This December marks the 70th anniversary of the attackon Pearl Harbor. We will observe this on Dec. 7, asNational Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, proclaimedby the President last year so that we will never forget the3,500 U.S. service members and civilians who werekilled in action or injured on that fateful Sunday in 1941.

Due to the fact that many families will be driving longdistances during the holiday breaks and due to theinclement weather conditions for travelers, we added apage in this newsletter full of safe-driving tips.

    Being Thankful

    Chaplain Michael Tomlinson

As many of us indulged in a large dinner lastmonth, we were celebrating the first of a series of

occasions of reflection during Americas holiday season. There is an old saying, the victors write history. In thewake of the War Between the States (1861-1865),history took a decidedly northeastern flavor. This is bestillustrated by Americas First Thanksgiving. Do youreally know when and where the first Thanksgiving washeld in what was to become the United States ofAmerica? (Hint: the Pilgrims werent there.)

Many believe the first Thanksgiving in America washeld by theSpanish in Texasthats right, Texas! Theyear was 1541, which was 79 years before the seasickPilgrims left the Mayflower and set foot in the NewWorld. Florida also lays claim to an early or the firstThanksgiving in Spanish Saint Augustine in 1565, whichwas 56 years before the one held in Plymouth.

It is believed wild turkey (the bird, not thKentucky bourbon) was probably served at thiThanksgiving ceremony, originating this traditionThe first Thanksgiving in a British or Englishspeaking colony was 1607 in Virginia, or 14 yearbefore the Pilgrims got lost and settled in NewEngland. Take your pick for the Firs

Thanksgiving, but it wasnt the Pilgrims inMassachusetts.

Actually, there have been many Thanksgivingdays in American history. Our currencelebration on the last Thursday of November waestablished by Congress in 1941. Some believeFranklin Roosevelt cynically set the date for lateNovember, hoping to encourage better Christmasales despite the Great Depression. Whatever thereason, the tradition of Thanksgiving on the lasThursday of November is now part of theAmerican fabric.

But do we really need a congressionally mandatedday to give thanks? No! If youre healthy, have

loving family, plenty of food to eat, a roof oveyour head and a job, then youve got things to bthankful for. If you are a person of faith, youknow every day is a day to give thanks, becauseGod is in your life. Being thankful is more thanwords; it is a mindset or a way of living call it athankful lifestyle Buddha illustrated it this wayLet us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn'

learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and ifwe didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sickand if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let uall be thankful. Now thats a thankful mindset.
