Former FPSC Family Finds Opportunities in Northeastern PA A young couple with a baby girl were guests of Family Promise of Salem County for about

five months. The father was working but was not making enough money to support the

family. When an opportunity for a job came up working for his brother in Northeastern

Pennsylvania, the family decided to move out of Pennsville. Before they committed to the move, they were

able to find an affordable apartment and the mother was able to find a job as a cook in a local restaurant and

affordable childcare for their daughter.■

Family of 7 Finds Housing ! After months of paying off debt, saving money and seeking affordable housing, a Mom and Dad and their

five children found a house to rent that is affordable and big enough for their entire family. While the family

was in the FPSC network, the father who was previously unemployed, found a full-time job. With the help of

the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of the Delaware Valley, the family was able to develop a budget

and receive credit scores. Over time, they successfully paid off the balance on their vehicle and repaid past

due electric bills. They kept current with their auto insurance and made payments toward a other debts.

The family began attending the First Baptist Church of Salem while staying in the network. Grateful for the

help Family Promise provided to them, they decided to attend training to become FPSC volunteers during

First Baptist of Salem’s Host Weeks. The whole family provided a few meals and served food to our current

guests. On several occasions, both parents have stayed overnight separately to serve as Overnight Hosts.

Having experienced living in the in network as guests and now serving as volunteers, the family can provide

valuable insight about ways to improve accommodations for future families we serve. ■

Pennsville High School Students Form Family Promise Teens Community Service Group

Members of the Family Promise Teens

raised more than $700 for the Kids

Helping Kids Walk and Fun Day.

When high school students from Pennsville High School learned about Family

Promise of Salem County at a Career Day, they wanted to help. With the

guidance of FPSC Board of Trustee member Christine Hoehn, a group of 22

students formed Family Promise Teens.

So far the teens have volunteered their time at the May 20 Spaghetti Dinner

fundraiser and the June 4 “Kids Helping Kids” Walk and Fun Day. They have

made dinner for the families and hosted an ice cream party for children at the

Family Center. The teens solicited donations for the party from Hudock’s and

Pennsville Custard Stands, Walmart and Acme.

Currently the group is making tie-dyed T-shirts to sell at Pennville’s

Septemberfest. Donations of new white T-shirts in any size are needed.■

entrees and desserts. Tasters voted for their favorites in each category. A basket

auction featuring 77 different baskets, each valued at $50 or more, were donated by

local businesses and organizations. In addition to basket auction tickets, patrons

purchased 50-50 raffle tickets and the 2010-11 Family Promise Discount Card,

enabling them to save throughout the year at several Salem County businesses.

According to “Taste of South Jersey” Chairperson Christine Hoehn, “This year’s

fundraiser promises to be even better. But our success depends on the continued

support of our community.” Here are some ways you can help. (E-mail Christine at

[email protected] for more information, or to participate.)

Taste of South Jersey fundraiser.
