Summer 2012 Issue 22

Dear Students and Families: We hope you are enjoying your summer. Hopefully, you have had plenty of opportunities to create long-lasting memories with family and friends. If you’re anything like us, you’ve likely spent at least a little bit of your summer looking forward to an exciting school year at Iowa State! While you’ve hopefully been enjoying some time in the sun, we’ve been at work preparing for the first step in your official Cyclone

experience. It all starts with move-in day and we’re proud to be the departments who get to welcome you to the cardinal and gold campus! In this newsletter, you’ll find some helpful information to get you acquainted with the move-in process as well as an understanding of what you can expect from our departments this fall. We’re more than just a place to live or eat. We’re here to create a community, to foster

new friendships, and to encourage our students to learn and to grow. We hope you see this the moment you stop foot on campus! As always, if you have any questions, we’re happy to hear from our students and families. Please feel free to contact us at 515-294-2900 or [email protected] and [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you this fall. Go Cyclones!

Don’t Miss MAP-Works

For some students, it’s the class work. For others, it’s making new friends or managing time or money. Each student faces different challenges when they come to campus. That’s why the Department of Residence offers MAP-Works, an online assessment tool designed to help students make a successful transition to life at Iowa State. Utilized by over 85% of on-campus, first-year, first-time freshmen, MAP-Works is a 20 minute assessment that helps students identify areas where they may or may not struggle in their transition to college. Offered early in the fall semester, MAP-Works allows students to get instant assessment results they can share with their hall director or academic advisor. With the information they provide from their assessment, ISU staff can connect them with the on-campus resources they need

to achieve long-term academic and personal success. It is the Department of Residence’s goal to provide a community that supports students’ learning and development. MAP-Works is just one of many resources provided to students while they live on campus. Students who participated in the MAP-Works assessment during Fall 2011 recorded final GPAs .37 higher than those who did not complete the assessment. Whether it’s connecting your student to the Hixson-Lied Academic Success Center or simply taking the time to talk or to introduce your student to new opportunities, we’re here to help your student succeed. Encourage your student to participate in MAP-Works as the first step in a successful journey to graduation day!

Before it’s time to gather up some belongings and bring your student to his or her new Cyclone home, have your student take one more look at his or her meal plan. To help you finalize your meal plan selection, here are a few answers to the most commonly asked meal plan questions.

What’s the best way to determine which meal plan my student should use?

If your student is required to have a meal plan, take some time and figure out how many meals your student typically eats in a week. Knowing how often your student will be on campus over weekends and how often they will eat a full breakfast will help you decide which option will work best. For example, if your student eats two meals each day and an apple

FAQ

for breakfast, the Gold plan’s roughly 14 meals per week would be a great choice.

Can I still change my meal plan?

You have all summer to change your meal plan up until Aug. 24. Any meals you eat between Aug. 14 and 24 will be charged to your meal plan regardless of which one you select. After Aug. 24, you can upgrade your plan to one with more meals, but you cannot change your meal plan to one with fewer meals. However, meal blocks and Dining Dollar$ can still be added.

What if my student has classes over lunch or dinner? What are the options?

Union Drive Marketplace and Conversations Dining both offer continuous service throughout the day. Plus, they can always grab a meal bundle at one

of six ISU Dining retail locations.

Is there a “to-go” option?

Yes, your student can purchase an ISU Dining To-Go Container for $6 and use it in any of our dining centers. Meal bundles are also to go!

Do you offer any assistance to students with special dietary needs?

Yes, we can help your student with food allergies, dietary restrictions, or any other type of dietary need. For food allergies, your student can contact Sue Philbrook at 515-294-4155 or [email protected] to plan weekly menus. Contact your dining center manager for menus featuring other dietary needs.Additionally, nutritional content is posted on our website, in our dining centers, and on some of our retail products.
