Are you the parent of a child aged 2 years 9 months to 4 years 6 months?

Does your child constantly move around, fi dget and wriggle, not listen to you or talk too much? Is this behaviour diffi cult for you to manage at home during meal and playtimes or watching TV, and when you are out and about, shopping, or visiting?

Support for you and your child

Researchers from the University of Nottingham are inviting local families to take part in an innovative research project with the chance to participate in parenting programmes designed to help you manage your child’s behaviour and improve family life. This will take just 1 to 2 hours each week for a period of 12 weeks.

Our next parenting programmes will begin in April 2013.

Languages have been a passion of mine since childhood. Having lived and worked in France, I gained a degree in French on returning to the UK. When I became a mum to 2 boys, I became fascinated with how children learn and particularly in how they acquire language with all its irregularities and I began running

fun French clubs for children. Having broken my back whilst heavily pregnant, limiting my ability to cope with full-time work, I took time to reconsider my career options and chose to train as a primary school teacher. I now teach part-time in a wonderful school and run French clubs in Woodthorpe on Tuesdays and Saturdays. It is so rewarding to see children inspired and having fun whilst gaining an invaluable skill: A former club member has recently returned to me for work experience having gained an honours degree in French!

‘Little Wickets’ was born as I watched my son and daughter (then both under 5) joyfully whack a ball around on a chilly Cornish Beach. It was time for Toddler & Under 7s cricket fun. With inspirational, properly qualifi ed and vetted kids’ cricket coaches on board the fi rst sessions started in June 2011.

Between family life and raising two small children, starting up a new activity business was initially tough going but huge demand and positive feedback kept me going. Parents clearly appreciate that I approach it as a Mum with the kids’ fun and participation at the heart of everything Little Wickets does.From just two sessions a week to14 now and more planned there are many new challenges on the horizon. It is wonderful to watch all the kids (especially my two) develop valuable physical and life skills through the coaches’ energy, enthusiasm and commitment. It’s defi nitely time for some assistance from a like minded person who wants the opportunity and fl exibility working with Little Wickets can offer. Interested? Let me know!

Some classes are very popular and you may need to think ahead and put your child’s name on the waiting list. Be aware of possible additional costs for materials, clothes or equipment, many clubs and

groups run a second hand or exchange scheme which can be a big help. Where possible keep it local, travelling long distances for short sessions can add to the costs and rapidly become a chore. Easter Card for Gran!Fold a piece of card fi rmly and draw an egg shape from the folded edge. Cut the egg out leaving about 2-3cm of the folded edge intact.Your child can decorate the front with tissue, felt tips, wrapping paper, ribbon...whatever you have. Faberge or ‘Freestyle’ it will be loved! Inside thecard they can stick a photo of themselves on the right and write their message on the left.

Stained Glass EggsCut a large egg shape out of greaseproof paper. Cut different coloured tissue papers into squares and paste randomly on to the egg shape using pva glue, leave to dry. On a piece of black card draw round the egg shape and then draw cutting lines up to 1cm inside and outside the line.

Put a second piece of card underneath and cut out the centre and round the outside to form two frames. Put glue one frame and stick the ‘window’ on top, put glue on one side of the sec-ond frame and sandwich the window between the two frames. Punch a hole in the top of the frame, thread ribbon or wool through and tie a loop and hang in the window.

Egg Games! Hard boil some eggs, cool and let the kids decorate them or draw their faces on them with felt tips. Once dry you can have egg and spoon races, perhaps around an obstacle course for extra fun, or roll them down slopes or ramps in the garden - weather permitting!

Open Days & Visits! Visiting and choosing a new school for your child can be a daunting process whatever their age. Here are our top tips to help you fi nd the right school for you and your family. 1. Open Days are a great opportunity for you

and your child to see what the school is like, talk to students and staff and fi nd out more about its curriculum, after school activities and overall ethos. If the open day visit goes well, make an appointment to visit on a normal school day to get a real fl avour of what the school is like and try to include a break time in your visit if you can.

2. Look at the work on display. Is it vibrant, exciting and new? Does it show a broad range of abilities and skills? And does it demonstrate that the school both values its pupils and encourages all of them to be proud of their achievements? 3. Meet the Head. They are responsible for the

school’s ethos, academic focus, discipline and the pastoral care and support it can offer. Take the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have. 4. Talk to the pupils. Children are often the school’s best advert and are usually very honest

about how they feel! In class do they seem happy, engaged and inspired? Is there a good atmosphere at break time?

5. Talk to as many parents as you can and get a balance of opinions.

6. Be prepared! Before you visit a school, look at the website, read the prospectus and go with a list of questions that you want to ask and things you want to look for.

7. Trust your instincts. The school has to be right for both you and your child and remember that what is right for one child may not be right for another.

New Youth Theatre is extremely pleased to announce that their next Junior production (for children aged 3-12 years) will be “Guys and Dolls Jnr”. Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, this Broadway classic introduces us to colourful characters who have become such legends: Sarah Brown, the up¬right but uptight “mission doll,” out to reform the evildoers of Times Square;

Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, the nightclub performer whose chronic cold is brought on by the fact she’s been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fi ancé, desperate as always to fi nd a spot for his infamous fl oating crap game. The New Youth Theatre concept is simple. Children between the ages of 3-17 years are taught how to develop and improve their performing arts skills whilst rehearsing for a fully staged musical each term.
