Staying Safe in the Sun

in this issue we meet rebecca Grist. rebecca runs ‘suffolk Kids parties’ her own business which encompasses weekly toddler &

baby music groups known as ‘sing & stretch’ and ‘baby boogie’, and her services as a face painter. rebecca offers a combination of music & face painting to offer a unique party package ideal for little ones.

Rebecca is married to Jonas, they have Florence (10), Dominic (7) and a baby due in July. Rebecca and her family have lived in hadeigh for 9 years.

Why do you like living where you do?I love living in hadleigh, it’s small enough to be friendly yet large enough to be convenient! It’s a pretty market town and with 3 parks, a riverside walk and a disused railway walk (perfect for cycling), there are plenty of activities for children to enjoy.

Favourite shop and why? It’s hard to choose a favourite shop, we have some lovely independent businesses along our high street. I always find a look around our ‘hadleigh Thrift shop’ hard to resist though! I’ve found some excellent finds over the years and it’s a great shop to support as the money goes directly to helping local causes & organisations.

Favourite park and why?East house Meadow in hadleigh, otherwise known as ‘cox’s park’. It’s a beautiful park and very well used. sadly there are plans to build houses on part of it. It would be tragic to take this green space away from local people and future generations.

Parents PlaceParents PlaceFavourite children’s club/class?My daughter really enjoys the Ipswich Youth Drama workshops that take place at Northgate Arts centre. It is a very friendly drama class with a healthy ethos that welcomes children of all backgrounds and abilities. Northgate also offers lots of opportunities for children to play music collectively, such as their orchestra.

Favourite day out and why?My perfect day out would always be a lovely walk in the beautiful suffolk countryside with a flask and a good slice of cake! sunshine ideal but not essential..we’re hardy types!

Favourite child friendly restaurant and why?we recently went to the castle Inn in Bungay and were made very welcome. They also had ‘proper’ home-cooked meals for children at sensible prices.

Proudest eco-friendly moment ?I guess when I use our original set of cloth nappies for the third time in July I’ll feel pretty good!

Best planet saving tip?shop locally for groceries. save on petrol (and money!) and help to support local independent businesses that will look after you with fresher, locally sourced meat & veg.

No parent should be without?A bottle of water and a library card.

Most embarrassing moment? My daughter (then aged 2) announcing to the spikey-haired checkout lady in the co-Op that she looked just like a hedgehog.

Funniest comment?A mother who brings her son to my music classes asked her son whether he thought my pregnant bump would be a boy or a girl. his reply was “By the shape, I think it’s probably a dinosaur”.

Favourite family holiday spot?southwold beach

Best children’s book? The Tiger who came for Tea by Judith Kerr. This was my favourite book as a child, and still had as much appeal to my children when I read it to them.

Best children dvd or video?we have bought dvds of older cartoons, wacky Races, Tom & Jerry, pink panther etc. The children love them!

Most played with toys?Lego, farm animals, dolls house-any toy you can ‘role-play’ with!

Most successful recipe/food?homemade flapjack with lots of ‘omega’ seeds, nuts and fruit stuck in!

Parent to parent interview

How are you targeting schools with these messages?rachel: I visited a local primary school to teach key stage two children about the benefits of safer sun practice. The fun and interactive art-based approach meant the children were able to recall the messaging several weeks after the session.

This year, sun awareness week starts 6th may 2013. Contact rachel alexander on 01473 704717 or [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to invite a friendly team to speak to your club, association or school.www.macmillan.org.uk

1 cover up as much as possible. hats, longer sleeves and sunglasses all help, as do darker materials.

2 Use a minimum of factor 30+sunscreen with UVA/UVB protection for exposed areas of skin.

3 Limit sun exposure between 11am and 3pm.

4 Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside.

5 Reapply sunscreen every two hours or sooner if you have been swimming.

staying safe in the sun is just as important at home as it is abroad. here Macmillan skin cancer Nurse specialist, Rachel Alexander, from Ipswich hospital, explains how families can protect themselves from the sun’s harmful rays.

Why do people expose themselves to sun?rachel: Initially being out in the sun is a comforting feeling but this heat can quickly cause inflammation and redness of the skin which is the body’s warning of skin damage.

Why do we have to protect our skin?rachel: The sun emits Ultra Violet (UV) rays which have the ability to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, causing damage. These rays aren’t felt by the skin which makes it easy to succumb to skin damage unknowingly.

Around 80% of an individual’s lifetime exposure to UV Radiation occurs during childhood and adolescence. protecting children’s skin early will put them in a good position to avoid skin damage in future.

What are the consequences?rachel: skin cancer is one of the few cancers with a known cause: excessive sun exposure. UV exposure is responsible for 90% of skin cancers and reducing UV exposure should lower the risk of developing skin cancers.

The work of the sanctuary is set in 2 acres of beautiful gardens with a pretty woodland walk and naturalistic aviaries. These attractive surroundings also incorporate butterfly and bee friendly borders, the Barclays sensory garden, bug hotels, wildlife ponds, wheelchair friendly bird hide, red squirrel compound and a meerkat enclosure.

The conservation remit of the charity is three pronged: conservation, Rehabilitation and Education. To these ends the charity works with the visiting public, volunteers, schools, local veterinary practice and members of its partnership agency the Thornham Owl Box project.

Through outreach work in pre-schools, primary and secondary schools, by offering support for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme and providing work experience placements and volunteer opportunities, the sanctuary offers access to the fascinating world of birds of prey to the whole spectrum of age and ability groups.

since its inception several years ago, the sanctuary’s saving Britain’s Owls campaign has also gathered momentum and together with the Adopt an Owl scheme has confirmed the suffolk Owl sanctuary’s place as a forerunner in the conservation of British owls and other birds of prey.

The woolverstone wish Fund has been created in order to raise money to refurbish the Chemotherapy outpatient clinics and day-unit in the woolverstone wing of ipswich hospital. The aim is to increase the available space, improve privacy for patients and provide a more comfortable treatment area. They have a goal of £800,000.

Anyone who has visited woolverstone Outpatients at heath Road hospital, Ipswich either to receive chemotherapy or to accompany a patient cannot doubt the dedication of the staff. however, the cramped area leaves a lot to be desired.

well aware of this, and with no funds available for improvements, woolverstone wish Fund is endeavoring to raise enough funds to remodel the Oncology department and update the environment. They are hoping to make the area as comfortable as possible and also address some of the pressing capacity issues.

The target amount of £800,000 is the long term goal, but it is hoped to make small but significant improvements as the fund raising progresses. One very special fundraising event organized is A Flutter of Fairies - A Guinness world Record Attempt which takes place on 23rd June at 11:45am for a midday start on cornhill, outside the Town hall, Ipswich

Guinness World RecordAttemptAll participants must be dressed in traditional fairy attire - costumes must include a tutu, wings and a wand to qualify for the record attempt.

Entry is free but a minimum £1.00 donation would be welcome. so why not grab your fairy wand and wings and be part of a Guinness world Record event here in Ipswich.

Organized by Kerseys solicitors in collaboration withIp-ART, Ipswich Borough council and woolverstone wish.

Baby Talk sponsored by

Infant massageby Ann Lay

To celebrate National Baby Massage Week (13th-18th May) Baby Senses instructor Ann Lay highlights some of the lesser known benefits of baby massage and how to adapt the massage as your infant grows.

Baby massage is widely discussed and each

time it is the same key benefits mentioned.

• Relief from colic/ digestion discomfort

• Relaxation for parent and baby

• Improves sleep

• Increases parent/ baby bond

• Encourages baby’s development

‘This is all well and good’, I hear you cry, ‘but as soon as my baby is

older and much more wriggly, I find it too much hard work to

keep the massage going.’In my Baby Massage

courses and Music and Massage classes I teach

my parents how to adapt the massage as the baby grows. we do this by;

Going with the baby, not fighting

against the baby’s’ natural interest to be

on the move. we find the best time to massage

your baby and do the area most easily available to you.

with newborns this tends to be legs, but as they are on the move

this is less likely and then the back (which was previously

hated due to their disdain for tummy

time) or the arms become much

easier. we allow them to sit up or stand or be on their front.

We make it FuN! your baby will love having songs sung to them whilst doing the strokes, or you allow them to play with a toy to keep those little hands busy.

when it is no longer a ‘baby massage’ and more a toddler or big boy/ girl massage then Imagination Massages are the best way to go. These are very simple and great fun for both the giver and receiver. You tell a story and whilst doing so, you perform strokes or nurturing touch that fits the story. I find it is usually easiest to use the back for these massages but other areas could be used. You could do different types of weather, the pitter patter of rain, zig zags of lightning, the wind blowing, and the rays of sunshine. Or perhaps make a pizza, rolling out the dough, spreading the tomato sauce, sprinkling the cheese and so on. There are no ends to where you could go with this!

As your child gets older, get them to tell the story and you do the actions or get them to give you an imagination massage on your back!!! (watch out for any elephants or giants that might turn up in the story though!)

Most of all HAve FuN!

If you would like to speak to Ann regarding this article or to learn Baby Massage or attend Music and Massage classes call 07748914370 or visitwww.BabySenses.co.uk

Baby senses will be holding a baby massage talk/ taster session at Mothercare, Ipswich on Tuesday 14th May at 2pm. This is free and new mums or dads or expectant mums can just turn up on the day to listen and join in. There will be a special deal available for all who attend the event because of baby massage week.

There are however numerous potential benefits,all equally as positive and nurturing.Here are 5 of the lesser known ones;

Body Awareness through nurturing touch your baby gains a better understanding of their body and where it begins and ends.

reflux and Silent reflux Babies as this condition involves acidic milk being regurgitated up into the oesophagus or into the back of the nose, as well as possetting/vomiting, it obviously does not just affect the stomach. As well as the emotional trauma for baby and parent, reflux can often cause the baby to arch their back causing strain on the chest and neck. Muscle tension will also occur in arms, hands, legs and feet. The affected body areas tummy, chest, head and face may have negative associations for the baby.

Therefore baby massage can be extremely beneficial to both the giver and receiver, as it has the potential to calm and relax both parties and instill new positive associations for your baby.

relief for teething pains The face massage routine as well as massaging over the gum area can ease various discomforts such as headaches, blocked noses and have a soothing effect around the ears and in general. All affected and sensitised by teething. If done at the right time the strokes can have a calming effect on the baby, therefore increasing relaxation hormones (oxytocin) in the body which in itself can be pain relieving.

Learn about your baby we discuss your babies’ cues and ways of communicating such as facial expressions, body language and sounds. You learn the best times to massage your baby and what areas/strokes they like and dislike.

Post Natal depression studies have shown that infant massage reduces post-natal depression. In part this is done by:

• Teaching the parent and baby how to relax, enjoy the moment and improve their interactions and therefore relationship • Encouraging the parent to trust their own judgement • Encouraging new parents to get out and meet other new parents and babies, talk about parental topics or concerns, whilst being in a relaxed and supportive environment and make some new mum and baby friends.

Putting the Me into ‘Family Time’By Angela hope

There is no doubt about it, Mums are busy people. I have yet to meet a Mum who isn’t. I have also never met a Mum who does not complain about their post-pregnancy body but yet exercise is way down their priority list. Exercising after having a baby has many physical and mental health benefits and there are lots of ways to exercise with your new baby in tow, so don’t make it an excuse.

In the immediate days after giving birth, it is important to get as much rest as possible. however, after you have been given the all clear from your Gp at your six week check up then it is safe to begin a regular exercise regime.

walking (from birth onwards). It’s free, it’s safe, you can take baby with you and the fresh air will do you both good. If you need some extra motivation, how about trying a Buggy workout* class and join like-minded mums?

swimming (from 6+ weeks postnatal). Get a swim seat for baby and do 20 lengths pushing them in front of you. A low impact all-rounder, improving your muscle endurance and cardiovascular fitness.

cycling (when baby is 6+ months old). Get out and about with your child on the back. Ditch the car and cycle to the swings, the shops or even to your favourite cafe for a cuppa.

To find out more about getting fit with the family call Angela on 07801 892713 or visit www.hopefitness.co.uk *For more information on your local Buggy Workout classes visitwww.fitnessunitbuggyworkout.co.uk

The importance of‘Me time’Being pregnant or being a new mum can be one of the most tiring times of our lives. During pregnancy your body is working hard growing and developing your little one. Your whole body is constantly working, growing and changing shape. This can take a lot of energy. Once baby is born the hard work continues, 24 hour parenting begins and new mums often find themselves very sleep deprived. This is why relaxation and ‘me time’ are so important during these times, looking after yourself so that you can look after your little one.

By taking time out to allow yourself to relax can help you to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, aid breastfeeding and increase your sense of wellbeing. This can make a huge difference to your ability to deal with day to day problems and stresses, whether these be parenting related or not. New mums will also find the more relaxed they are the more relaxed their baby is, making things like sleep and settling a lot easier. During pregnancy the ability to relax can allow baby to experience all your happy hormones and allow you to enjoy your pregnancy. The ability to relax has also been shown to aid labour and contractions, allowing to you cope better during your labour.

Understanding the benefits of relaxation are one thing, finding the time or situation to do so is another. There are many ways both pregnant and new mums can take time out and enjoy the benefits of relaxation. here are a few ideas that may help.

During pregnancyTry finding a weekly yoga or relaxation class which allows you to spend time each week just for you. Gentle exercise like pregnancy yoga is a great way to relax, allowing you to released happy hormones and lift mood all while relieving any aches and pains you may have. These classes give you a set time each week where you know nothing will interrupt your relaxation time which a lot of women find helpful. If a class is not for you, try a long bath with essential oils or listening to your favourite music. Listening to a certain piece of music or smelling a certain smell during relaxation can help you to anchor that feeling allowing you to return to that calm state whenever you hear that music or smell that smell. This can be especially helpful during labour.

New MumsIt can be really hard to find time alone when you are a new mum so often it is best to use the time with your little one to relax. Babies feed a lot in those first few months, during each feed you cannot get up and get on with things so why not accept this and take this time for you as well. curl up on the sofa with your little one, watch your favourite programme or listen to music. This can be your special time, both for you and your little one.

Another tip is to sleep when they sleep. Not as easily done if you also have other children but the main point is use your time wisely. when baby naps why not curl up on the sofa under a blanket and nap too. Even if you find it difficult to sleep during the day just 15 minutes resting with your eyes closed can work wonders.

The most important thing to remember whether you are pregnant or a new mum is that you owe this to yourself. You are growing a human life and raising them, caring for their every need, you are simply amazing, you are a super mum. so take some time, relax, you deserve it.

By shelley Brinkley

One Families suffolk reader who did take experience some ‘me time’ was Mum to be stephanie. stephanie treated herself and her unborn baby to some quality relaxation time by experiencing a massage at Image Beauty salon who have a specially designed couch for pregnant ladies. stephanie, who at the time was 30 weeks pregnant, said ‘my experience was simply exhilarating. The full body massage was so relaxing, I still feel rejuvenated. Lying face down even with my’ bump’ was the most comforting feeling. It’s amazing having a place for you and your bump to get the most rewarding massage experience. The team were most welcoming and very friendly. Already looking forward to another visit. Thanks to the team at Image’.

Party Feature

A birthday party is the highpoint of the year for most kids - so the pressure is on to get it right. The secret, as ever, is in the planning. But how do you find out which party is right for your child? We guide you through the options.

WHat is it?paintballing, go-karting, swimming,

Go Ape etc

WHo’s it suitable for?Older children (seven plus); kids

with lots of energy who enjoy racing around

tHe pros:Your house remains intact; the kids have something to focus on, and

lots of opportunities to let off steam; many children end up covered in bruises from paintballing (though

they don’t seem to mind!)

tHe cons:It can be very expensive; although

some options, eg a swimming pool party, trip to an adventure playground, can be good value

whatever sort of party you’re having don’t neglect the party bags! Every kid, at every party, is secretly (or not so secretly!) longing for a party bag - and part of the excitement for your child is helping to put the bags together. have a budget and stick to it - party bags can add hugely to the cost of a party - but try and limit the wasteful plastic toys that get thrown away immediately.

it’s party timeit’s party time

top tips to make it Work: 1. If the activity is long and

energetic it might be best to postpone a winter birthday party to the spring (the kids might get wet and cold as they’ll be outside for ages).

2. Take plenty of water, squash, snacks including fruit - they’ll need plenty of energy for all

that running around.

3. Make ABsOLUTELY sure you’ve checked all restrictions,

eg height restrictions, beforehand - there’s nothing worse than finding out on the day that one of your guests is

too small to participate.

4. Make sure you get parental consent forms signed well in

advance - the venue will require you to do this before they allow

you in.

5. Ensure the kids wear any safety equipment at all times.

By Joanna Moorhead

WHat is it?An at-home for the birthday child

and friends, with traditional games like pass the parcel (always a

winner), pin the tail on the donkey, and musical bumps.

WHo’s it suitable for? Great for nursery and reception

age children, but don’t neglect its values for older kids, especially girls of eight or nine who often

enjoy nothing more than inviting their friends back to their house

and having a girly time.

tHe pros:It’s cheap (or at least, it certainly

can be); other parents often stay to help you out, keep you company,

especially if you promise a glass of prosecco to help everyone through

tHe cons:You may need to redecorate

afterwards; you’ll certainly need to do a major tidy up. It can be difficult to keep your birthday child’s siblings out of the way, which could lead to conflict.

top tips to make it Work:

1. Agree ground rules with the birthday child beforehand about which rooms are in and out of

bounds.

2. have a timetable for what’s happening when.

3. Think about a project, eg build a bear kits, jewellery-

making, pirate games.

4. Give them chance to let off steam in the garden.

5. For tea, spread a huge paper tablecloth on the floor and get

them to sit around the edges ofit. At the end, simply fold it

up with all the rubbish insideand bin.

An indoor party in a hired venue

WHo’s it suitable for?children of five plus, who are

confident about being left somewhere they don’t know

tHe pros:A lot more space than they’d have

if you were at home

tHe cons:You’ll have to leave the place

spotless afterwards, and pay for any damage

top tips to make it Work: 1. Try to find somewhere with outdoor space as well in case

it’s a lovely day.

2. Ask if you can borrow use playgroup play equipment.

3. have lots of help, and have tea reasonably early in the afternoon so you can get it tidied away before the end.

4. If you’ve got the budget, consider hiring an entertainer

- the extra space will make it a lot more fun.

5. Musical games, dancing, discos etc are great fun in

church halls.

the ChurCh hall party

WHat is it?A meal-based party in eg a pizza

restaurant, where the kids are allowed to help or watch in the food

preparation

WHo’s it suitable for?Older kids of eight-12; children who enjoy the chance to meet and chat

more than the chance to run around

tHe pros:At its best, it’s very civilised; you

can even have a second table in the restaurant and invite some other

parents along, so it’s a meal out for you as well. children enjoy sense of being ‘grown up’ and eating out with

friends

tHe cons:It’s expensive; raucous behaviour will

upset other diners

top tips to make it Work: 1. Make sure you’re booked for

a time when the restaurant won’t be busy

2. A restaurant near a park, where kids can run off a bit of

energy afterwards, is a good idea

3. Don’t rely on the pizza-making/chef-watching for

absolutely all the entertainment. Bring eg colouring packs or

check the restaurant will provide them, and think of some easy games to play round the table,

eg I-spy, in case things flag

4. Make sure you sort out the cake arrangements beforehand; most restaurants allow you to

bring your own (don’t forget the candles and matches)

5. Don’t limit yourself to chain restaurants - your local eaterie

may well be prepared to accommodate your party, and

may be more flexible than bigger establishments
