Course Description
• Discussions about daily life when living away from home.
• Topics include kitchen basics, food budgeting, consumer economics, global food issues, interior decorating, basic sewing and community service.
Pennsylvania State Standards• Understand how to develop and
adhere to a budget.• Know and apply consumer rights
and responsibilities• Identify careers in Family and
Consumer Sciences.• Identify services that communities
provide for individuals and families.• Evaluate and plan a living space.• Explain how scientific &
technological developments enhance our food supply.
• Evaluate the role of government in safeguarding our food.
Family & Community Studies
• This is a one semester class.
• Students will spend a good portion of class time working in the kitchens, and the remainder on individual and group projects.
• Assignments, projects and class activities will be done in class—students should not have homework in this class!
Course of Study
• Kitchen Basics—2 weeks• Food Budget—2 week• Food Supply Chain—5 weeks• Global Hunger—3 weeks• Consumer R&R—2 weeks• Project Linus Blankets—4 weeks• Interior Design—2 weeks
Washington City Mission Trip
• Provides critically needed goods and services to homeless,
poor, and needy of Western Pennsylvania
• Students will plan, prepare meals and conduct cost analysis
• Interested students will attend the field trip and serve a meal.

Project Linus• Mission--to provide love, a sense
of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets.
• Student groups will create a handmade flannel blanket.
• Students will design the blanket, choose fabrics, and use both hand sewing and machine sewing.
