Though the Indian Catholic Community (ICC) is not a full-fledged

parish community, it has a categorical status as an immigrant language Community among many other language denominations within the boundary of the Archdiocese of Vienna.

It functions exactly like a parish community with the guidance of the

present Chaplain, Dr. Thomas Thandappilly CST, who had completed his doctorate in Pastoral Theology in the Vienna University. Fr. Saju Sharat IMS was the assistant Chaplain of the ICC till December 2005.

In October 2001, the Parish Church Maria Lourdes was assigned to

the ICC in Vienna. The present Chaplain, who was residing in this parish, was appointed by Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn as the Vicar of this Austrian parish from 1st July 2005.

The Indian Catholic Community is also made available the chapel of

Maria Hilfe in Stadlau as a substation for its catechetical and liturgical services.

The Indian Catholic Community in the Archdiocese of Vienna

History: 1. It can be noted that from 1966 onwards, a handful of people from Kerala was brought in or migrated to Austria for employment or for studies and/or for religious services, especially in the field of nursing services. Due to dire dearth of nurses, more and more migrated to Austria for employment since the second half of 1970’s. These unmarried girls, who have been working in India, migrated to Austria. Except two or three, the most of them got married in India and brought their husbands to set up a family here. They also encouraged their interested relatives to follow them, either to find work or to study here and then to join local requirement for employees in the medical sector. Thus the number increased.

2. The first arrivals, as their custom and tradition among the migrant Malayalees, have started to come together and form some kind of associations, with regular monthly meetings with Mass in Malayalam for which the priests - Rev. Fr. Augustine Thottakkara CMI, and Rev. Dr. Antony Kolencherry, MSFS, who were students here in the University of Vienna - attended partially to the pastoral needs of the Community. Since both of them had to go away, the members of the Community took initiative in the beginning of 80’s to correspond with the Archdiocese and the Congregation of Mary Immaculate (CMI) in India. As a result, the Afro-Asian Institute (AAI)) had made arrangements for inviting a CMI Priest to look into the spiritual needs of the Indian Christian Community, though not exclusively for this purpose, but the priest can make some studies further in Vienna and attached to a Parish as the parish assistant. At the same time, Fr. Fernandes Noronha of the Archdiocese of Vienna tried to organize the different Afro-Asian Christian Communities in Vienna.

Recognition: 3. The Indian Catholic Community in Vienna was constituted in 1982. Rev. Fr. Parakkatel CMI was sponsored by the Afro-Asian Institute to come to Vienna in order to look into the spiritual matters of the Indian Christians in Austria, providing a forum for them to preserve and foster their religious, moral, social, cultural, educational, literary and artistic heritage and to transmit this unique heritage to the future generations. The Archdiocese of Vienna recognized officially the Indian Catholic Community (ICC) on 1st April 1982 and appointed Fr. Paul Parakkattel CMI as its Chaplain. The predominant and later the exclusive participants of the Indian Catholic Community were the immigrants of India in the Archdiocese of Vienna, who have the language of Malayalam as their mother tongue. The ICC consists predominantly of the members of the Syro Malabar Church and therefore the liturgical services are conducted on Sundays and Feast Days in the Syro Malabar Rite. Occasionally there are services in the Latin Rite and in the Syro Malankara Rite. The Archdiocese of Vienna promotes the ecclesial, liturgical, pastoral and cultural heritage of the immigrant Malayalees of all Rites, who remain united as a Malayalee Catholic Community which functions exactly like a Parish under the guidance of the Rector of the Afro-Asian and Latin American Communities of the Archdiocese of Vienna. Seelsorger (Chaplain): The Chaplain of the Community remained attached to an Austrian Parish where he served as the Assistant Parish Priest or to a Convent for Rev. Sisters whom he helped in their spiritual and liturgical matters. Later on, the Chaplain was given a residence in an Austrian Parish, where he could do some liturgical services on occasions of pastoral need.

George Kochukarottu, till 2001. (1999 - 2001) 5. The Archdiocese of Vienna appointed Pater Dr. Thomas Thandapilly CST, who had completed his doctorate in Pastoral Theology in the Vienna University, as the Chaplain of the

Indian Catholic Community in 2001 and also as Vicar of Pfarre Maria Lourdes in 2005. Residence: Pfarre Maria Lourdes, A-1120 Vienna, Tivoligasse 20 Tel: 817 42 06 (069911966771) Email: [email protected] A Volunteer Committee known as the ICC Parish Committee assists the

Chaplains. The teams of the parish committee are nominated/appointed every year/biennial by the Chaplain from the list of volunteers who are ready to organise different programmes for the ICC. Ecclesial Status: 5. The Community as such, is not a full-fledged parish community. However, it has a categorical status, as being defined by the Archdiocese of Vienna and it functions exactly like a parish community with the guidance of the Rector of the Afro-Asian Communities. Its existence and survival depend on the good will of the Archdiocese. From October 2001, a Parish (Pfarre Maria Lourdes) was assigned to the Indian Catholic Community in Vienna. The Chaplain of the ICC resides in the parish of Maria Lourdes and helps partly the Austrian parish of Maria Lourdes. Assistant Chaplain resides in the home for student priests. On the 1st of July 2005, Fr. Thomas Thandappilly CST, the Chaplain of the Indian Catholic Community was given the additional charge of being the parish priest of Maria Lourdes and Fr. Saju Sharat IMS, the assistant of the ICC, was also appointed as assistant of the Maria Lourdes. Mag. Rev. Fr. Saju Sharat IMS was called back by his superiors and transferred to the Diocese of Regensburg in Germany from January 2006. Composition: 6. The Indian Catholic Community is for the immigrant Catholics of Indian origin in the Archdiocese of Vienna. However, it functions mainly for the Malayalam speaking Catholics of Indian origin who reside in and around the city of Vienna. Started from 1982 and now approximately 3500 Indian Catholics, who have migrated from India, reside within the ecclesiastical boundary of the Archdiocese of Vienna. They belong to all the 3 Rites from India, the Kerala Latin, the Syro-Malabar including the Knaanaya and the Syro-Malankara Catholics. No accurate census of these denominations as per the Rite is available and the exact numbers of people belonging to each Rite are also not available. Most of them are employed in the hospitals/Pflegeheimen; some are employed in the UN offices, International organisations, and diplomatic missions.

7. The liturgical services of the Indian Catholic Community are held in Malayalam and in Syro-Malabar Rite, because the majority of the immigrant Malayalee Catholics in Vienna belongs to the Syro Malabar Rite of both the Northists and the Knaanaya-Southists. However, Catholics of other Rites attend the common liturgical services and pastoral programmes, as being one parish community of the Malayalee Catholics, under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Vienna, who has recently acclaimed publicly that the ICC is one of the best flourishing parish communities of this Archdiocese. Areas of Special consideration: 8. As a floating community in a foreign land the ICC has got its inherent limitations. Being up-rooted from the homeland and getting rooted in the new land, qualified for many jobs in the home land and not qualified for many jobs in the new land, searching here for a better prospect, etc., had created indecisions whether to continue living here or again to migrate. Hence many had tried to migrate to U.K., to Switzerland, etc. Now the trend in Vienna is to get permanently settled. This is due to the grown up second generation, who are born and brought up here in this culture. By means of cultural integration, acculturation and acclimatization this Malayalee Community is trying to get rooted here. 9. The first generation of ICC is very anxious about their children, who are growing amidst two cultures inherited by their parents at home and the European culture around, from KG, schools, and other institutions. Hence attempts are made through awareness programmes under the auspices of the Community. That include: Pastoral Care Programmes, Women Care activities, Marriage Encounter Programmes, Marriage Preparation Course twice in year, Life Orientation programmes for the Youth, Catechism classes for Malayalee Children, liturgical orientation services for kids, Special awareness programmes in areas of liturgy, sacraments, ecclesial tradition and teachings meant for the elderly people etc. 10. The Parish day is celebrated with great solemnity with the Cultural Evening followed by a Prayer Day. Indian dances, music and drama, which are taught at the Kairali Niketan and like other institutions - where Malayalam is also taught - are staged during the Cultural Programme. 11. There is a Malayalam Library of the ICC, which has a capacity of about 5000 books in Malayalam. It is remains open after the Sunday Mass. 12. There are also occasions for sports practice and competitions are conducted in sports and certain games. 13. Children are trained in singing the liturgical songs and they have already established their talents to sing in the choir for the Malayalam liturgical celebrations. 14. One-day outings and pilgrimages are also organized by the Community, for catechism children, Committee Members, Women Welfare Group, etc.

Page 12: FAMILY REGISTRATION · 5. The Archdiocese of Vienna appointed Pater Dr. Thomas Thandapilly CST, who had completed his doctorate in Pastoral Theology in the Vienna University, as the

15. The ICC also conducts yearly programmes of Youth festival, ecumenical Carol Singing competition (participating other rite denominations), pilgrimages, etc. 16. The ICC has several prayer groups and family units at different centers attached to Catholic churches in the city of Vienna, under the guidance of the Chaplains. Habitat at Maria Lourdes: 17. Austrian colleagues are kind and considerate to the Community and help and cooperate in the Community activities, especially for the liturgical services. The Indians are appreciated for their efficiency in the respective fields of work and for their behaviour. Though they come under the epithet of ‘ foreigners’, they are not treated as such. Pastoral Visit: 18. H.E. Dr. Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, the Archbishop of Vienna, made a pastoral visit to our Community on 4th December 2004, which helped us to enhance our faith as an immigrant community in a local Austrian parish. He holds constant contact with our Community and gives us necessary ecclesial and financial support. Please see our Website, which give plenty of photos of the Cardinal’s presence within our Community. 19. The filial station of the ICC in Stadtlau: On 12th October 2003, the Indian Catholic Community began Malayalam Mass in the Chapel of Maria Help of Christians, at Erzherzog-Karl Straße 176, Wien 22. Presently there is a Malayalam Mass there on Saturdays and Sundays, and on selected occasions, including that of the Annual Retreat of the ICC. 20. There is daily Mass in Malayalam in Maria Lourdes, which is attended by many Malayalee Catholics of all Rites. About ten Malayalee Catholic Priests do their services in the Archdiocese. They help us generously on various occasions. 21. A round the clock pastoral help is available to the Malayalees in Vienna. Chaplains can be reached over the phone. They are available for pastoral care at any time in needs of urgency or by previous appointments. The kids and the Youth of Malayalee Community are given special attention for their ecclesial, sacramental and liturgical orientation. We have a number of programmes for them in order to prepare them for a good state of Christian life, especially of the marital life and family. There is a crisis management group of the Chaplains and experienced lay people for counseling help and care for those persons and families in crises and conflicts. 22. The most pleasant thing of the Indian Catholic Community is our Christian witness in this metropolitan city of Vienna of its unity, harmony, zeal and Christian spirit as being one parish community with members of different Rites, ethnic groups and regional variety, etc.
