To make and grow Disciples of Jesus by our Prayers, Worship, Service and Mutual Accountability. How many mes have we sat in worship at Gardendale Mt. Vernon and said “God is good, all the me, and all the me, God is good”? Probably too many to count. And how many mes have you heard this pastor (Jake) talk about how good God is, and how there really is no mystery about it? Many! Yes, I realize that it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that some of the things that I say end up sounding like a broken record. However, God’s goodness is just so evident to me that I can’t help but say it all of the me. Living in a culture where we are surrounded by so many things that aren’t good, I can’t help but to try to remind myself and others of just how good God is. But I’ve had another thought recently. Not only is God good, but things of God are good as well. Specifically, His bride, the church. Jesus said these words “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” Mahew 16:18 ESV. So from the mouth of Jesus, in a conversaon where Jesus is addressing Peter, Jesus tells him that the gates of hell will not prevail against God’s church. That’s encouraging. In a day where it seems that there are many things for “church folk” to see as negave about the state of the church and the culture in which it exists, it’s easy to see the negave while forgeng that God’s promises are “yes and amen”! God keeps all of His promises and one of His promises is that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church. That promise alone should infuse His church with confidence and faith. As you read this I pray that it does! That being said let’s celebrate the good things that are going on at GMV during this season. In August, the Kingdom Kids consignment sale raised a record number of money for missions by surpassing the mark by $8000. That’s work that is done for the Kingdom! And that is good. This past summer a number of youth in the youth ministry gave their lives to Jesus. That’s always good! We also wrapped up the summer with our first “Mega Sports Camp”. This was an effort by Amy and our children’s commiee to take the VBS week and reach more people. And it was accomplished. We saw more new faces that week than we saw at VBS last year. That is really good! And let’s not forget our new partnership with GracePoint at Mt. Ol- ive. Because of the new infused energy from leadership from this church, being shared with that church, there is a new since of excitement at GracePoint. For example, Amy Sizemore is currently leading the chil- dren’s ministry commiee at GracePoint in launching their first Children’s worship service to run congru- ently with the 11am worship service. This is definitely good! On that note, there is definitely excitement in both churches as we plan the Beer Together worship service at 10:30am on September 23. Make plans to be there to celebrate God’s goodness in the Kingdom! It’s good that GMV is serving the people of North Jefferson County! Let’s focus on that in these days. God is good! How many times have we sat in worship at Gardendale Mt. Vernon and said “God is good, all the time, and all the time, God is good”? Probably too many to count. DISCIPLESHIP & COVENANT GROUPS

Childcare provided for preschool and under.

“NONES” and the “DONES”- Facilitator: Pastor Steve Baccus Beginning Wednesday, Sept 12 at 6:00pm in the Sanctuary Over 4,000 churches close each year in America. More and more people are “done” with church. More and more peo-ple have never been a part of the church (the “Nones”) and see the church as completely irrelevant to their lives. This will be a discussion group format. The primary text are the Bible and a book entitled, “Why Nobody Wants to Go to Church Anymore, and How 4 Acts of Love Will Make Your Church Irresistible.” Email Pastor Steve at [email protected] if you are interested in attending, or if you want a book. Drop-in attendees are welcome. This will be a 6-8 week class. MISSING PIECES- Facilitator: Cathy Harris Wednesdays at 6:30pm in room 304 Does God really care? Is He there and is He fair? Although we know all the right answers, they don’t always feel right. What are the missing pieces? CREED- Facilitator: Chester Jolly Wednesdays at 6:30pm in room 319 Adam Hamilton’s new book Creed uses the Apostles Creed to look at what Christians believe, why we believe and why that belief matters. GRIEVING WITH HOPE- Facilitator: Heather Cason Wednesdays at 6:30pm in room 210 (Parlor) Practical and straightforward, yet warm and compassionate, this study clarifies the popular misconception that people move through stages of grief. The reality is that grieving people jump back and forth between different emotions, sometimes wrestling with multiple emotions at once. DISCIPLE I - Facilitator: Carolyn Smith Wednesdays at 6:00pm in room 209 This 23 week fast track study helps us to grow in becoming disciples through Bible study. The first 12 weeks concentrates on the Old Testament. DISCIPLE IV- Facilitator: Billie Sue Hulsey Wednesdays at 6:00pm in room 212 This 24 week study examines the connection between memory and identity as people of God. Participants will find common themes, including calls to remember, calls to repent, calls for renewal, and calls for community. FINANCIAL PEACE- Facilitator: Susan Ernst Wednesdays at 6:30pm in the Library Financial Peace is a money-management class by Dave Ramsey. You will be walked through the basics of budgeting, dumping debt, planning for the future and much more. GO FISH- Facilitator: Bill Couch Wednesdays at 6:30pm This is a DVD study by Andy Stanley that will help take the struggle out of sharing your faith. THE CLASS MEETING- Facilitator: Pastor Jake Barrett Wednesdays in September at 6:30pm– 7:30pm at GracePoint Church The goal of this class is to un-pack the need for and specifics of Accountability Groups in the church of Jesus Christ. The class will be offered to people from both GMV and GracePoint. If you are interested in being part of a Community Group or forming one of your own you are encouraged to attend this class. Towards the end of the month of Septem-ber, we will begin to form Community Groups in two different ways. First, potential facilitator’s and/or host will be identified from both churches and groups will be formed to begin the first week of October. Second, we will encourage people who believe God is calling them to begin a Community Group to let Pastor Jake know that they are interested in doing so. These types of Community Groups may be the kinds of groups that are more affinity specific. Meaning, you may fee like God is calling you to start a group made up of single moms or stay at home dads .

DISCIPLESHIP & COVENANT GROUPS

Childcare provided for preschool and under.

WOMEN’S ACCOUNTIBILITY GROUP: Meets each Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m. in the room 304. The group was formed to afford a safe and confidential space within our GMVUMC Church’s congregation where ladies can come together and address in a group setting questions such as:

Where have I seen Jesus at work in my life this week? How have I been the hands and feet of Jesus in the world in which I live this week? How have I failed to respond to His calling in my life this week? What are my plans for study, service, and worship this coming week?

From these questions, lively discussions are born and participants are given the opportunity to share what is on their heart and pray with and for each other. Co-leaders are Suzanne Frazier (602-4332) and Pam Irons (746-05290). If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to call either of them. Some of the group members have these things to say about their experience in participating.

Participating in the Women’s Accountability Group has caused me to recognize the ways that God is active in my life. Through the kindness of many people in the recent weeks following my knee replacement surgery, my needs have been met. Only God stirs hearts to be so generous. When I returned to the group recently, I was anxious to share my experiences and give praise to our Lord. – Katherine Bellenger

It is not a Bible study, not a book study. It is just women sharing our Christian walk: The good we felt in the previous week as well as the times we failed Him and ourselves and the acknowledgement from each other that we are not alone either. This group is simply a blessing! -- Mary Lou Hughes

Initially I was skeptical of participating in the Women’s Accountability Group because it wasn’t a traditional Bible study. What I have found is that it is a safe place to share whatever it is that is troubling me as well as my mountain tops. I also see how I can be an encouragement to others. God wants us to be there for one another and that can only happen when we come together. -- Diana Jeffreys CLASS ON PRAYER- Facilitator: Pam Irons Wednesdays at 6:30pm in the small dining room In Matthew 21:13 Jesus declared, “My house shall be called a house of prayer.” Our study will use the book “Praying Grace: Training for Personal Ministry” to instruct and equip for ministering to others through prayer. SMALL GROUP- Facilitator: Shelby Haygood & Christi Howell Wednesdays at 6:30pm off campus This is a study of the book of Genesis. Contact Shelby at 999-8611 for more information. FAITH SISTER’S BIBLE STUDY- Facilitator: Billie Sue Hulsey Tuesday mornings at 10:00am in room 212 COFFEE & CHRIST- Facilitator- Mark Ford Tuesday mornings at 10:00am in the Small Dining Room FIVE MARKS OF A METHODIST- Facilitator: Farris Cason Sundays at 4:00pm in the Library What is it that marks us as Methodist? This men’s Bible study helps to define us as a Methodist, what we believe and how we demonstrate our beliefs to others. SMALL GROUP- Facilitator- Rachel Hodges & Barbara Patmon Meets on Sundays once a month at the Hodges home. This group is designed for young couples. Our main focus is to pray over our families and children and encourage, support and do life together. Contact Rachel at [email protected]/ 586-7740 for more information.
