd for two

reasons. First, why would the rabbis need to tell us to seek community? Don’t most of us have

a natural urge to be a part of a community? Secondly, why would they consider this to be an

important mitzvah?

While it can be wonderful to be a part of a community, it can also be hurtful. In those

moments, it’s tempting to give up on the community and break relations. This halacha tells us

to stay put, communicate our needs and hurts, and grow from the experience with our

neighbors and friends.

Working through our differences with a community takes spiritual and emotional effort. Why

should we go to all that trouble? The sages tell us that while the individual and his

contributions to the world fade away after a generation, the accomplishments of the

community are eternal. We pass down our values to the generation following us so that they

too will create community.

Sisterhood Book Club 19 July, Wednesday, 7:30 PM

The Secret Chord by Geraldine Brooks

Brooks takes on one of literature’s richest and most

enigmatic figures: a man who shimmers between

history and legend. Peeling away the myth to bring

David to life in Second Iron Age Israel, Brooks traces

the arc of his journey from obscurity to fame, from

shepherd to soldier, from hero to traitor, from

beloved king to murderous despot and into his

remorseful and diminished dotage. The Secret

Chord provides new context for some of the best-

known episodes of David’s life while also focusing

on others, even more remarkable and emotionally

intense, that have been neglected. We see David

through the eyes of those who love him or fear

him—from the prophet Natan, voice of his

conscience, to his wives Mikhal, Avigail, and

Batsheva, and finally to Solomon, the late-born son

who redeems his Lear-like old age.

Book Club will meet at the home of Laurie Sutkin. Please RSVP to Laurie at [email protected]

so she can plan accordingly.

Close to 40 years ago, Ellen and Gary Ackerman’s precious daughter Sara passed away due to congenital

coronary issues. This was a tragic event felt by the entire Beth Torah family. In her memory, the Sara

Ackerman Fund was established.

Two years ago, when the Inclusion Initiative came into being, the Ackermans re-dedicated the fund for

inclusion purposes to support children who face barriers to participating fully in the synagogue and in the

Learning Center. Recently, the Sara Ackerman Fund was accessed to purchase iPads and fidgets for use

in the Learning Center. These items help students who may deal with a myriad of issues that prevent

them from learning or focusing with ease.

Sara was a beautiful soul who gave joy and inspiration to all who met her. It is by means of the fund that

bears her name that she continues to live and contribute to the lives of other children. Thank you, Ellen

and Gary, for sharing your daughter with us all these past years and for those in the future.

What a fabulous year we have had as a synagogue! And what a fabulous year we have had as an

Inclusion Initiative! It is hard to fathom that the Inclusion Initiative is only completing its second year.

Barely completing it. Our Inclusion Initiative committee has plans for this next year to expand, enrich, and

build upon the foundation that has been laid. We have developed a community presence, as you will see

as the year unfolds.

Please circle the following dates on your calendar—July 20 is the second offering of The Conversation

Project. At that time, we will open our doors to members of Temple Emanu-El, an eager new partner in our

inclusion endeavors. The Conversation Project prepares us for sharing with our loved ones our end of life

wishes. This relates to how we want to live as we approach the end of our lives rather than how we want

to die. That is a big difference. For clarification and details, you will just have to attend. Watch the weekly

announcements and Facebook for further information. You will definitely want to reserve a seat.

On July 22, CBT will observe our summer Inclusion Shabbat. In the past, aliyot were offered to members

involved with Inclusion. The committee has now been offered the additional opportunity to recommend

service leaders as well as Torah and Haftorah readers. This is truly an honor. Our own Harriet Gross will

be sharing thoughts from the Bimah that morning.

We anticipate, in collaboration with the Social Action committee, bringing Jewish Family Service’s The

Inclusion Experience to our synagogue. Other congregations will be joining us at the event and we are

proud to be at the vanguard of this community partnership.

The financial commitment of our membership in donating to the Inclusion Fund has enabled us to take

actions in the support of inclusion efforts especially as regards streaming. The costs of both equipment

and monthly fees are paid for from the fund rather than from the synagogue budget. Thank you to all who

made donations. Your generosity is very much appreciated. If you have not done so yet, remember to

request access to streaming each month at [email protected]. You never know when

you might need it.

Beth Torah has benefitted from the Inclusion Initiative and congregants are extremely grateful. Thank you

to the Inclusion Initiative committee for your dedication and hard work—Ellen Ackerman, Gary Ackerman,

Esther Cohen, Devon Collins, Miriam Creemer, Sharon Fried, Fern Gerstein, Harriet Gross, Ivan Kaufman,

Roberta Lazarus, Bob Levinson, Susan Shapiro, Jeff Silver, Francine Simpson, Shirley Strauss, and Chair

Zelene Lovitt. Thank you to Rabbi Zelony, Beri Schwitzer, and Executive Committee Liaison Vikki Silvis for

your support and encouragement.

TISHA B'AV SERVICES Please join Congregation Beth Torah together

with other Dallas area Conservative

congregations in observance of Tisha B'Av.

This 24–hour fast commemorates the

destruction of the Holy Temples, as well as other

calamities that have befallen the Jewish people.

By remembering these chapters of our history,

we become ever more grateful for the gift of

Jewish life we have today, and hopefully more

committed to preserving it for ourselves and

future generations.

We will gather for evening services and a

candlelight reading of Eicha, the biblical scroll of

Lamentations.

We will reconvene at Levine Academy for

Mincha—the afternoon service—when it is

customary to wear tallis and tefillin that

afternoon instead of that morning.

Tuesday afternoon, August 1 (time TBD)

Levine Academy, 18011 Hillcrest Rd., Dallas

Monday evening, July 31 (time TBD)

LIGHTING A CANDLE Perhaps the best known custom for

observing a Yahrzeit is lighting a candle

made to burn for at least 24 hours. We light

the candle at home on the evening that the

Yahrzeit begins. It is a symbol of the soul

and spirit of the deceased. If a Yahrzeit falls

on Shabbat or a Holiday, the candle is

typically lit before the Shabbat or holiday

candles. Although there is no formal blessing

when lighting the candle, a meditation may

be said. It is appropriate, of course, to use

your own words and thoughts.

ATTENDING SERVICES The Yahrzeit observance lasts a full day and

it is customary to attend services on the

Shabbat before the Yahrzeit. You will receive

a reminder from the office each year,

sharing with you the date in which the name

of your loved one will be read, and the name

will be read prior to the Kaddish prayer.

Should you wish to change the date in which

you want the name to be read, please

contact the Synagogue office at

972.234.1542 x221.

TZEDAKAH It is traditional to do Tzedakah—righteous

acts of charitable giving—when observing

a Yahrzeit to honor the memory of the

deceased. The annual reminders you receive

from the shul includes a donation slip if you

wish to give to Beth Torah.

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word meaning “a year’s time”

and it is the remembrance of the anniversary of a

loved one’s death. It is observed each year on the

date of death.

One of the many services that Congregation Beth

Torah offers to its members is the reminder of

family yahrzeits. Yahrzeit is the memorialization of a

loved one on the anniversary of their death. It is a

very emotional time for family and friends of the

deceased and, at CBT, we do our best to ensure

that yahrzeits are announced and family members

are notified in a timely manner. We depend on the

family to inform us of the date of a loved one’s

death. It is the tradition at CBT, and of Conservative

congregations in general, to observe a yahrzeit

based on the Hebrew calendar. To make it easy for

those congregants who may not be familiar with the

Hebrew calendar, we ask for the secular calendar

date and we make the conversion. However, while a

day on the secular calendar starts at 12:00 AM,

midnight, and goes through 11:59 PM, the day on

the Hebrew calendar starts at sundown and goes

through sundown. Therefore, it is very important

that when you report the date of a yahrzeit, you

must specify whether the death occurred before or

after sundown on the secular date so that we can

convert it to the correct Hebrew date. If you are not

sure if it was before or after sundown, provide the

date and the time of death (always listed on the

death certificate) and we will determine when

sundown was.

QUESTIONS? If you have any questions about yahrzeit dates, or anything having to do with the rituals and customs

surrounding the end of life experience, contact—

Rabbi Zelony ([email protected])

Ritual Committee ([email protected])

Cemetery Committee ([email protected])

ALL ABOUT YAHRZEITS

Page 17 | Congregation Beth Torah monthly Family Record

Although there is no prescribed prayer for

lighting a yahrzeit candle, you might

include the following meditation in

addition to your own personal memories:

I haven't forgotten you, even though it's

been some time now since I've seen

your face, touched your hand, heard

your voice. You are with me all the time.

I used to think you left me. I know better

now. You come to me. Sometimes in

fleeting moments I feel your presence

close by. But I still miss you. And

nothing, no person, no joy, no

accomplishment, no distraction, not

even God, can fill the gaping hole your

absence has left in my life. But mixed

together with all the sadness, there is a

great joy for having known you. I want to

thank you for the time we shared, for the

love you gave, for the wisdom you

spread. Thank you for the magnificent

moments and for the ordinary ones too.

There was beauty in our simplicity.

Holiness in our unspectacular days. And

I will carry the lessons you taught me

always. Your life has ended, but your

light can never be extinguished. It

continues to shine upon me even on the

darkest nights and illuminates my way. I

light this candle in your honor and in

your memory. May God bless you as you

have blessed me with love, with grace,

and with peace. Amen.
